Using Footage of Joan Bennett's Movies on DS
« on: September 28, 2004, 04:35:12 PM »
On an episode of Falcon Crest, where Angela learns that richard Channing is her son, whom she thought died at childbirth, we are shown a flashback sequence to Angela being informed by the doctor that she lost the baby.

The producers cleverly use footage from an old film of Jane Wyman's for the flashback.

I was wondering if any footage of Joan Bennett's old movies could have been used, for say, the 1949 flashbacks?

Funny you should bring this up... I just watched The Secret Beyond the Door, which was filmed in the late 1940s and directed by Fritz Lang, and of course starred JB.  If the rights thing had been able to be worked out, and, of course, had the ABC technicians had better editing equipment available to them (you would not believe the editing set-up they had in 1967), it would have worked perfectly to have had a couple of snippets from Secret Beyond the Door as part of the 1949 flashbacks.

It's tempting to think of Secret as a lost episode of DS.  It has larger-than-life performances by a great ensemble cast (I particularly enjoyed the performances by Natalie Schafer and Anne Revere).  Michael Redgrave could be Barnabas with a slightly more raw, psychotic edge.  And Joan's voiceovers throughout really do give you that "Collinwood" feeling.

Sadly not available on DVD, but the VHS I got from the library looked gorgeous.

they have been running "father of the bride" alot on cable lately.it stars spencer tracy, elizabeth taylor and of course joan bennett.i think it was made in the early 1950's so even though joan is much younger than she was on d.s. as soon as she opens her mouth all i hear is "liz".i've never heard of "the secret beyond the door" but it sounds cool.i'll look for it.it would have been awsome if they had used some of joan's old movie clips in the 1949 flashback.i was slightly disappointed by it because they didn't do much to make liz look "40's".she sort of looked like she always did.i would have liked to see a snood and some major shoulder pads. :P

I doubt anything from Father of the Bride or Father's Little Dividend would be usable. Those were light comedies and she's very much the suburban housewife with no problems in those.

Secret Beyond the Door is probably closest to the mark. She plays an upper class heiress in that one. She played trampy women in her most famous films (Scarlet Street, Woman in the Window), so those are out. There are a bunch of others that might be possibles--haven't seen any of these: House Across the Bay, Macomber Affair (although I think that takes place on a safari)...

Wouldn't it have been cute if they did use clips of Father of the Bride edited in for the 1949 flashback?  But then, they would had to have changed Paul Stoddard's first name to Stanley.
