Didn't one of the minor characters ....yes...when Willie returned from Wyndcliff, IIRC, Barn/Julia talked Liz into letting Willie do odd jobs, and I vaguely remember gardenening.

Maybe Harry Johnson did some of the yard work when he was around.  BTW, I would not wear flip flops when mowing the lawn, esp. if you are walking behind a push mower.  Too many things can fly out from under a mower.  And make sure and wear some protection for your eyes.  And sunscreen too.

I'm also picturing Elizabeth, wearing that black evening gown from the pilot episode, sitting on a riding lawn mower, toodling along the grounds.  Off to the side is Roger, wearing his smoking jacket and scarf, holding a brandy in one hand, clipping away at the hedges.

Who does Barnabas' (sigh) get to mow his lawn?  Don't say Willie because he does so much as it is.  Cleaning, cooking, polishing the candeliar(sp), and fixing the other rooms. What about Collinwood?  David won't do it, and you know darn well Roger won't.  Do they have just a person to do this and that's all?

I think...that since it's a 10 minute walk through the woods (could be more, could be less) from Collinwood to the Old House, that actually, the OH doesn't have a lawn per se. It's surrounded by grassy field, thicket, old rose bushes, rampant lilac bushes, woods, brambles, and so on. There's no groomed lawn as there is at Collinsport. And yeah, Willie has enough to do inside, he'd have no time to do anything outside.

I have an old house myself, and spend so much time working on fixing it up and maintenance that I have neglected the lawn severely these past years, so I think I can commiserate fairly well with Willie. Barn may want the grass or thickets cut back, but he has got to know that Willie is only one man.

The greengrowth is WILD around the Old House, and a trial to all who traverse the woods to get there.

Liz in a black evening gown on a riding mower as mentioned by Gerard brings to mind Faye Dunaway way over the top as Joan Crawford attacking the shrubery in full evening gown regalia.  Hmmm.  Maybe Dark Shadows missed a story opportunity - Liz possessed and outside doing yard work dressed to the nines.  Carolyn!  Bring me the ax!

Oh, I don't think flip flops are appropriate footwear for the estate at all.  This from someone who spent 2 hours traipsing through soggy brush in them just trying to find what's left of Spratt House.  And all I have to show for it are scratches and a head cold.  Stupid California girl.

I must confess that I'm a flip-flop wearer when I mow the lawn.  I always hate having chalk feet when the rest of me goes tan (although I do like the flip-flop white bands across the skin, so go figure).  I still have one of those ancient, I-don't-think-they-even-make-them-anymore manual mowers; I've never used a power one.  It takes me about an hour-and-a-half to mow with it, but I figure it's great exercise.
