I have all the soundtrack CDs, including the HOUSE/NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS soundtracks. I'm especially keen on the 30th anniversary collection, since it contains quite a bit of variety not present on the others. They're all great to listen to when writing fiction, DS or otherwise. ;)

Continued from the Make Your home COLLINWOOD!!! thread....

DARK SHADOWS: THE LABYRINTH OF SOULS
Outtake #2

The cold dawn of a new day found Julia Hoffman already out of bed, dressed, and hard at work on her research of the venom in Carolyn's blood. In the last 24 hours, she had discovered no new properties, isolated no unusual compounds, observed no variation in fresh samples, or otherwise made any more headway than she had on the first night. She felt thoroughly frustrated and very nearly defeated.

She was about to mount another specimen on the stage of the microscope when the phone rang. Her heart skipped a beat. Not again, she thought.

"Hello?" she whispered.

"Hello, Julia," came a soft, half-familiar feminine voice. "I have to tell you.... Carolyn is simply not suitable for Quentin. No one is suitable for Quentin."

"Except for you, don't you mean?"

"Exactly."

"Do you know what you are?" Julia snapped.

"Full of shit?"

"Absolutely right."

"Ah."

"Do not call here again," Julia said sternly, clenching one fist in anger. "If you do, I will turn you over to Sheriff Patterson and then you'll only get one phone call. I doubt you will wish to waste it on me."

"Don't bet on it, Julia."

"I'm going to say good-bye now. Remember my advice."

There was a round of muted giggling, a click, and then the line went dead. Julia gently placed the receiver back on its cradle, wondering why this mysterious caller--and her giggling friend--continued to plague her. The caller seemed to know too much about her--and the whole Collins family.

Perhaps the strange, deluded woman simply watched too much television.

DARK SHADOWS: THE LABYRINTH OF SOULS
Outtake #1

Julia Hoffman had been unable to identify the strange substance in Carolyn's blood, even after countless experiments with various tissue samples--including her own blood and tissue from the inside of her cheek.

If only there were a way to make the substance react with any normal matter, perhaps she would have a clue.

Her reverie was interrupted by the jangling sound of the telephone. With a scowl of annoyance, she reached for the receiver; in a hoarse whisper, she said, "Hello?"

"Dr. Hoffman?"

"Yes."

"Try using a sample of Quentin's blood. The reaction could be...interesting."

"Why do you think Quentin's blood would make a difference?"

"Because I watch the show regularly."

"What?! Who is this?"

She detected the faint sound of giggling, and remembered a certain call she had received all those many years ago. "Because he looks so great, you know his blood would absolutely kick ass."

"You're full of shit. Good bye." Julia slammed down the phone and returned to her experiments, praying that she would never be subjected to the deviant mind of the mysterious caller who seemed to still be preying on her nerves, even after so many decades.

At least, she thought, Quentin has not yet been subjected to such harrassment. Now more than ever, he needs a reason to live.

There's been a sudden death in my family and I'm not able to get into my "Julia nonsense" frame of mind at the moment.

So sorry to hear it, Connie. Deepest condolences.

Best,

Hmm......

((Trying to figure out if there's a place in LABYRINTH where I can write in Connie calling Julia and being told she's full of shit....))

Well, you never know when you're going to need some comic relief...and truth is always sillier than fiction. ;)

LOL! With reactions like that, who could refuse?

LOL and cutting rug.....isn't that like actual dancing? like not slow dancing?  oh well. WRITE MORE!!!!!

Yeah, "cutting a rug" would refer to a more spirited dancing, but with "Pennsylvania 6-5000," you'd probably have a bit more momentum going than with "Stardust."  ;)

Just started Chapter 8, so it'll be around in a few days.

Bear in mind, of course, that all of these are just first drafts (and probably final, for that matter). But since I don't have a highly paid, professional editor checking behind me, should someone's copy-editing instincts suddenly get stirred up by any errors, feel free to email me. I already discovered a slight gaffe, in that in Chapter 1, Julia's room is on the second floor, and later it's on the third. I've corrected the draft so that both are consistent (and on the third floor).

Back to work...

Ralph, Alice, Ed, and Trixie are my favorite character names.

You know, those distant relatives that stayed in the less-expensive wing that overlooked the run-down courtyard....

I think they all spring from Dorcas Trillings's branch of the Collinsport clan.

And thanks for having a bald guy in the story!   Please keep it coming!

What was I thinking? In the text of the story, please change the line where Dr. Karswell introduces himself so that it reads:

"Good morning. My name is Ringo Karswell. Yes, it's true... I have no hair."

I meant to do that originally, but at the last minute I totally forgot about it.

I wish there was some way we could let Harper Collins know what they are missing. Are they the ones who dropped the idea of a DS series?

Yes; not long after DREAMS OF THE DARK came out, HarperCollins changed management, our editor left, several series were dropped (including DS), and the future of the books left in limbo. By all indications, it's a dead horse at the moment. For a time, there appeared to be the possibility of another publisher picking up the series, but it hasn't borne any fruit.

I certainly do appreciate those of you who've read what I've done on LABYRINTH thus far. I've always hated to start something and not finish it, but there has to be a reason for going ahead on a project other than pure self-indulgence. Y'all have provided a reason. Thanks! ;D

Depressed about not being able to go to the fest this year, I spent most of the weekend writing a new chapter of DARK SHADOWS: THE LABYRINTH OF SOULS. So, okay, I had fun. And though I'm not making any money off this, it was a lot cheaper than flying to Anaheim and staying at a hotel. On the other hand, I didn't get to hang out with any stars.

D A N G I T !
and all that.

So you lucky people coming back from the fest have more DS to occupy your time, if you're so inclined. I imagine some of you might not have even read the previous chapter(s) yet, since I managed to zap them out pretty quickly, one after the other. So here's the links to the three most recent:

NEW: Chapter Six http://home.triad.rr.com/smrainey/labyrinth06.htm

Chapter Five http://home.triad.rr.com/smrainey/labyrinth05.htm

Chapter Four http://home.triad.rr.com/smrainey/labyrinth04.htm

Well, I hope you find these entertaining. HarperCollins don't know what they missin...  ;D

You also have to bear in mind that this man may have come without any real supervision and/or the person in "charge doesn't see that the behavior is a problem.  Just because there is supervision doesn't mean the "supervision" is too swift either in terms of what is and what is not appropriate behavior at an event like this.

Boy, ain't THAT the truth!
