Sheriff Patterson, talkative as usual, said that when the police dogs were set to track Maggie's scent, they were scared.  Apparently, then, the police dogs are not the dogs that howl in response to Barnabas’s agitation.  Maybe the howling dogs are supernatural manifestations conjured up by Barnabas’s agitation.  This may be stretching things a bit far, but perhaps howling dogs are ghosts of dogs.  The reason I'm suggesting this is that, months later,
Julia suggests that Sarah's ghost is an expression of his unquiet conscience, or something.  Maybe Barnabas’s agitation stirs up the ghosts of dogs, and his conscience stirs up the ghost of Sarah.
What other ghosts might Barnabas’s emotions conjure up?

Vicky had previously said, I believe, that she thought Willie might have made the phone call that sent them to Widows Hill during Maggie's first disappearance.  But she didn't volunteer that today.  Maybe it was just clumsy writing, but I like the idea that Vicky wasn't willing to take the initiative on accusing Willie.

When Patterson asked Willie if there was a witness to his having been in Bangor the previous night, Willie cited Barnabas, and didn't mention what hotel he stayed at.  Interesting.

So Willie has a police record himself. But he answers all of the sheriff's questions with, "Sir." But this doesn't cut any ice with the sheriff, who promises Willie that he's watching him like a hawk. Meanwhile, the marks of Barnabas's latest beating have nearly healed. While the sheriff is questioning him, Willie makes himself busy by replacing the burned-out candles.

We get our first view of Dr. Woodard's office when Burke and Vicki visit him. Dr. Woodard is most interested in the bite marks on Maggie's neck. He's awaiting the report from the lab and has contacted "some associates" to see if they've seen anything similar.

A sad, sad scene with Willie and Jason. Hammer in hand, Willie is about to do some kind of repair to the underside of a little table when Jason comes in. Willie does his best to protect his former friend by keeping him from coming in, but Jason pushes past him and orders him to leave town before the sheriff pins Maggie's disappearance on him. Willie tries again, warning Jason that it will be dark soon and that he should leave the Old House. They go back and forth for a while until Willie threatens Jason with the hammer. But Jason easily knocks it away and beats Willie till he's down on the floor.

After Jason leaves, Willie picks himself up and almost absently wipes the blood off his face. Despite three savage beatings in less than a week and the sheriff’s threats besides, he looks far from angry--rather, his face is suffused with what seems to be terrible sorrow.

I like the idea of ghost dogs.  It would explain why they seem so,close when there are no dogs. Willies face has healed fast perhaps due to Barnabas' bite having some miraculous healing power. Then Jason beats Willie when he sees him.  I guess this is Karma coming back to bite you.
you know there's a whole wing that's closed off all the time; the west wing, I go there lots of times

These episodes here make me feel so sorry for Willie. Wish we could see things from his point of view more often.
