This American Life

I don't remember anyone mentioning this. . . forgive if it's a repeat the 1997 DS Convention was part of This American Life a PBS radio show.  If you  want to hear it, go to http://www.thislife.org/. . search for "conventions' or episode # 74..  It's Act 1 only.  "what happens when 2000 people come together when they have nothing in common but watching television?"[/b]  and another piece from 1996 of a group of people who sit around watching DS. .is this any of us? That one is episode #39

Julia99,

Thanks for posting the link to archived "This American Life."  I listened to the audio and it does represent what I watch now now on the Sci-Fi channel.  The mistakes, plot lines and bloopers that were committed during the live tapings.

A friend at the office lent me a tape of that installment of "This American Life" a while back. It was kind of interesting to listen to, although the narrators of that series tend to make me want to throttle them. The descriptions of the fest itself were pretty much on the money, though. It was interesting to get a layperson's view of the fest.

I just listened to it, and I HAVE to have a copy now.  Yah wanna know why?

THEY MENTIONED ME!  THEY MENTIONED ME!

I'M _THE_ CRACKPOT!  AND NOW I'M FAMOUS!
(or INfamous, well, at least I was for that week)

DARK SHADOWS RULES! WHA-WHOOH!

Err, umm, uh-- excuse me for that utterly juvenile outburst.
I've been apologizing for almost 7 years.

Though, of course, the narrator didn't mention that
Abe Vigoda kind of saved me from total ridicule:
"That girl REALLY belongs to Dark Shadows!"

LorraineAAB Get out!

You should contact them at This American Life. Seriously. Who knows? It might turn into something.

I love the show. I've been listening for years now and it's become part of my radio diet (was thrilled to catch the repeat of the annual Poultry Slam this afternoon on my way home from the wilds of Southern Ontario). They've done some really really amazing stuff on all kinds of things. Some of the essays have led me to some great books too.

Can't answer the stuff about the Fest, but I know I've watched DS with my friends and we've had conversations like the ones they mentioned on the other TAL ep.

If this had happened LAST August, rather than  August 1997, it would have been worthwhile.  I've been slammed in the past for that breathless, reckless burst of enthusiasm (caused as much, I admit, by my joy at having my first child & parent-free vacation in over 15 years, as by being with a crowd of DS fans for the first time ever.)

However, the more I considered it, the more the idea appealed, if only to reassure them that, in the intervening years, I HAVE a life, have proven NOT to be dangerous, and those actors are no longer "scared" of me.

However, this is their e-mail policy:
"For comments on the site or on the shows - along with tips on broken links or other suggestions. Please do not submit stories, press releases, show ideas.... to this address."

For that sort of update, they suggest snail-mail.  Expending such effort over a trivial incident years ago would probably PROVE their point, which is the opposite of my intent.  So, I will let it go.  (BTW, I can't even order the tape or disc of the program,
as I refuse to reset my browser to accept their cookies.  Oh well.)
