Anita Bolster in The Picture of Dorian Gray
« on: October 21, 2025, 01:50:50 AM »
The Picture of Dorian Gray seems to be airing often this month.  I watched it today and remembered that Anita Bolster-- Bathia Mapes, chosen by MB for today's MUST QUOTES slideshow-- appears as Lady Narborough (see attachment), who is described by Lord Henry as having "the remains of a really remarkable ugliness", yikes.

1945's TPofDG airs on TCM this Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11:15 am ET, 2:15 pm PT

Besides the plot of Quentin's portrait, I wonder if Lord Henry's negative influence on Dorian was an inspiration for Nicholas Blair's corruption of Adam.

She had quite a lengthy career, going back to silent films. Some of her more memorable credits include Saboteur (an early Hitchcock American film) and Scarlet Street, starring Joan Bennett.

Interesting possibility...

She sort of reminds me of Margaret Hamilton ("The Wizard of Oz"). Saw her recently when I re-watched "The Woman in White" on DVD (1940s Wilkie Collins mystery), still good. She did have a long career in film (plus her stint on DS) with small roles.
