Barnabas and 1796

We all assumed that Barnabas had successfully saved Vicki and Peter from the gallows in 1796 when he willed himself back there (with the help of Peter's ghost). Unfortunately the happy ending we assumed Vicki and Peter had was ruined when DC threw in that stupid twist of
Vicki being killed by Jeb Hawkes during the Leviathan story.
Something just occured to me....Barnabas ended up going back to 1796 a second time after 1897 when
he followed Kitty into Josette's portrait. The Leviathans snatched him in 1796.
Now this was the time that, when Vicki went back to the past after the seance of 1967, at this point of 1796 she was jailed as a witch. Did Barnabas' second trip back to 1796 unintentionally winded up screwing up Vicki and Peter's happy ending?

Also Millicent's convenient knowledge that Barnabas had 'died' contradicts how in the original 1795 storyline, she had been led to believe Barnabas had gone to England. Also she was too preoccupied with Nathan Forbes and his betrayal on the night of Josette's trip to Widows' Hill.

Yes, yes, the writers really screwed up big-time when they decided to go back again and again to the same storyline. I mean, how many times can someone visit 1796 and not wind up with the future looking awfully wierd and grotesque? I mean, I can understand about this thing with Vicki - the writers obviously thought that
we needed a reason for David and Amy not to go to Boston as planned
But come on! We really don't need a third trip down memory lane. [protest]
There has to be more . . . More . . . MORE!!!
