Testing. 1, 2, 3... / Re: Computer question re: Windows SP2
« on: February 01, 2005, 01:55:44 AM »
I can't say I've had a single problem with SP2. It downloaded fine (with firewall and AV on), and I haven't experienced any unusual issues with my machine. That may be due in part to the fact that the machine was quite new when SP2 loaded (I got it in May of last year). I still refuse to use IE, however, except for when I need to access the Microsoft site. Firefox is not invulnerable, but it sure is a damn sight more secure than IE; I've got AdAware and Spybot, and in the last six months, haven't found a single instance of ad/spyware on this machine.

This is a good example of where just a hair of common sense is more valuable than a boatload of technology.

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Count Yorga and DS
« on: January 31, 2005, 09:20:45 PM »
I've always enjoyed the Count Yorga movies, the second perhaps moreso than the first (probably because I saw it first at the theater when I was a kid). They're alternately quite scary and funny as hell, occasionally falling into the realm of parody while mostly playing it straight. I really like Quarry as Count Yorga; his portrayal of the character is quite Barnabas-ish at times, and at times he really exudes menace. His own teeth -- lots of very sharp ones -- are pretty scary looking, like they would do major damage. The secondary vampires do have fangs that really are a bit over the top. ;)

Good lord; no one will ever be able to touch Darren McGavin. He was one-of-a-kind, and his chemistry with Simon Oakland was priceless. If it's gotta be done, somebody like Greg Kinnear might pull it off...

Wow. I've got complete versions of both, which I recorded from TCM a few years back. I keep those tapes well-protected...

Oh yeah? Well, don't make me tell you what happens if you look in a mirror and say my name three times -- at midnight.  ;D

(So far, people report absolutely nothing, but you never know when an odd coincidence may convince one that I have truly magical powers.)

I haven't seen Galactica 1980 since...well...1980, and thanks to your screen shots, I have that same strange urge to projectile vomit that I did when it first aired. Judas priest, what a god-awful mess.

OTOH, the new Galactica is incredible. Wonderfully written, beautiful to look at, and well-acted. I'm actually happy to put myself in front of a television for the first time in quite a while.

Well, I've been plopping down to watch Lost lately, too. It's not bad. Not bad at all.

Problem with the floating mistletoe is that when I see something floating along so tantalizingly, my immediate instinct is to go for the shotgun, which can have a detrimental effect on computer screens.

I imagine the price tag on this will be somewhat hefty. I'd better put my wallet on a diet to get it in shape for the event. [santa_cheesy]

Personally, I'd think they oughta just have a character named Horace Mattxavier Gilderfletch van Odertrout.

« on: December 04, 2004, 05:07:41 AM »
Note that this patch is for Windows machines not running SP2, which does not appear to be vulnerable to the bug. So if you're already running SP2, the fix isn't required.

I tell you, though, I'm so pleased with Firefox, I have no reason to ever use IE -- except when I need to update something from Microsoft!

I can empathize, Connie. Of course, there's bored, and then there's burnout.

Not long after completing Dreams of the Dark, when the whole creative joy of writing DS was overwhelmed by the business headaches (and these were Excedrin #10 headaches), I came depressingly close to burning out. Since that time, I've yet to be able to get back into DS with the same zeal I had prior to doing the book. I haven't completely separated myself from DS by any means, but I knew some time back that, if I didn't want to get hopelessly burned out, I needed to separate myself from regular viewing, in-depth discussion, etc. To be honest, little depresses me more than the idea of losing enthusiasm for a program that was, quite literally, for almost all my life, a bit of pure magic. So I've taken something of a sabbatical from DS fandom over the last few years -- but this has allowed me to retain a spark -- perhaps more than a spark -- of fannish love for the show. I still enjoy this forum as much as any; even though I don't post much, I read most of the topics.

Some of my old love came rushing back in 2002, when I wrote The Labyrinth of Souls -- which many of you were kind enough to read and remark upon. This was something that a professional writer really should not do: spend considerable time and creative energy writing a novel that results in zero financial remuneration or mass-market exposure. Yet I was compelled to do it, and while I did, every bit of my old enthusiasm returned with a vengeance -- and this time, I was able to write DS as I truly wanted to, without compromise and without the reins of the powers that be holding me back.

I suspect, Connie -- and the rest of you who have felt "bored" -- you are simply hitting one of those cyclicle ebb points that come with being a fan of anything. Sometimes the old joy will come back, and catch you up in it; sometimes it won't; and at this point, so many years after the show, I sometimes think that the real peaks we used to feel have passed on permanently... or at least been downgraded. But you know what... in the last few weeks, when I've been on some of my long walks in the woods or through the old neighborhood where I grew up... for the first time in at least a couple of years, the DS theme is again running through my mind, and my imagination is dominated by the characters and stories that originally drew me to the show way back when. It's a great feeling, and I expect it'll come back to you too.

Wait for it happily. ;)

Hawkes' Harbor is on my Xmas wish list. Especially with the many divergent opinions I've seen of it, I'm looking forward to reading it for myself.

If I get the main things on my list -- the extended edition of Return of the King, the Star Wars DVD trilogy, and Hawkes' Harbor, I guess that will mean I've been REALLY good this year.

Hm, something tells me I'm liable to get a rock.
