Willie really shines in this episode. Barnabas orders him to leave, but not only does he not leave, he puts himself between Maggie and Barnabas to shield her. Terrified but defiant, he yells at Barnabas, You'll have to kill me first before the girl! He does this not once but twice.

Willie's street smarts come through when he tells Maggie that while she's alive there's always a chance that somehow something may happen to break Barnabas's power.

Welcome, basement cell!  [ghost_grin]

Apparently Barnabas didn't know before now that Vicki is an orphan. Fortunately for all, though, she doesn't tell him any foundling-home stories.

Later, Willie's defiance must be contagious because Maggie dares Barn to kill her too. But "only your beauty saves you," he tells her.

I imagined just then the cell draped with serpentina and party favors, with a big tacky "Welcome" banner on one wall, as Maggie steps in...

Jonathan Frid sure knows how to make his mouth cruel - which seems right, since the mouth is the residence of the fangs.

Barnabas tells Maggie that he won't kill her until she decides she wants to be his bride.  What an interesting statement - and would he carry through on it?  We know he's turning his attention to Vicky, but whatever happens, Maggie is always the Josette lookalike.  Compared to Maggie, Vicky will always be something of a compromise, surely.

Willie really shines in this episode.
Yes, what extraordinary will he displays, when he defies his vampire master!  I wonder...did some of Barnabas's obsession with Maggie rub off onto Willie via vampire influence?

I don't think so. Remember how Willie insulted Maggie and Sam at the BW just before his disastrous trip to the Collins mausoleum. I think that ever since he learned compassion at Barnabas's cruel hands, he's been eaten by remorse. So he'd take any chance at all of making it up to her--and really, it's the one source of human interaction he has now.

What an interesting thought, DarkLady!  I don't agree with you on it, but it's still an interesting thought.

Gosh, thanks! But I stand by my hypothesis because it's consistent with Willie's actions and allows him the grace of free will, even in these horrible circumstances. Anyhow, it serves Barnabas right that Willie isn't completely under his thumb.

It seems it is in Maggie's bet interest that she just come to the point of becoming Josette but never Quite get there. It seems that for some reason the spell that she was under before she came to the old house was more powerful. She was totally under Barnabas' control and now it's faded.
Maggie's jewels sparkle in the candlelight of the basement. Apparently some of lat weeks episodes were pre-empted and a recap was read over the scene. Maggie must endure great pain and be bloodless before her demise and she must beg for death. Quite a hopeless existence although Willie tries to encourage her.
