Does anyone know how they got him to stay on for ??longer?? to do this re-do of Lt. Nathan Forbes?

Yes, but I think you meant to ask if Joe Haskell is gone.  Tom and Chris Jennings were played by Don Briscoe, and Joel Crothers played Nathan Forbes and Joe Haskell.

At this point Joel Crothers has already left the show.  The final episode he taped was #658.  The appearance of Nathan Forbes in the current montage for #662 & #663 is actually flashbacks taken from 1796 eps.
