Messages - The Doctor and K9

I recieved mine on Monday.  A friend in Louisville KY has his and another in PA got his Monday too.  Big Finish is very prompt with sending out prodcuct.  I've bought Doctor Who, Bernice Summerfield, Sarah Jane Smith, 2000 AD (Judge Dredd), and misc other titles.  Usually they arrive very promptly.  Occasionally the mail between here and the UK can get dodgy.  I had one package quite a while to get here.  I wrote before it arrived, asking if it had been sent  They said yes, but also  sent me a replacement.  I got the replacement first and two days later the original arrived!  They told me to keep both.  Since then, I've learned to give the international mail time to get here.  It can vary from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Current Talk '07 I / The Christmas Presence
« on: February 06, 2007, 02:22:24 AM »
The third Big Finish audio drama was well worth the wait.  The story picks up where the second left off, with tensions within our favorite dysfunctional family.  They've decided to put aside their differences to celebrate the holidays together.  The actors stepped back into their roles as if only a few years had passed between the original show and its new incarnation.  Newcomer Andrew Collins has settled in nicely, improving with every story.  A new visitor arrives, skillfully played by the talented Toby Longworth.  Mr. Longworth may be familiar to fans of the Judge Dredd audio series (also available from Big Finish).  He's quite frankly, a master of voices.  In fact, on the last CD of the Dredd series, he played all the parts!  His talents are a welcome addition to the DS cast.

The story moves quickly, without neglecting to give us ample interaction between the characters.  Lara Parker and John Karlen are particularly entertaining as Angelique taunts Willie.  I won't say too much about the spectral presence that menaces them.  I'm trying to review this story without resorting to those spoiler shades.  I'll just say that the use of Chrstmas carols as the spirits haunt the denizens of Collinwood is very chilling and effective.

I've decided to wait until tomorrow to hear "The Rage Beneath".  I'd vowed to serialize the rest of the series over the next six days, but I consumed "The Christmas Presence" in one greedy gulp.  Oh well, Christmas is a time for indulgence.  So is the New Year.  I'll trade in the karma I've collected not being tdrunk on the 31st by treating myself to the whole tale tomorrow.

If you've not gotten these stories, YOU ARE MISSING OUT!

I've been hoping for a soundtrack release and a behind the scenes look, or listen, rather.  It's a nice bonus that we get two for the price of one!  Thanks for bringing the original DS back.

I missed the voting, but I'd have voted for David Selby, because he missed the latter part of the story due to his sugery.  If he'd been well enough, I think it would have been nice for him to be included.  I have to admit, though, aside from that reason, Frid, Moltke, Bennett, Edmonds, or Barrett would really have made more sense.  Selby would have sequed the show into the second movie though.  I doubt they'd have gotten anyone who wasn't in the episode though.  They were already paying an army of people, compared with the cast they usually had in an episode.

Check out the artwork for "The Rage Beneath"!  As of this moment, it's not on the American site, but you can see what they have on the main site for Big Finish  http://doctorwho.co.uk/darkshadows/ds104_ragebeneath.shtml   I think this is a good time to be a DS fan!!

I would like to speculate about future releases.  In the first scene of "The House of Despair"
spoiler-y we encounter a mysterious stranger who seems to know quite a bit about Collinsport.  Quentin also hear's that voice in his head, declaring "vengeance draws near".  Who do you think this mysterious stranger is?  Is he some new character or someone alluded to in the series?  I wonderered if he might be Count Petofi, in a new body.  Judah Zachary also comes to mind.
Any ideas?

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out some of the controls here.  In my last post, I basically quoted myself.  I was trying to fix a problem I had with a previous post.  I clicked the "reply modify" button.  I wanted to make the word FANTASTIC bold and italicized.  Instead, I quoted myself.  In the previous post I tried to qote another poster, but did not get the quote box around it.

On another related topic, I've avoided posting about plot issues because I have not figrued out how to get that spoiler box around plot details.  Any help would be appreciated.

I apologize for any annoyance with regard to the duplicate posting.

And in other areas, I don't really care that the CDs are going to be late. Would I have liked to be informed? Sure. But I'm not pist about it. After all, at least it was mentioned HERE, rather than NOT AT ALL. So kudos to the person who originally brought up the CDs being late.

My sentiments exactly.  The best Christmas present I could get from Big Fiinish is the annoumcement that the series will continue.  That's more important to me than having my CDs on time.  Look at it this way, the post holidays are always a bit of a let down.  This is something to look forward to.

Rest assured that Big Finish is commited to Dark Shadows and I can confirm that, based on the sales of the initial CDs, the company will be producing a second series of four plays, which will be released from Summer 2007.

To quote a certain Time Lord...FANTASTIC!!!!

I hope you don't mind that your post was merged into this thread.  But readers can now use the link in the main topic on p. 1 for even better results.   [santa_smiley]

No, I don't mind.   I think it's more appropriate here.  Thank!

Christmas, at least the Dark Shadows portion, was saved this year!  The disappointing delay of "The Christmas Presence", I have to admit, sort of put a pall on the holiday (ALBEIT A MINOR ONE).  Unexpectedly, I came across Stephen Mark Rainey's email address and decided to write him to tell him how much I enjoyed Dreams of the DarK.  He wrote back, about five minutes later with a link to download his SECOND DS novel The Labyrinth of Soulls!??  I've not been actively involved in DS fandom, or any other, in the past few years, but I can't believe that this passed me by!  I was also pleasantly surprised to find that it's set at Christmas time.  So if any of you need a DS fix to get you through the holidays, here's the link.  http://users.adelphia.net/~bbrainey/Labyrinth.pdf
I'm aware that most of you probably have this book already, but if even one person gets to read it because of this post, then it was worth it.

Charles,
I understand your frustration.  From what I've observed of you at the DS fests, you are a knowledgable and dedicated fan of DS.  Perhaps the announcement could have been handled better, but in the end, does it matter?  Ok, so we get our Chrismas CD a bit late.  So what?  I'm more concerned about the future of these releases.  I think we need to stand behind Big Finish and thank them for doing something no one else has done, return the original cast to their roles in a continuing series!   I'm just hoping that there's not some problem that jeopardizes future stories.

I really think that there must be a valid reason for the delay.  I am very disappointed, of course, but Big Finish has always been a reputable company.  I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Evan, I'd wait a while and get them cheaper from Amazon.  I'm SURE they'll eventually be available through other retailers besides MPI.  Don't give in to their scam of forcing you to join their stupid club to get them.  ;)

I don't think it's such a bad deal, if you are buying the whole package.  On Amazon, individual sets sell for about $44.99 (if memory serves correctly)  That's the price you get if you pre-order.  I believe it goes up if you wait a while.  MPI is selling them for $54.98, significantly more than Amazon, per unit.  If you figure the cost of all six though, Amazon would cost you about $270.  MPI is selling all 6 for the price of 5, which comes to about $275.  Both outfits ship the packages free.  MPI also gives some freebies for buying.  The main reason I'm ordering from them is that I don't want to take a chance that they may not be available long after MPI releases them.  I know it's a longshot, but I"m going for the sure thing.

Current Talk '06 II / Observations from a Native Newporter
« on: November 08, 2006, 08:30:07 PM »
I grew up in Newport RI.  My high school was a mile or so from Seaview Terrace, the mansion that was used as Collinwood.  Locally, it's known more commonly as "Carey Mansion".  Something occurred to me when I went home this summer.  Art Wallaces original bible for the show named the heroine Sheila.  That name was later, of course, changed to Victoria.  If you are driving towards Seaview, on Ruggles Avenue, you will come to a Victoria Avenue.  It never dawned upon me to wonder if this is where they got the idea to change the name of their ingenue.

Another place I took for granted was a dive called "The Trawler".  It's been gutted, remodeled, and sold since the '80s.  Back then, it looked amaziningly like "The Blue Whale".  In fact, the person who took me there the first time, did so because he was struck by the resemblance when he saw the TV show.  Again, could this have been the genesis of the design for the set?  I suppose it could be a coincidence, but the layout and the decor were a fairly close match.  The main difference was the placement of the door.  The Blue Whale entrance faces the bar and has a railing.  One entered The Trawler by a door that led you in with the bar on your left.

Another bit of trivia, Joanna Going,  of the '91 series, graduated from Rogers High Schoo, in 1981.  Although she was born in Washington DC, she spent most of her school days in the Newport School District.  It certainly was a shock to me when I'd heard she'd been cast as Victoria. While we were not close friends, we'd been in at least 3 classes together, including a drama class, senior year.
