Laura assiduously assures David that a mother, and only a mother, can understand everything about her child.  Such hogwash.  My impression is that David won't be around for long enough to learn that it's hogwash, however.  I was surprised to learn that Dr. Guthrie was sure that this night with Laura wouldn't harm David.  If Laura's the villainess, why shouldn't she act now rather than later?  But Guthrie wants to have a séance, and at this stage of the series, apparently one doesn't conduct séances at the drop of a hat the way they will later on.  So Guthrie persuades himself that David won't be hurt tonight because the engraved invitations for the séance haven't been sent out yet.

Josette's not so sure that David's OK, and comes to check up - whereupon Laura calls her by name, and seems quite familiar with her.  What is going on in the the world of the supernatural that we don't see?  Back when Laura was in the Old House drawing room alone with Josette's portrait, what silent communication took place?  At the time, I didn't feel that any did, but now I'm not so sure.  There's a tussle going on between Laura and Josette, and we're not allowed to see much of it.  It may be a royal battle rather than a tussle, but I didn't get that impression from the interaction between Laura and Josette today.  On the other hand, I may be conditioned by the sorts of things that went on later in the series.  Maybe the spirit world was raging with strange forces flying around, while all we saw was Laura firmly telling Josette, "Go away," and Josette going away.

Incidentally, it didn't appear to be Kathryn Leigh Scott playing Josette today.  It looked more like Clarice Blackburn to me.  The Josette looked older, but also more like her portrait, I thought, and I remembered that in the original Josette story, several years elapsed between her marriage to Jeremiah and her death.

I think Josette and Laura's battle is meant to be on some astral plane not accessible to our merely mortal senses. I like it that the writers have left it to our imaginations. But Laura is right in that Josette is unable to make physical contact with David. I imagine that if she could, she would drag him from the cottage.

Dr. Guthrie suggests holding a séance. Yes! Yes!!! YES!!!!!! (Wish I had that milestone emoticon.)

Here you go, DarkLady:[milestone]  "milestone" between brackets does the job.  Of course, on the actual day the séance, we'll need a milestone icon the size of the moon.

I like it that the writers have left it to our imaginations.

Surely not you, Lydia!  [snow_smiley]

Thanks for the milestone icon, too--can't wait to see that moon-sized version!

Pshaw, Lydia!  You were doing pretty well with the hidden psychic warfare speculations!   I like what both you and DL said on that.

Carolyn: "There's no mystery about my aunt Laura as far as I'm concerned!  She did something to my mother!"   I'm glad she got that solved.

Laura now has the brown afghan, and has David sleeping on it.   It's all clear to me now.   The afghan facilitates teleportation.   She ordered the travelling afghan to pop into Liz's room and then pop Laura herself in, on top of it.   Now she hopes to pop David into Pheonixland sometime during the night.  Or she just liked Liz's afghan and swiped it.

Very familiar Barn era music-- starts when Josette appears at Laura's place.   Is this its first time on DS?

The thing is, I can't imagine the hidden psychic warfare.  I come up with something like the movie Independence Day - little fighter jets zooming all around - and I just don't think that's correct.  I think probably it should be waves instead of particles, but I can't visualize little fighter waves zooming all around.

It seems as time goes on Josette becomes stronger. I wonder if it was David's arrival or Vickie's or the combination.   Seance! Can't wait.
you know there's a whole wing that's closed off all the time; the west wing, I go there lots of times
