This is probably one of the most soap opera oriented episodes since the early days. Samantha plays Torn Between Two Lovers and picks Gerard, who seems less than thrilled.
There's a scene between Quentin and Samantha where we learn that they have had a troubled marriage and Samantha wants out. The whole scene seems to revisit the Roger/Laura/Burke triangle of days gone by. Problem here is that we are given too much information all at once and it's difficult to absorb it all. Plus there's really no run to root for. And, as with David, there are questions raised about Tad's paternity.
There's also reference made to Quentin's earlier affair with another woman. The woman is not mentioned by name. Yet.
The last act finds the unfortunate governess Hortense who having just been fired by Quentin walking through the woods where she finds what isn't a bundle of leaves but headless body. It attacks the poor lady and, well, she no longer need worry about future employment.
The last scenes are in stark contrast to the tone of the rest of the episode and, for me, the juxtaposition does not work.
