« on: March 31, 2002, 12:03:20 AM »
Turner South will be airing both "Dark Shadows" movies on April 12th! At 10:30 AM, "House of Dark Shadows" will air. At 12:30 PM, "Night of Dark Shadows" will air. The movies may start 15 minutes before or after the given time.

NODS fans may want to tape it on this airdate. The version broadcast on TCM a couple of years ago had the correct sound effects mix. The current videotape and Laserdisc releases have sections where the sound effects track is almost inaudible.

You'll know it's the correct audio mix if during the 'Quentin at piano scene' (about 6 mins in) a floor mike is visible on the left side of the frame. (This transmission copy has the frame line set too low, so it's a mixed bag.)

There's more info on the sound mixes on the website FAQ page.

I'll be sure to look out for that! I was really happy to see that Turner South was airing it since I've never seen it. Only thing I don't like is that it's starting during the second episode of "Dark Shadows" that day, but I guess I'll just have to deal with a lower quality version of those two episodes. Hopefully Sci Fi will continue to air it back to this point in 2003 or 2004.

Thanks Sean!! I don't have the HODS movie, so I'll be sure to tape it!!  :) Also thanks to Darren for the info on NODS. I do have this tape, but would like to hear all the sound effects as they were, so I'll tape that one too. BY the way, does anyone know what channel the Turner South station is on? Thanks!! ;)

A cautionary note: when TCM shows the DS movies, they're unedited by the station (at least they were a few years back, when I recorded them). But the last time I saw them on Turner South, a year or so ago, the editors had butchered them to the point of being unwatchable.

S * P * O * I * L * E * R

After TS's hack job, the climactic death scene of Barnabas proceeds as follows:

From balcony, Jeff shoots his crossbow. Arrow streaks through the air. Scene cuts.

Wow, Willie's on the ground. How'd he get there?

Scene cuts to Barnabas calling Jeff down with his hypnotic voice. Jeff comes down; Barnabas says the line about weddings and witnesses.

Willie's eyes open.

Barnabas bends over Maggie and exposes his fangs.

Barnabas hollers, and we see Willie punch him in the back. Was that an arrow that we caught a glimpse of for about a half second?

Scene cuts to dead Barnabas. Willie's on the ground again (hey, how'd he get there?).

That's it.

Turner South doesn't get me for a viewer when they show DS movies.

You described the cut ending perfectly. That's exactly how it plays out on cut TV prints. Other than the even worse 70+ mins version shown on network TV back in the 70's, this has been the version predominantly shown on regional TV and occasionally TNT. My guess is it's probably what they'll be showing on Turner south. (Can't really blame them, though- the gore soaked Sam Peckinpah-esque ending of HODS is one of the most surprising GP films I've ever seen.)

Never seen a version of NODS cut down even further than 93.5 mins. I know there was one of those 70+ mins ones for network (ala HODS) but have never come across it. What was cut from it when it was last broadcast RAINEYPARK?

Again, we won't know which NODS transmission tape they're using until the actual broadcast. Myself, I don't get Turner South, but it'll be interesting to see which one they show.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Darren -- Wrong Rainey. Raineypark's the other one with the good name. ;)

Don't recall specific edits from NoDS; in fact, I don't think I've watched the whole thing on TS for fear it might have been similarly hacked and slashed. HoDS did have several other scenes missing, some that I expect were to make room for more commercials rather than due to content.

Sorry Mark- ::)

Allen- in answer to your DVD query check out the 'EXISTENCE OF HODS LONGER VERSION' thread on one of the other board pages. There's also info on the FAQ page at the website http://www.nightofdarkshadows.com

No, Allen, there are no plans at the moment to release them on DVD. However, there is a movement to restore both movies to their original, unbutchered glory, but from what I gather this will not probably be released. There is a web site out there but I do not know the URL. Someone has the compelte NODS footage...I am hoping that he puts it on DVD-R and VCD to distribute privatey among fans if the restoration efforts fal, letting the fans trade VCD (no quality loss and easy to copy) or on vhs (quality loss, but not too considerable unless it is more than 4 generations of copying).

For the time being, Allen, you could just find someone who has the laserdiscs and get them to put that on DVD-R. I am not sure how many DS fans have the ability to do this though. But the quality would be higher than vhs. Keep in mind also that a lot of laserdiscs suffer from laserrot, which can severely deteriorate teh quality, so...be cautious.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have the laser discs but would like to upgrade. Also the DVD issues tend to have extras, (a restored uncoat copy of NODS would be great).

We'll just keep our fingers crossed that this happens oneday.
