Current Talk '02 II / Re: The Edge Of Night
« on: July 31, 2002, 07:02:52 AM »
When I was a kid, my mom watched THE EDGE OF NIGHT, along with AS THE WORLD TURNS and SECRET STORM. The opening of EDGE back then was quite memorable to me. The show held my interest on those occasions that I watched it, and I know I caught a few episodes of it in the early 80s.

Here's a link to a great Web site about the show:

The original Gojira is terrific, but the original version runs 97mins not three hours. Even so, it's 20-30 mins longer than the US release, if you subtract the newly shot Raymond Burr footage.

Ever seen the Japanese cut of GODZILLA 98 (Gojira, 1984)? That one is much, much better as well with all of the stupid comic relief and Raymond Burr stuff gone. Though Burr does a sincere job, the intent of the rest of the scenes is idiotic.

Yah, I have copies of the original Japanese versions of all the Toho films. The original GOJIRA is an incredibly powerful film. Last year at the Godzilla fest in Chicago, the con rented out the nearby cinema, and showed it, as well as a couple of other G films, on the big screen, which was a major treat.

The one film that Americanization killed more than any other was KING KONG VS GODZILLA. The original is absolutely hysterical, with lots of tongue-in-cheek humor and obviously superb acting. All of this is lost in the dubbing and needless editing of scenes. Plus, the original score by Akira Ifukube, which was mostly deleted for U.S. release, is one of his best.

If anything happens to Quentin, I'll die -- I swear.

Lord help me, what am I gonna do if I end up killing Connie? I don't know if I would be able to live with myself!

Ah well... I guess I'd just have to go live with someone else.

Chapter 12 is well into the works. Somebody be ready to call an ambulance in case Connie gets too excited.

MB, you know, in this light you have marked resemblance to Nicholas Blair.

MB tends to be a WEE bit more benevolent than NB, at least when circumstances are right....

So, I went over to AMC/tv.com and sent an email to their complaint department.  I may or may not get an answer but at least I feel better.

I've sent a number of emails to AMC-TV for various reasons, and it usually takes a while, but I've always received a personal response addressing the issue.

'Tis here: DARK SHADOWS: THE LABYRINTH OF SOULS Chapter 11. A few RL issues interfered with the writing this week, so it's a little later being posted than I hoped. And I haven't had a chance to do much proofreading, so if you find boo-boos, don't hesitate to bring them up and I will correct them (unless, of course, your name is BooBoo and you're trying to steal my pickanick basket).

NEW! Chapter 11:

Chapter 10:
http://home.triad.rr.com/smrainey/labyrinth10.htm

Chapter 9:
http://home.triad.rr.com/smrainey/labyrinth09.htm

Again, since some people have emailed me wondering how to access earlier chapters: just go to one of the links, rubout the two-digit number after /labyrinth, and place the chapter number you want; i.e., /labyrinth01, /labyrinth02, etc.

Enjoy. And please feel free to post your comments.

Actually, I was glad to see FRANKENSTEIN - THE TRUE STORY because I haven't seen it since its first airing, and I remembered it as being pretty decent. I watched the first hour of it and recorded the rest, since, by then, my old bones were growing weary. Will probably watch the rest of it today. The part I did watch matches my memory exactly; looking forward to seeing more.

Still, it's annoying as hell that AMC runs an entirely different movie from what they advertise -- and even their promo 30 seconds before the start of the film was for the DC version. It makes it a bit difficult to trust their program schedule. They did the same thing a few months ago with GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA; instead of the superior 1964 version, they ran the newer, 1992 G VS. M. A bit easier to understand, given the titles, but still -- one would hope their programmers would do a spot of double-checking before they list something on their schedule.

Yup, I'm able to access stuff now. Thanks, MB. This just goes to prove that there's nothing wrong with you that expensive surgery can't prolong. ;)

Please, let's not give all of these wonderful ladies on the the Dark Shadows Forum web site the impression that we're all rapidly turning into dirty, old men (even if we all really are!).

"Turning" into dirty old men? Apparently we have a late bloomer.  ;D

How else in day to day activity is Barnabas very much part of the 20th Century?

That's easy. Just look at all the women around him giving him the eye and wondering "Boxers or briefs?"

Has anyone ever noticed that the good Dr Hoffman always uses the same word whenever she is talking with Barnabas??? " Well PERHAPS WE SHOULD DO IT LIKE THIS !!!  Or Perhaps it might be a ghost from the past ( Just making these up sort of speak) Wonder if she realizes it?????

Annie -- PERHAPS you have hit upon something. ;)

Surely the most pervasive line in the entire series:

"But you MUST!"

Current Talk '02 II / Re: Vampire Victims

I wonder if the different reactions to the bites by different characters were part of the script or just the actors interpretations.

Possibly a bit of both going on here.

POSSIBLE SPOILER

Although I doubt the writers ever took it into consideration during this part of the series, DARK SHADOWS established by precedent an organic catalyst, if not cause, for vampirism, i.e., the cell that Julia found in Barnabas's (and his victims') blood. Therefore, just as bacteria and viruses have different strains -- and individuals have various reactions to them based on their physical constitutions -- it is logical to assume that victims of a vampire might exhibit different characteristics as well.

Not only that, one could also make the case that the vampires themselves have different powers and vulnerabilities for the same reason. I addressed this issue directly in DREAMS OF THE DARK by having our new vampire, Thomas Rathburn, be subject to a whole different set of criteria than Barnabas Collins. Given his origin, Rathburn could walk in daylight and withstand the crucifix unless the bearer had sincere faith in it. (Rathburn's characteristics were drawn more directly from DRACULA and other vampire myths than from DS itself; to account for this, I included the explanation to the effect that the characteristics of vampires were as varied as their number, i.e., no two were necessarily 100% alike.) Furthermore, Rathburn's victim (in this case, Victoria Winters), once beyond the initial narcotic effect of the vampire bite, became expressly uninhibited and aggressive in her behavior -- mainly because we absolutely refused to have Victoria wandering through the book with one hand over her neck whining "I don't understand."

Well, she didn't understand, but at least she didn't whine.

Anyway, one could infer that, within the DS universe itself, the different characteristics of vampires (even down to there being the occasional reflection in the mirror) are the result of different strains of the previously established "vampire cell." Anyway, I prefer exploring the possibilities this postulate opens over merely attributing a lapse of consistency to "just another blooper" (although they almost certainly were!).  ;D

Current Talk '02 II / Re: Just Slightly Off Topic: Background Music

Ringo -- Just connected into this, and what should they be playing but UK, which I was really into in the late 70s. I've checked out shitloads of the Live365 stations, but their sound quality is usually marginal at best, as this is; it's nice to hear the stuff, though, so I may bookmark this channel.

I've heard a fair amount of King Crimson's most recent, and it sounds pretty good. I was a big fan in the mid-70s, but after college I didn't keep up with them at all. I have music streaming from one source or another just about any time I'm on the computer; the cable is great for that. I generally put on Listen Rhapsody or Spinner, both of which have decent, eclectic selections, with nice sound quality. I've had loads of streaming sources at one time or another, but lately have limited myself to these two.

Ever check out any of the 4AD bands from the early 90s? Some great, haunting stuff there. This Mortal Coil, Xymox, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins... beautiful backgrounds for spooky stuff.

There seems to be a very major change to the actual posting...Anyway, I wanted to copy something today - and - it won't copy anything any more!!

Yeah, I noticed that too. I can't highlight any text from the board and copy it unless I do Reply and then highlight and copy it from the buffer.

I can highlight and copy the text using Netscape at work, but it's a moot point since Netscape at work won't allow me to post to the forum. All I get for a message field is a little square that doesn't allow any type to be input.
