We are treated to an atypical opening shot of Collinwood.
Roger is slated to die...but not today. Roger survives the accident much to Liz's (and Vicki's) relief. We'll have to wait for David's reaction. He's asleep, or as Vicki puts it, "At least his eyes were closed when I went in." No doubt he will be severely disappointed when he wakes to the news that his father has survived to see another day.
Liz suspects Burke and a conversation with Matthew who is certain the brakes were tampered with, all but confirms her suspicions. Vicki on the other hand is not so sure. This gauls Liz and the ensuing conversation leads to Liz labelling Carolyn a child. This becomes quite apparent in the next scene at the Blue Whale.
Carolyn's behavior is atrocious. Her immaturity and naivety are on full display. Burke's behavior is somewhat puzzling. One moment he encourages Carolyn and Joe's relationship and the next he seems to be undermining it. Joe's behavior is totally understandable. He walks out on her after she goes too far. He should have at least insisted on bringing her home though.
During a brisk and abrasive bonding session Liz pressures Vicki into snitching on Carolyn. Liz is in a tizz over the fact that Carolyn is pursuing Burke. Then she is stunned into mortification when she learns that Carolyn has left the Blue Whale alone with Burke, the man she believes tried to kill her brother.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Bennett and Moltke have some great scenes with great dialogue. Liz mentions a person living with years of hate and bitterness is capable of almost anything. This made me think of her and Paul. "Wait. It seems like I've been doing that all of my life." she tells Vicki. This conjures up so many scenarios in my head including the 18 years. I'm a little surprised that she might think Matthew could harm a family member but he admits it. And how about Liz's vignette about the house, stating bringing David to grow up there was probably the worst thing she could have ever done. "This is no place for young people. It's old and decaying and smells of death." Great stuff. Later Liz states that Carolyn, in her pursuit of Burke, "...is reaching out for something that she doesn't understand." I love that line.
Joe is a hoot (dancing aside, lol). More great/fun dialogue in the Blue Whale scenes. Love all of Joe's snide remarks regarding Burke and his thwarted movie date with Carolyn. I don't blame Joe one bit for walking out. Poor Joe.
Liz calls it the kitchen so I guess that's what it is. I would expect a very large kitchen in a 40 room house. I'm going with alwaysdavid's description of it as an eat-in kitchen.
Is this our first sighting of the Dark Shadows mascot, the Collinsport Fly?

Loved your post, MB.
I like this episode. It's packed with emotional concern and caring. Vicki and David, Liz and Roger. I like all the scenes and performances. It's nice not seeing the usual tension and animosity between Liz and Roger. And I'm always a big sucker for Vicki's caring talks with David. At least he's sitting still for her. I can see progress and it makes me feel good and I like that. David's still a monster though, isn't he. Killing his own father, and trying to pin it on Vicki. What the hell was I thinking just two sentences ago?!! The stage is set for Burke's second pinning by a Collins albeit unintentional this time around.
Liz senses danger and begs Roger not to go. David gives his father a chance to save his own life but Roger doesn't bite. David tells his mother telepathically that his father dies tonight! Liz asks Vicki to hold her hand while she frets. Liz confirms what we already know to be an understatement - Roger is not fond of his own son. A timely phone call from Burke beautifully sets him up to look guilty for another crime he hasn't committed. A second phone call confirms Liz's fear. Roger's been in a car accident, his fate as yet undetermined. Final fade on a clinically and emotionally detached monster.
All this groovy outdoor footage. I wonder if Curtis is trying to be different or if all the other soaps are doing the same thing. I also wonder if the school-aged audience knew what was going to happen to Roger. I mean who the hell knows what a bleeder valve is or even looks like. I guess  the mechanics magazine gives it away.

Not liking the Collins children much. Carolyn's foolishness is getting quite irksome. David IS a f**king monster as described. Watching the two of them makes me so disgusted I can barely muster the want to write about the episode. I don't remember there being a secret door in David's room but I don't believe a ghost opened the door at the end of the hall. I love Vicki's heartfelt plea to David for a truce. Unfortunately the little fuckface takes advantage of it. I wonder if Roger was like that when he was a kid. It appears as though Vicki is helping raise two children, neither of which heed her advice. Joe meets Vicki. Nice/cute scene. How can you not like (and feel sorry for) Joe. Vicki and David have another conversation and he brings up Burke Devlin hating his father and Vicki calls him on his obsession with hate. And once again she tries to guide him in the right direction. What a waste of compassion (at this point). Joe & Carolyn & Burke & the Blue Whale. Joe doesn't like or trust Burke. Carolyn invites Burke to sit with them. Not sure this qualifies her being a bitch but I am calling her one. Burke mentions not wanting to be a fifth wheel. I think that honor will probably go to Joe by visits end.

I'm liking Vicki more with each episode. Same for Joe & Liz. The shot of the moon and drop to the house was used in episode one during Vicki's opening voice-over.

We get treated to new outdoor footage - Vicki's approach to Matthew's cottage. And, wow, that's some cottage that Liz gifted Matthew. Is this the same cottage we see throughout the show's run? While Vicki questions Matthew I think to myself, what could he possibly know that could help her. Then it occurred to me that he could be the guy who went to Bangor every month to mail the fifty bucks. After all, Liz wouldn't want the letter postmarked Collinsport. Vicki learns about Burke's trial and prison stint. And more about Roger and his wife (who happened to be Burke's girl?!). They got married and moved to the state capital of Augusta after the trial. Why Matthew thinks Augusta would be a better place for Vicki to start her search is beyond me. A plot device I guess.
Burke and Roger have their first meeting. No fireworks but we do learn that it's Roger's testimony that convicted Burke and now Burke's revenge plot makes a whole lot more sense. Roger lays his cards on the table and Burke stays the course of deceit. Liz makes tea (lol).
More new outdoor footage as Vicki leaves the cottage, then to the garage where she finds Burke at Roger's car. I guess now that she knows about Burke's prison stint she's become more suspicious of him. After seeing him with a wrench in his hands she asks Liz if Roger has plans to go out.
One of the more interesting things to me in this episode is the setting up of Matthew's violent tendencies, especially towards the well-being of Liz.

I like that Miss Hopewell is looking out for Vicki by letting her know that Strake, who finally admitted that he was a PI, was making detailed inquiries. I'm looking forward to Vicki receiving Miss Hopewell's letter.

Excellent recap.
Another good opening voice-over. Great opening scene. Both actors are on their game. And I agree, the Maggie we come to know shows up in this episode. I welcome her with open arms. Vicki is learning how to handle Roger and does so quite well up there on Widows Hill. And again, I totally agree, Roger seems poised to give Vicki a quick shove. I like the writing in their scenes together. Maggie's closing in on Sam's torture. I don't remember if she eventually learns the whole truth. I absolutely love KLS's performance in this episode. I bet this is the first time Roger has ever shown contempt for Carolyn. She deserves it. Though I don't remember if it was ever made clear to her, as it was to Vicki, that he is a dangerous man and is to be avoided at all costs.
I got robbed! If it wasn't, this should have been a Friday show. Stalling Burke's and Roger's face to face from Thursday to Monday would have made me stay home from school. I wouldn't have been able to run home fast enough, lol.

We are treated to a rare opening shot of Collinwood. I'll be looking for it again to see just how rare a shot it actually is. I enjoyed this episode very much.

Carolyn kind of annoys me in this episode, in the beginning anyway. Liz is no fool and invites Burke in. He does his best to convince her he's harmless. Liz remains sceptical and rightly so. Burke might be more convincing if he'd stop showing interest in acquiring the house (and the business). This episode is entertaining for it's dialogue. Sam does not disappoint in that department. Mr. Wells is a Mr. Rogers with a penchant for gossip. Sam gets more anxious by the minute. He practically faints when he finds out Burke is at Collinwood. As far as he's concerned his fate is sealed. Carolyn appears to be back on track with Joe. Perhaps the most exciting part of this episode is knowing that tomorrow's episode will bring Roger and Burke together face to face.

I got a kick out of hearing a car horn during a Collins Port Inn location shot. I agree that it's odd that there is no phone upstairs.

They're really playing up the idea of ghosts. David talks to them (the widows) and witnesses their misdeeds (the teacup). David appears to have a direct line to them. David has an unnatural fear of his father and we learn why as Roger and Liz have what they think is a private conversation. David's toy robot betrays him. Bad for David but good for us. We learn that Roger's wife is also involved in this mess regarding Burke. And now Roger has an unnatural fear of his son. Liz seems to hold all the cards where Roger and David are concerned, luckily for David.

Carolyn holds her own but eventually gets hoodwinked by Burke. So much so that she brings him home to mother, lol. Liz is not as amused am I am.

Roger is quite despicable.

Another good episode. The Collins' have an ally in Bill Malloy. We already knew that but now we know just how far he'll go for Liz and Carolyn's sake. He attempts to see Burke face to face and tries to send Carolyn out of town to protect her. If Liz is not convinced Burke is going to be a problem, Bill is. I'm not all that convinced that Roger's absence is all that telling. If I'm correct, Roger's been away with his wife and child. So he probably hasn't been part of the business for a long time. And Bill does call Roger. But this does remind me that in episode 3? he gives Bill grief about not being considered responsible or important enough to talk to about the family business. Carolyn becomes a problem, a big problem. She invites herself up to Burke's room. Good grief.
Everyone did really well but Nancy Barrett was superb.

I wanna say that the opening voice-over was a little corny but I don't remember it because this episode blew me away. It's my second favorite to date. It was exciting and engrossing. I don't think Carolyn is in love with Joe. Since last episode I've been wondering what Joe wanted to talk about. I figured it was Burke. I didn't remember it was about the promotion. Poor Joe, Carolyn cut him down at the knees twice. Third time's the charm as we'll learn in time. Joan has one of her better days if I remember correctly. She had nothing but great scenes to act today. I was on the edge of my seat. Especially when Joe told Liz about Burke Devlin. Now that we know she knows we want to know. Obviously Burke wants to know as well.

Burke can be rather charming. Almost likeable. Is it an act? Probably so. Roger is back to his panicky self. The unholy pact between him and Sam is quite apparent now and is in danger of unraveling. It is also quite evident now that they did Burke some serious wrong. I find Sam pathetically funny. I hysterically hang on his every word. Looks like Burke is picturing himself as master of Collinwood. I'm finding it hard reading Maggie. Probably just a combination of soap opera acting and poor directing. Well, it's not hard to tell when someone is going to break a glass in their bare hand.
It's strange that Burke has no angst against Sam. How could he not know Sam's role in his incarceration? Maybe it is explained and I have forgotten.

Another great opening voiceover. Having started watching during the Petofi period, seeing sets such as the kitchen (or is it more a ? ) and the basement is still a thrill for me. The storage room appears to have some great significance. We get a sense of the better/softer side of Liz in this episode. Her talk with David and Mathew's Liz speech make her out to be a good person with a bad secret or two. How can we not think Vicki is one of them. Of course she keeps denying it. And quite well to Vicki's face. Vicki and Carolyn have a conversation without Carolyn blowing up, lol. Apparently David & Roger hate each other. Come to think of it, no one likes Roger but Carolyn. What surprises me more than Mathew being unaware of Vicki's presence at Collinwood is that Vicki knows how to drive! Orphanage/NYC? Not likely.

I have two questions. Is David doing the widows' bidding or is he threatened by Victoria because he wants his mother back? The mom thing is totally plausible. But knowing what we know now, 50 years later,  so is the widows angle. And if the widows are talking to David is it because they know Vicki's fate? And do they care because she really is a Collins?  MB mentioned on the games board something regarding Paul Stoddard as a candidate for being Vicki's father. Our first hint of that is here in this episode as Carolyn makes the suggestion the Paul Left 18 years ago which coincidentally is when the $50 payments from Maine started arriving at the foundling home.

I like to amuse myself by pretending it is Roger that Vicki heard crying at two in the morning.

MB, it is correct to state that this is our first time seeing Vicki sleeveless in real time. But Vicki is wearing the same dress in her foundling home flashback in the diner in episode one.

Love the outdoor footage, especially the long shot of Vicki on Widows Hill.
