heck of a show today
« on: November 22, 2002, 12:38:43 AM »
today was one of those episodes that endeared most of us to just how cheesey dark shadows can be. First of all, we have the dashing hero Tim Shaw, rushing into the burning room. but it looked like only half the room was burning, as we see him put a coat over his head and not one flame to be seen. Then our hero, amidst the flames, grabs up nora, and in what looks like he has a corn cob rammed up his rear, exits the burning room in about as horribly contorted face as you could imagine.  Then as they are far enough away from the fire to turn back and look at the inferno, that scene was worse than any 1950s japanese Godzilla movie. And finally, the 3 of them arrive back at collinwood, none the worse for their ordeal, cept for Laura being exhausted, probably from watching Shaw tote nora the entire way, and the foyer is filled with smoke....gotta love it!
its a sudden death that i know, my father wrote me to say that, my cousin, uncle jeremiah was, was very disturbed.

Don't ya love it !!!  LOL
Remember a week or so ago when there was a scene in the graveyard with all the fog, and then the next scene in the Old House drawing room?  It was FILLED with the fog!  I almost expected the actors to start waving their hands in front of their faces so they could see each other.  ROFL
It doesn't GET any better than this!  I just love everything.  Like the other day...there was a scene with Millay and Selby.  He leaves the room and the camera moves in and lingers on her for no apparent reason.  Well, there WAS a reason -- to give him time to run to the other set!!

It's just all so priceless, isn't it?  And then, amidst all the technical stuff, the microphone shadows, the noise from the crew, and precious little time to learn lines, you'll get a wonderfully executed scene between the actors!
My favorite today was the Quentin/Laura scene in the bedroom.  I was absolutely mesmerized.

That did look cheesy!  But then again, every fire on this show does! [kaiokn]

Im glad it wasn't just me because I really thought my eyes were going this time!  It's funny how neither of them had even as much as a patch of soot on them and their clothes were all just perfect!  Yep, you definetely gotta love this show! ;-)

I haven't been able to follow the show these last couple of months, but I was talking last night with a friend who has, and I just knew this ep -- one of my all-time favorites, too -- had to be around the corner.  I was telling him how I LOVED how the actors so nonchalantly ignored the smoke in the foyer.  I imagine that everybody must have been gagging during the commerical breaks!  And I can just hear all the laughter  erupting on the set after that day's taping.

Imperfections like these strengthen our great endearment for DS.  Where else can you find a show like it??  I'm reminded of a comment made in one of the DS books by KLS (or Lara Parker), in which she recounts that flowers arrived one day on the set with a card that read simply and earnestly, "Dark Shadows, I love you!"  It was signed by Joanne Woodward.  KLS mused that Woodward must have been laughing.

My favorite was the burning building. Egad, that was worse than the paper model they used for Nicholas' house by the sea! And the perspective between the people and the house was just hilarious.

I WAS impressed though with the fire in the urn. Other than being more red than orange, it actually looked real! Maybe it was? I know real fire is quite problematic with old filming methods, so maybe not.
