Tim Shaw and The Hand
« on: February 11, 2003, 04:51:17 AM »
Did I miss something, or how did Tim Shaw become instantly adept at using The Hand -- the occult techniques of which have eluded the presumably more knowledgeable Magda, Barnabas, Quentin, and Evan Hanley?

Don't tell me there's a back story where Tim Shaw has a longstanding interest dabbling in the occult late at night at Worthington Hall ...

after seeing what the hand did to hanley and quentins face, Shaw was either very brave or very desperate.....[nerv]

And when you see who he winds up taking back with him, you'll really believe it!!

Seriously though, it did amaze me to see just how much Tim's behaviour and attitude have changed since he left Trask's school.  He was afraid to open up his mouth to save his life and now he's drinking, stealing, (the hand) and barging into people's homes demanding information from them!  What's gotten into him?  Was it being freed from Trask's school of hell or did Rachel's death suddenly change him?

Honestly Vlad, I don't know how he managed to get ahold of the hand and not be affected by it the way others have been.  He went to Evan Hanley's for information on it but seeing what happened to Evan's face when he had the hand, I doubt there was any helpful information Evan could have given him, or he would have used it for himself.

You are so right, cassandra. In a good storyline, the character develops gradually in the plot. This was INSTANT change from one personality to another. Tim Shaw with the hand??? Doesn't make sense!

Mabye that Latin book he was translating for Evan was "How to Use the Hand of Count Petofi."

Considering some of the responses above, I'm just glad I didn't press my identification of the Hand with the infamous "Hand of Glory" (from another thread) ...

The Latin book/kill Minerva thing is one of my LEAST favorite sub-plots.....can't watch it anymore. And agree from this point on the character change in Tim makes no sense......and he becomes increasingly annoying IMHO.

Tim definitely changed once he
got ahold of the infamous hand. When he was still a teacher I remember he did try and help Jamison and Nora somewhat (he even saved Nora's life after the school burned down). Even though he betrayed Rachel, you could see he didn't really like doing it, it was just Trask was able to intimidate him just as much as he did Rachel and the children.

However, once Tim gets the hand he goes through a dramatic personality change. He's more ambitious, more greedy and more willing to use people. He was willing to use Amanda to get back at Trask, he even wanted her to marry the guy so they could get their hands on the Collins fortune that Trask would inherit once he did away with Judith. (In that respect Tim was as bad as Trask).
I don't blame Tim for wanting to get back at Trask and Evan but his methods of doing it was unscrupulous.
