« on: February 06, 2004, 06:35:54 PM »
I highly value most of my DS items. The Ross novels are a sentimental fave because of my memories of collecting them during my youth. I don't think I've read more than one or two. The same (sentimental appeal) applies to the few 16 magazines I have featuring the "DS Gang", as they were sometimes noted on the cover. I love my DS books printed by Pom. Press (KLS's publishing co.). I buy books for the pictures (I'm not a reader by any stretch of the imagination) so the DS PP books are priceless to me personally. The original vinyl DS lp is also a prized possession. I (think I) have all the DS music CDs as well, and really treasure them.

The DS collectable that is the biggest part of my daily life is my one DS pink bordered trading card. It is of a shot taken during my fave part of the series and features two of my all-time favorite characters. I had it laminated and carry it in my wallet.

It was given to me by a fellow DS fan at the Vegas Fest. This was the Fest that introduced me (flesh and blood) to my core group of DS pals who have become dear personal friends. Besides that fabulous memory, viewing the card also brings back that "rush" I got as a kid with anything DS. Every time I open my wallet I take a peek at it and smile. Sometimes that comes in very handy, particularly during the course of a long hard crummy day.

Of course I treasure my set of MPI tapes. My faves being the "Collector's Series", which features the pre-Barn episodes. If I could only keep one DS collectable, it would be the collector's Series, hands down. These volumes I will take to the grave. I eagerly await their release to DVD.

I have a few other items but they don't mean that much to me, though I am more than thrilled to own them.

Current Talk '24 I / Re:WB ORDERS FILMING OF NEW DS PILOT
« on: January 28, 2004, 07:02:24 PM »
You know, since we heard and started speculating about this possible new version of DS, I've been catching shows on the WB and other stations and "making believe" that I am watching the new DS just to see if I can shatter my own prejudices (sp?) about a new DS as compared to the original and being able (myself) to accept the new DS for what it is. Interestingly enough, I have seen some shows (minutes only, I admit) that actually could have been the new DS, meaning that they involved darkness, big houses, spooky scenarios, and Dark Shadowseque type characters. Most interestingly for me was trying to accept younger (teenage) actors in the imaginary roles. So far I've found that I can accept the premise of a new DS if the mood of the show is right. I am finding it a bit harder to accept teenagers in the roles, but mostly when they are taking the place of established characters (fantasy wise, in my own head). I find it much easier to accept teens if I make believe that they are totally new characters. I have decided that however (and if) it's presented, I am going to watch the new DS no matter what, but I do hope (now that I've tested myself) that somehow they will present the show with a new cast of characters, save Barnabas, perhaps with guest appearences by original cast members reprising their original roles. I doubt that will happen because, let's face it, they'll probably want to do the release of Barnabas as opposed to having Barn already there, picking it up in present day. It just wouldn't be interesting enough to pull in viewers without the intro of Barn as vamp attacking everyone in sight and us waiting to see how he gets himself out of seemingly impossible situations relating to his being caught. I'd love to see a new Barn with John Karlen as an older (if not, wiser) Willie Loomis. It would make sense that Barn wouldn't age while Willie has, along with Maggie, Carolyn, and other original cast members who's mortality would make them aged in 2004.

Anyway...here's to coming one step closer to a new DS, hooray!!

I'd say that is promising news! Thanks for the report, Jimbo.

PS - I wonder how long it'll be before we hear about cast members? How exciting!

Happy Birthday!

Saw Joan Bennett on the silver screen last night in RECKLESS MOMENT. Thought of you, Luciaphil. Thought of how much fun it would be reading your take on it. Have you seen it?

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Thanks, one and all, for your birthday wishes to me. They were, and are very much appreciated. (I'm of that rare breed that enjoys each progressive birthday more than the last. I'm not getting older, I'm getting fatter...uh, I mean happier! Yeah, that's it, happier!) :D

Went to Lake Tahoe and rented a cabin for the weekend and had a great time. No snowfall but there was plenty of snow on the ground and that made me very happy. Also had my first taste of the Black Jack table. And though I'm by no means a gambler, I enjoyed it very much. So easy and much better chances at winning than the slots. I could have walked away a winner but who the heck is gonna leave the table after only ten minutes of play!? Am I a casino's dream or what?

Oh! And thanks for behaving while I was away, lol.  ;)

Again, thank you very much. Your BD greetings was the icing on the cake.

Sincerely,
dom

How sweet of you to be interested, ProfStokes. I'm afraid none of those cassettes have survived my torrid life, (it's a miracle that I have, lol). Back then we practically rerecorded over those 120 minute tapes until they broke. But to be totally honest, had they survived, I'd be much too embarrassed to transcribe them for public consumption. Where The Action Is was hosted by Paul Revere and the Raiders, right? My sister (and her now infamous girlfriends) used to watch that also, along with all the other Rock and Roll shows. I only watched for two reasons, The Supremes and The Shangri-las. Don't ever recall seeing them on WTAI though.

I had a friend, Albert, who used to do an hysterical imitation of Barnabas dancing to those 60's tunes.

Fangs for the memory,
dom

PS - Connie, I used to verbaly act out the parts (the dialog) into that tiny portable cassette player.

Hi BenStokes. Welcome.

A quick word to say that I am thoroughly enjoying reading through this thread. The commonalities make for fun discovery.

**Spoiler ahead for those who haven't seen the pre-Barn eps yet**

My first glimpse of Dark Shadows happened during a stroll thru our living room. My older sister and her girlfriends were watching it during it's original run. It was the scene where...
Laura Collins was attempting to get David to come into the flames with her as Viki was trying to save him.
I stood there mesmerized. It was by far the weirdest thing I'd ever seen. It made no sense to me at age nine.

I caught back up with the show and started watching on a regular basis during 1897 sometime after Petofi came on the scene and stayed with it through about half of 1840.

I tuned in for the last episode and was so disappointed because I didn't have a clue as to what the heck was going on. But it was still a sad and sentimental farewell nonetheless.

My family still ribs me about my past DS viewing. I used to put blankets over the windows so that it would be as dark as possible in the apt when I would watch the show, lol. They busted me once but that was enough to have to hear about it the rest of my life.  ::)

Thank goodness they never caught me during my other "secret" DS related activities of which only one I'll admit to here. I used to play the DS album for background music and create my own episodes on cassette tapes. [blshy]
