I've always liked the theme to "A Man and a Woman"; I remember hearing it on DS way back then and thinking, hey, that's the stuff my dad listens to! It sorta helped bring DS into the real world for me. Nowadays, I love old lounge lizard music. ;)  I do enjoy the Charles Randolph Grean Sounde recordings of the DS music because of that distinctive 60s easy listening style, mainly for its nostalgic value.

Ok, I'm gonna put something up for those of you who enjoyed DREAMS OF THE DARK and anything else of mine you were gracious enough to read.

Back when the future of the novel series had not been dashed by HarperCollins, I came up with a proposal for a new DS novel titled THE LABYRINTH OF DREAMS, with the possibility that Beth Massie would again co-write it. I composed a partial outline and actually wrote the first three chapters. Now that the chances of future books are slim, this thing's sitting here without a home.

So, what I'll do is post the first chapter for a couple of weeks, the second chapter after that, and finally the third. It'll leave you hanging, of course, but I might be willing to clue anyone who's interested to the possible ending by way of the original outline. ;)

I'm not advertising this site anywhere else and would appreciate it if others don't either. But you're free to read and enjoy it -- or not, whichever is appropriate. Any comments are welcome -- positive or negative. Don't worry, I'm a writer, and I've been trashed by the best and the worst of them. Never be bashful about speaking your mind.

If you don't like it, I promise I won't hurt you much.

So, here ya go....

I found out DS was ending for good about a day before the final episode, if I remember right. I was not pleased. As in "let's scream and holler and throw things" not pleased.

Seems like DS ended on a Friday. I tuned in on Monday to see if it was just somebody's idea of a bad joke. Alas, DS was really gone and Password was showing.

I finally quit screaming, hollering, and throwing things a few days ago.

I'm pretty sure the camera on DS must have been really scary. I can't count the number of times one actor or another looked right at my TV screen with an utterly terrified expression.

CYRUS LONGWORTH yuck yuck yuck

You know, there was always something about Cyrus, annoying though he might be, that--to me--made him a sympathetic, if not exactly likeable character. I always appreciated the fact that Chris Pennock finally got to play a good guy (more or less), which made it all the more effective during his subsequent manifestations of diverse temperaments. (How's that for avoiding a spoiler for folks who haven't yet seen future episodes?)

Only one character on DS has come close to driving me to stop drinking, and that's the Stokes girl. However, play even one note of "London Bridge," and I might involuntarily begin a diatribe about why duct tape and children make for such a perfect combination.

We have three vicious, rip-roaring housecats: Abbott, Charcoal, and Dusty. Abbott's the old fart of the bunch; the other two are 3-year-old sisters. They love their Uncle Abbott to death, but being an old curmudgeon, he doesn't want anything to do with them.

Abbott is occasionally known to watch too much television:

Mercy. A riot is an ugly thing. And I think it's about time we had one.

LEAVE IT TO CREATURE, episode 1

Julia: "Barnabas, I'm worried about the Creature. He's been hanging around with Buzz Hackett and Eddie Haskell down at the Blue Whale."

Barnabas: "Oh, I'm sure he's fine, dear. He's old enough to make his own decisions. Besides, in a few more years, he'll be able to drink legally."

Julia: "B-B-But Barnabas... He's not been acting quite himself. Haven't you noticed that his complexion is a little green?"

Barnabas: "Maybe it's just a bug. It'll pass. But you might want to give him a little sedative before he goes to bed."

Willy: "Hey, Mom, can I go out to the movies tonight? There's a Darren Gross film festival at the Bijoux."

Barnabas: "Son, don't you have homework to do tonight?"

Willy: "I've finished it all, Dad. Well...sort of."

Julia: "Willy, is Maggie Evans going to be at the show?"

Willy: "Well, um...maybe she is."

Julia: (smiling knowingly) "Barnabas, I think it'd be all right."

Barnabas: "Well, as long as you're not out too late. Remember, tomorrow's a school day."

Willy: "Gee, thanks! You guys are swell."

Barnabas: "Just be sure you don't abduct Maggie. You know how suspicious people can be in a small town."

Willy: "Oh, sure, Dad. Well, see you later."

Sound of the door knocker.

Larry Mondello: "Hi, I'm Larry Mondello. Have you seen the Beav?"

Barnabas: "I'm afraid you have the wrong show, son. But come inside. We may have need of your brain."

Larry Mondello: "Gee whiz, the Creature really does have swell parents!"

Cue music.

Hey, y'all! My newest short story, "The Sparklers," is currently up at http://www.thespook.com, downloadable for free. My credit appears on the cover along with a photo of Glenn "Sonny von Bulow" Close. Yippee.

What a reversal of fortune.

Ack. I didn't say that!

Current Talk '02 I / Re: Your own dream curse
« on: May 19, 2002, 06:09:11 AM »
One of the many that I've had was in high school, before I'd seen NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD; and DAWN OF THE DEAD hadn't been made yet. Like most of my dreams, it was in glorious technicolor and 70mm Cinemascope, with THX surround sound.

I was riding with a friend in his car through a strange town, and I saw a number of people lined up on top of a tall building. One of them jumped off and went splat on the ground. Another one followed, and I realized these people were all lined up to kill themselves. My friend and I got out of the car and ran to see what was going on. At the base of the building, a group of people was standing in a circle around some of the bodies; each person was passing a bucket from one to another to drink from. Apparently they had filled the bucket with blood from the dead people; I realized then that all the people drinking the blood were themselves reanimated dead. Then they passed the bucket to me. When I kinda panicked, they realized I was not one of them and began to chase me.

Somewhere in there, I woke up. I'm pretty sure they didn't get me because I'm still here.

This, like most of the nightmares I've had, ended up in one of my stories. For a vivid account of perhaps my most terrifying nightmare, read my story "Fugue Devil" in The Last Trumpet. ;)

Dueling three words:

Jeff Clark: "I love you."

Vicky: "I don't understand."

Barnabas: "But you must!"

Julia: "Buh - buh- Barnabas...."

Nicholas Blair: "Ha ha ha!"

Angelique: "I curse you!"

David: "Please believe me!"

Prof. Stokes: "I believe him."

Roger: "Enough of that!"

Elizabeth: "Stop it, Roger!"

Carolyn: "He's right, Mother."

Hallie: "I'm so frightened!"

Maggie: "You're a jerk."

Vicky (reprise): "I don't understand."
