I wonder if the show would have been different. Did  the chemestry between Julia and Barnabas help save the show?? I think so!

Julian, portrayed by Off Broadway veteran Addison Powell, would have survived about six weeks before being strangled to death by an irate Barnabas, to the resounding cheers of fans all across America.

THAT's what would have happened.

*wink*

Was AP (as opposed to UPI) supposed to be Julian?!     Well, looks like they were determined to get him in there as Barnabas's doctor one way or another, if so... and presumably they managed to get that out of their systems, just as soon as it became clear that Addison was stinking up the joint.

Different with Powell as Julian?  Depends... exactly how gay would he have been?    Julian following Barnabas through time?

Oh, no, not Addison Powell.  This would have been a perfect opportunity to bring in Roger Davis a few months early.  After Barnabas killed him the first time, he would keep popping up again, and again, and again.  "Hey, Barnabas!  Are you sure you don't want that cure?  If you'll come take a look at a great time-sharing opportunity I'm marketing, I'll give you a 10% discount on the cure, and I'll even throw in a few locks of my gorgeous hair at no extra charge!  Now is that a deal you can't refuse, or what?"

Julian would have fallen in love with Barnabas as daytime's first openly gay character.
After seeing that he couldn't compete with Josette/Maggie/Vicki,
Julian moves in with Prof. Stokes!

My squib about Addison "addlepate" Powell portraying "Julian" was meant to be a joke.  I apologize for any confusion it may have caused.

I am afraid I inherited a bone-dry sense of humor from my mother...

AIUI, had Julia been Julian, he would have been been killed by Barnabas as some point and then Barn himself would have been staked.  I have no idea though if the original plans for the Julian character were along the lines of trying to cure Barnabas or of a more Van Helsing nature.

Julia's impending death at the hands of Barnabas was implied (if you listen closely enough) in a couple of the opening voiceovers in the August and Sept. episodes in 1967.  I think they had dropped this particular bit of foreshadowing by Oct. 1967.  In that month, Grayson appeared in 17 episodes of the show, and by the end of that month, Sam had joined the writing crew.

Then Dr. Lang's famous instructions would have been changed to, "Julian, Julian, when you do the experiment..."  ;D
Barnabas to little Sarah's ghost: "I forbid you to leave! I beg you to stay!"

I read in The Introduction of Barnabas episode guide that the first episode Dr. Hoffman was to appear, the outline describes Dr. Hoffman as a man in his 60's.
They may have used the attempt to cure Barnabas story but then Julian Hoffman would probably have been killed by Barnabas when it backfired & then Burke & Dr. Woodard would have staked Barnabas.

Julian would've most likely been killed off along with Barnabas, just like the original plan. It's doubtful that whoever planed Julian, no matter the man, would've had as strinkingly good chemestry as Grayson did with Jon. Besides, the writers would've never initiated the taboo subplot of a gay man pining for a vampire. ;)

DS would haven't been the wonderful show it became.  I CANNOT even began to imagine DS without Julia/Grayson.  She is my favorite actress and character from DS.  I love Grayson...and wish she would have stayed with us longer.  She was my inspiration to quit smoking.....Thanks Grayson...Miss u!
If you like DS and want to have a fun  on a Facebook page that is open to all forms of DS and doesn't allow childish behavior like some groups; come on over to DIAESD! You do have to ask to be invited and I will approve you.

Confusion is under-rated.   Sounds like you had a cool mother.

Hey Taeylor, great to have another Grayson-lover among us! She's my fave as well.  Hell, I've been known to say, and without much hyperbole, that Grayson Hall is my RELIGION!

If you get the chance, be sure to check out R J Jamison's book about Grayson's life.  See www.graysonhall.net for more info (and some GORGEOUS photos)!

I definitely recommend Grayson's early Sixties B-movie, Satan in High Heels. It was meant to be a "European art-film filmed in New York" and Grayson definitely gives it that Euro edge of sophistication... even though when it was filmed, she had never set foot outside the US!
