Finally Karlen is playing Karlen's Willie rather than Hall's Willie, and what a pleasure it is to watch!

Next time I watch this episode I hope I'll remember to see if there's a long close-up of Jason just before Elizabeth's brooch is discovered to have fallen off.  Because if there isn't, I'll be forced to assume that some assistant took it off of Joan Bennett while she was talking, and I'd hate to think of people pawing Joan Bennett just out of camera range.

This is what I wish we could have seen in parallel time: Elizabeth is not Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, but Elizabeth Collins McGuire, whose husband ran away with all her money when Carolyn was a baby and shows up again in 1970 to interact with all the PT folks.

Is the reason that Willie hears the heartbeat that he's the first one to touch the portrait in over a century?  This could be a problem for my theory that the reason we didn't see the portrait for months was that it was out being cleaned.

Lydia, I understand what you mean about JK making the part his own. Very nice soliloquy about the jewels. And the heartbeat! I for one would never have suspected that deep within Willie's thuggish mind lurks a love of beauty. Too bad he doesn't respect women the same way.

When Elizabeth is looking for her brooch, which has an emerald the size of a dinner plate, she tells David that it's an heirloom, and that her great-grandmother gave it to her when she turned eighteen. However, this will change.
Elizabeth’s great-grandmother was Edith Collins, who died in 1897--or perhaps 1840?
The scene in the library with David and Willie is one of my favorites, perfectly played by both DH and JK. What I wish we could have seen in parallel time is the story of the pirate who supposedly gave the jewels to Naomi!

Remember, everyone has 4 great-grandmothers.  Its could have been one of the other three.

Love how Willie is SO surprised that no one feels sorry for him after Burke beat him up...not Elizabeth, not even Jason. We all know Willie asked for it, but of course Willie doesn't see it that way.

At this point, I'd have let Willie have the damn brooch if it meant getting him out of the house as soon as possible. Of course I've never had any heirlooms to be sentimental about.

LOL, yeah I have to agree that if only Willie treated the girls with as much awe and admiration as he does with pretty jewelry, perhaps he wouldn't have had to worry about getting the bum's rush.

DarkLady, I think the lady whom you mentioned is Elizabeth's great-great-grandmother - two greats instead of one - having been the grandmother of Elizabeth's Collins grandfather.

But at the moment Josette is Elizabeth's great-grandmother, since David says Josette is his great-great-grandmother.  I doubt, however, that the brooch belonged to Josette, since I think Josette's name would have snuck into the dialogue if that were the case, so I'm figuring Elizabeth was talking about one of the three other great-great-grandmothers that Joeytrom mentioned.

she tells David that it's an heirloom, and that her great-grandmother gave it to her when she turned eighteen.
Good heavens, I saved my post, then reread yours, and must add: Did Elizabeth really say that?  Definitely not Josette, in that case.  Or did Elizabeth say, "It was my great-grandmother's, and it was given to me when I was eighteen."?

Yes, it's surprising, isn't it?  Karlen convinces me, but I still think: "Huh?"  On the other hand...sparkly things are pretty nice.

Joey and Lydia, I think you're both right. I haven't actually HEARD this ep. in a long time, so if you think Elizabeth says "great-great-great grandmother," I'm fine with that. Also if she says it was given to her without mentioning the giver. It's been a long time....

Actually, David says that about her great etc grandmother-- Liz just agrees.

Could Barnabas be implanting Willie's jewel fixation?

Back the disc/tape up, and just look at that look Jason gives Liz, right after he gives the pin back, and says "Certainly."!

I could have sworn that this time it was Abigail who had the thing with the pirate.   Naomi had jewels buried with her, but that's all they said.  I'd thought it was Naomi with the pirate, too.

Hmm...got to think about that.  It's a long-lasting fixation, and usually such things aren't long-lasting on Dark Shadows - but we don't have to be bound by that.  Still, what makes Willie receptive?

I prefer to think that Willie's love of beauty is innate, even if deeply buried, rather than the result of a spell--it makes him more three-dimensional.

Elizabeth got the broach when she was eighteen from her great grandmother which would seem to be from her mothers side.  She feels Willie isn't worth 1000 but when Jason drops the price to 500 shrewd woman that she is the deal is made.  The jewel is recovered, and David talks of more jewels.  Willie is enthralled.
