Setup:

The Pen enjoyed showing its versatility by playing two roles: Burke Devlin's Pen and James Blair's Pen.  It hoped for a South American subplot in which it would play the other four silver filigree pens as well, but Dan Curtis said...

... the Pens couldn't get things right on their first take, so it would mean lots of editing.

...it was terribly hard to get a pen a working visa in all the South American countries  and DC only believed in presenting realistic, on location footage while doing South American subplots. (Which explains why there never really were any - only vaguely hinted at possibilities.  [wink2]  Although, just think of the amazing possibilities had THE PEN surfaced in it's own subplot after Burke's South American plane crash!!)
