Nicky -- Congratz on a great milestone. My daughter graduated a few months ago, and she's really finding life to be exciting (and challenging). I'm sure you'll grab it by the horns (or fangs, as the case may be).

BTW -- Castlebee, yer Vampup pic is absolutely priceless. ;)

Well, Rainey my friend, I've got good news and bad news.  Next to these episodes, I thought that some of the scenes in the 1970 storyline (David and Hallie, Quentin and the lilacs) were pretty horrendous.  Donna McKechnie's Amanda Harris made me want to scream too.  However, those episodes won't run for at least a couple more years.

Heh; I never particularly minded Amanda Harris, and Dr. Lang is a hoot, painful though he may be. However, Hallie Stokes nearly turned me into a slobbering, raving axe murderer. STOP THAT GOD-AWFUL WHINING!  ;)

Gimme the Naga box. That snake pattern would really complement our decor. And if we get a heavy breathing thing behind a door in the bargain, we'll be in seventh heaven.

All right, who gave BOB permission to venture forth into daylight, much less plague us with his existence?

Wasn't me, I promise!

Nyuck nyuck nyuck....

Thanks to all for the nice wishes! Just got back from Charleston, after a really great weekend. Spent the day on the U.S.S. Yorktown today, which was sorta the highlight for me. ;)

>>Note to self: Pick yerself off the damn floor after having great big laughing fit from Mike Miozza's painting.

>>Note to self 2: Include Mike as doomed character in upcoming short story or novel. Make sure demise is the most gruesome yet conceived.<<

Point of curiosity - how do you expand the headers?

Josette -- It depends on what program you're using. If you're on Outlook Express, right click on the email in the list, select "properties" and then click the "details" tab. You'll see several "Received from" entries; usually the bottom one shows the actual email address that originated the message.

If you're using Yahoo, Hotmail, or another Web-based mail program, there are highlighted links at the top of the screen that you just click to expand the headers.

I've been receiving messages, about one a day, that claim to be huge files, but contain no message and no attachment.  I've assumed that since there is no attachment, I'm safe.

Not entirely. I've received worms the same way, without an apparent attachment. If your antivirus program is scanning the emails, it should identify it if it's infected. If you're running OE 5.0 or 5.5 without the later security patches, the worm can run itself; but if you have the security patches, or use OE 6.0, it won't open and all you'll see is that blank screen. If you're running Netscape or another mail program, the worm won't open itself.

Quote
The first supposedly came from the SciFi Bulletin Boad!  Another was from a poster here (who did not send it) and today a "returned" message (that I hadn't sent) to someone with a definite DS name.  The others were total unknowns.  So, I'd really be curious to try that expanding the header and see if those are the worm and if it's all from the same place.

Yep, I've been getting the message from "Ezboard postmaster" as returned mail. But if you check the extended headers, it comes from an Earthlink address, and it may be from the person on this board who did get infected.

Thanks for the birthday wishes!  ;D  I'm still trying to figure out how it is I'm having a birthday again; seems I just had one a coupla weeks ago.

The missus and I are going to Charleston, SC, to stay at a bed & breakfast with some old friends of ours from Chicago. Gonna play some golf, eat some seafood, and hopefully stir up a coupla ghosts. Or ghouls, if no ghosts are to be found.

My best birthday present to myself was finishing Blue Devil Island, which has been three years in the works (off and on). And I just got a contributor copy of the anthology Dead But Dreaming, which features my story "Epiphany: A Flying Tiger's Story." It's a beautiful book from DarkTales Publications that just came out this past week. The editors were gracious enough to have mine as the lead story.

Thanky all....

Hi peoples,

I have at long last completed my newest novel, BLUE DEVIL ISLAND, and I'm currently composing the marketing pitch (ugg) to send to my agent along with the manuscript.

No vampires in this one; more like Leviathans who are actually scary. ;)  For anyone who's interested, I've put up a sample chapter on my Web site, and yer welcome to read it at yer leisure. Get it here:

http://home.triad.rr.com/smrainey/BDIChap4.htm

Note: This particular chapter is not scary. But there may be more samples to come that get creepier. Enjoy. ;)

And just for the record, in case anyone has forgotten: I HATE MICROSOFT!!

MB, yer calm restraint is admirable.  ;D

I have a friend who got a copy of Opera 6.01 from a friend at work (but don't spread that around ), and he told me that he didn't like it at all. His main complaint was that it still has a lot of rendering glitches, meaning many of his favorite sites displayed in all sorts of odd ways in Opera (colors were off, Java buttons looked funny (some too big, some too small), background details disappeared, etc.) from the way they display in Netscape and IE. I can't say that made me too intrigued to try it out for myself.

The latter is exactly the problem I had with it. It was fast and attractive, but there were some pages that were missing bits and pieces, sometimes crucial ones. For example, I do a lot of selling on Ebay; but using Opera, I couldn't even put up a listing because a few of the vital fields would not show up.

For that matter, at work, we have Netscape 4.5 on Mac G4s, which will allow me to read the boards here (albeit at a snail's pace), but I can't post because the message area is just a little box that is unusable.

Don't even get me started on Macs....

I might be wrong, it sure wouldn't be unusual, but it looked to me like Microsoft didn't have a more current download of Outlook Express than the 5.5 version I have. Is there any security feature with 5.5? How would I implement it? Or is there a newer version?

Kuanyin,

Internet Explorer 6 is available; it comes with Outlook Express 6; it can be downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp.

IE/OE 5.5 Service Pack 2 is available at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ie55sp2/default.asp. To implement the Service Pack for 5.5, just download it, close all your other Windows programs, run the install routine, and you're done.

I use 6.0, and in general am happy with it. Far fewer problems than 5.X. I've tried several other browser and mail programs, including Netscape, Opera, and Eudora, and I have to admit that (ulp) I prefer the MS products.

Don't worry, Mark, because you're not the only member of this forum who seems to have become infected. I've already recieved three copies of the virus from another forum member. The odd thing is that, unlike the e-mails it sent from your PC, the three copies I've received all pretended to come from someone else.

MB -- I didn't get infected; that was the point I was making. The virus inserts random addresses that it finds in an infected user's address book into the FROM field. My email address, Midnite's, Luciaphil's, etc. were in the address book of an infected member of the board, which is why it appears to be coming from us, but in reality it's not.

Please re-read my original post -- it explains the reason for the deceptive behavior of the worm, and that I definitely did NOT get infected or allow it to be sent out from my machine. ;)
