...of my esteemed ancestor Ben Stokes. Yes, now I remember: he paid her a great deal of money for a Stokes family tree, which unfortunately turned out to be an obvious fake because it showed my own birthday as being February 29, when in fact I was born on the 30th.

(Appreciation most appreciated!  I'm not sure I'm making sense though... unless young innocent Magda was faking an adult gypsy's knowledge of curses... there that's it.  Logic all tidied up...)
