Edward believes Barnabas's story because: (1) the vampire is still staked in his coffin; and (2) the man lying on the ground--in daylight--is a Collins. He insists on bringing Barnabas back to Collinwood.

Pansity has brought Amanda's portrait back to Collinwood. Pleased with herself and her successful errand, she sings her song as she sets the painting on a fancy easel. Out in the foyer, Trask thunders that singing is forbidden. Pansity needles him into a rage. Trask opens the doors to the drawing room--and is stunned to see the painting there. Pansity needles him about Amanda until he's even angrier. C/P sashays out the door and up the stairs, singing her song and showing her legs up to the knees. That picture was brought here to discredit me! Trask screams after her. I swear I will find out who brought it here and make them pay! Up on the landing, C/P wags her behind at him and continues into the corridor, still singing. Absolutely furious, Trask returns to the drawing room and stares at Amanda’s portrait. But if Trask is angry about the portrait, he is completely stunned when Selbtofi returns with Edward, who is supporting Barnabas into the house.

Edward insists that THIS Barnabas was victimized by the vampire--who is still lying in his coffin. Trask insists that Edward has been hoodwinked somehow and tries to throw Barnabas out, but Edward insists that if Barn leaves, it will be on Judith's orders. Edward is scandalized at seeing Amanda's portrait. Trask insists there was nothing between them, but Edward says that even the servants knew there was, and when they know something, it's true! He more or less orders Trask to get the portrait out of the drawing room before Judith sees it.

For the first time, Barnabas Collins is a guest at Collinwood! He is lying in bed in the guest room upstairs. Selbtofi tries to get him to quit "playacting." With a sigh, Barn insists that everything he said at the doctor's office is true. This is your friend Quentin speaking, Selbtofi lies. You can be honest with me. He says he knows that Angelique and Julia have been working to bring him (B.) back, but Barn claims not to know them and reminds Selbtofi that he also saw the coffin. Well, perhaps I was wrong, Selbtofi admits, but his face is full of menace. He suggests, You had better get some rest--Barnabas. He walks out. Barnabas seems exhausted.

Edward tells Trask that he's going upstairs to see Barnabas--and that Trask must get the painting out of the house in half an hour. Trask piously announces that he'll pray that no one comes to harm from the man in the guest room. Edward pointedly reminds him that he and "Quentin" brought Barnabas into the house in broad daylight. This shuts Trask up just as Selbtofi arrives. He is tickled pink on seeing Amanda's portrait--although of course the real Quentin would have a far different reaction to the portrait of his lost love. Trask accuses Selbtofi of bringing the portrait into the house, and Selbtofi is only too glad to take the credit. Trask wants to go see Charles about the painting, although Selbtofi advises against it.

Selbtofi goes to the cave and pours something flammable over the coffin just as Edward arrives. Edward doesn't want him to burn the coffin, but Selbtofi insists, adding, You must admit, Edward, as long as the body is here, the family is in danger. I am also curious to know how the destruction of the coffin will affect the Barnabas Collins who is so inexplicably among us. Yes, extremely interested! He laughs madly as he sets the torch to the coffin, which promptly goes up in very fake-looking flames. The vampire is destroyed forever! he shouts triumphantly as Edward herds him toward the cave entrance.

Barnabas is asleep when someone--a man, but we can’t see who--quietly enters the room. Then we see it’s Trask. Barnabas awakens and looks up, and Trask tells him, I didn’t knock because I thought you’d be asleep. Who are you? Barnabas asks. I am the Reverend Gregory Trask, he announces solemnly. How do you do? Barnabas replies politely. I was concerned about you, Trask says. You seemed so weak when they brought you in. I’m not feeling any better, Barnabas replies. I am sorry to hear that, Trask lies. Perhaps you could use something to help sustain you through this great trial, something--like this! So saying, he whips out--a small white cross and holds it in front of Barnabas. Barnabas looks at it with no reaction. After a moment, Barnabas asks mildly, Is something wrong, Reverend? Attempting to cover up his surprise and annoyance, Trask replies, No--I merely brought the cross to help me pray for your swift recovery. Barnabas seems a tiny bit pleased as he replies politely, Thank you. That is very kind of you.

Down in the drawing room, Edward tells Pansity that a man who looks like Barnabas Collins is now in the house. Quentin and I went to the place where you killed him, Edward explains. His body is still there. But Pansityis upset anyway. I don’t like it at all! she exclaims. Don’t let this stranger’s presence upset you in any way, Edward tells her. You’re in no danger. I think I understand, Pansity says tentatively. I’m going to see the patient, Edward tells her and goes upstairs to visit his guest. Momentarily electrified when Selbtofi enters the room, Pansity gives a little scream. Selbtofi shuts the doors. Terrified, she insists, I don’t want to be alone with you! I’ll scream if you don’t open the doors! You don't have to be frightened of me anymore, Selbtofi insists. That’s what you say! she retorts. It just so happens that I am as frightened as you are, Selbtofi tells her. I wonder if Edward is wrong about that man upstairs. I’m not staying around to find out, Pansity says. I’m leaving the house! That won’t solve anything, Selbtofi insists. You’re the only one who can help me. You are the one who destroyed the vampire, and if anyone can tell us that if the man upstairs is the real Barnabas Collins, it’s you. If you think I’m going to that creature upstairs, you’re crazy! she scoffs. Selbtofi replies, Pansy, you owe it to Judith, who is letting you stay in the house because she likes you. I won’t let anything happen to you, I promise. Resigned, she asks, What do you want me to do? All you have to do is just look at the man, Selbtofi tells her. Don’t worry--I will be standing right beside you. Look at that man and tell me if he’s the same Barnabas who was at Collinwood before. He makes it sound simple, but Pansity isn’t fooled. If anything, she’s even more frightened now.

Selbtofi enters the guest room and tells Barnabas, I’m here to settle this matter once and for all. I don’t understand, Barnabas says. You will, PQuentin assures him. He calls Pansity into the room. At first she refuses to look at Barnabas. Look at the man in the bed, PQuentin tells her. Is he the real Barnabas Collins? As Barnabas looks at her calmly, Pansity slowly raises her terrified eyes.......

Did the writers think of this stunt as something only Barnabas in particular would do, I wonder, was it supposed to be in-character, or did they just unthinkingly pull it out of their hat, as we tend to assume with the writers?  Ed seems very sure about his vampirism facts, the daylight thing supposedly being absolute.   Seeing two Barnabi does trump everything else, though.
What if they had touched the Barnabas in the coffin?  Was it/he solid?
I love gloaty Pansy these days.  Nancy's good at it and enjoys it.  She sets up Amanda's portrait for dramatic effect in the drawing room, then sang her song for it... Her with Gregory... as she exits, nice little shot on the shoulder she gives him...!

Mere moments later, Greg's eyes really pop out over his second big surprise of the day:  Qtofi and Edward helping Barnabas in the front door!  Barnabas gives Gregory a glare that seems meant for all Trasks of all times...  Greg rants, and I like Barnabas's response: "Who is he?!"  As Selbtofi exits, I thought, Selby really should have thrown in Thayer's deep, menacing chuckle occasionally (as in... Heh heh heh heh!!  It is MINE!!!), though it may have been impossible for his young throat.

Ed thinks that when the servants say something, you can be sure it's true!  ***  A classic sort of DS moment, when we're left to wonder how the burning of coffin Barnabas will affect... the other Barnabas.  Cut to his face in bed, as his twin burns.   We do a supernatural mental somersault or two trying to figure it out...  Gregory helpfully delivers a cross to bedridden Barn.  "Is something wrong Reverend?"  Nice, a bit too gloaty for an innocent Barnabas, though.

Selbtofi outs himself to Barnabas, by trying to out Barnabas through Charity Faye.  End.

I've always loved the two-Barnabi stunt. I've never heard of another show that even attempted such a thing.
