WINDS OF WAR to be released on DVD
« on: April 09, 2003, 08:38:58 AM »
It was announced on the webchat and on the WAR AND REMEMBRANCE set, but thought it would be worth sharing for those that missed the info.

Paramount Home Video will be releasing the entire miniseries on DVD as a set later this year, probably in the third or fourth quarter.

Making of featurettes are planned as with MPI's WAR set.

**On a personal aside, I must say that I thought the bonus featurettes on WAR set 2 were very well done and the CD sounds terrific.

This is great news.  I had been waiting for the whole series to be released on DVD.  Can you please keep us posted as to when exactly it will be avalable?
Thanks,

Deb

I found it interesting to note how Dan Curtis made changes, for the better, between The Winds of War (TWOW) and his more mammoth sequel miniseries, War and Remembrance (WAR).  Most notable was the replacement of Jan-Michael Vincent and Ali McGraw.  She, especially, was dreadful, in TWOW, reminding me of a snottier Icky Vicky.

However, I enjoyed both John Houseman and Sir John Gielgud playing the same character in the different mini-series'.  The each brought their own style to the part.

Of course, the most notable thing about WAR was its first-ever complete portrayal of the horrific slaughter that took place in the gas chambers.  The viewer was spared nothing, and the censors allowed it.  It was shockingly powerful and unforgettable.

I recall that there was a WAR backlash, because of its sheer length and meticulous detail (which I loved).  It became the butt of jokes, from The Tonight Show to The Golden Girls and everywhere else in-between.  When it was nominated for the Emmy as the best miniseries, many thought it did not stand a chance.  When that envelope was opened and those fateful words:  "And the Emmy goes to..." ended with WAR, there was a stunned, momentary silence, and then wild applause.  I actually started to tear up.  Dan Curtis had been vindicated for his monumental work.

I'll definitely look forward to the release. I saw both miniseries when they came out; details are a bit hazy but I remember my overall reaction being rather awed. Great, great work, although I was glad of the departure of Ali McGraw. I've never cared for her in anything.

That poor thing has only one method of acting:  repeating her performance from Love Story over and over and over and over (and over) again.  And she was pretty rotten even doing that.  I'm probably one of the few ones who cried at the end of that movie.......with tears of joy.  If I were Ryan O'Neil, I would've "accidentally" bumped the plug with my foot.
