Current Talk '10 I / Re: Quentin VS Barnabas in the Love DEPT
« on: January 16, 2010, 04:23:11 PM »
It's sort of like the conundrum we had as kids with Ginger and Maryann from Gilligan's Island. I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. Now, I'd want to be married to Maryann. If I were single and not looking, or just out of a divorce, I'd seek out Ginger.  We had a similar argument about Farrah and Kate when when we graduated from Gilligan to Charlie's Angels. Ironically I was watching DS, essentially for the first time. I was 6 in '69, so DS was forbidden. Beyond a few stolen scenes, I have little memory of it. In the 70s I was watching DS in reruns and Angels and was totally unaware that "the lady from the Rookies" had been on DS. Again, I think unconsciously we saw Kate as more marriage material, and Farrah as someone to have a more casual fling with. We thought Jaclyn (Sp? Smith was very pretty of course, but she did not really factor into our fantasies. I have no idea why. To relate this to the post, I'd say Barnabas is would be more stable and long term, at least if he solved the whole you'll probably die if you fall in love with me problem. Quentin would be Ginger to Barnabas' Maryann.

I don't know for sure about the series referred to in that link, but I downloaded a "bunch of "radio shows" called Dark Shadows from a torrent site. They weren't radio shows at all; I downloaded audio tracks from the early Barnabas shows. There were 32 in the torrent. They maybe what this dealer is sellling. Again, I don't know this for certain.

I saw that! It loooks like a classic grudge match, and the art looks fantastic!  It gives me something to look forward to after the holidays.

Calendar Events / Announcements '09 II / Re: The Blue Whale Pub
« on: November 28, 2009, 04:11:42 PM »
When I was in college we used to go to a pub called "The Trawler".  I went to URI in Kingston but grew up in Newport.  The Trawler was on Broadway almost at the point where it leads into Washington Square. The interior looked almost exactly like the Blue Whale. In fact, my best friend Jim was in there and told me I had to go there for that reason. He was a DS fan too.  As I recall, the only major difference was the entrance. At the Blue Whale you have those windows that supposedly face the water. off to the left is the entrance.  The Trawler had its entrance right next to the windows. There were also restrooms at the side of the pub directly across from the windows.  The walls were decorated with lobster pots, various English looking painted signs, one of them bore a red lion.  The style was not at all dissimilar to the Blue Whale sign. I feel confident that the people from the show saw that pub. Unfortunately it is now a restaurant and is unrecognizable.  I wish I'd taken pictures now.  I tried to once but the owner told me that he didn't allow it.  This was most definately NOT a tourist hangout.  It was not as rough as the infamous On Deck Saloon just up the road, but people there apparently did not like the idea of being in someone's pictures.

Another thing I've always suspected regards the origin of the name Victoria Winters.  Sheila was to be the name of the character.  Seaview Terrace, or Carey Mansion as the locals generally called it, is on Ruggles Ave.  Just before you that you cross Victoria.  While scouting did someone tell them that Ruggles was right after Victoria?  We'll probably never know. It would be interesting if we could establish a timeline and see if the name change corresponded with the scouting or photography sessions at the mansion.

I think you might also have a problem clearing rights to use clips from other works.  If for exampley, you wanted to do a Lara DVD and use clips from Night Stalker and Race with the Devil, I'm pretty sure a royallty would have to be paid.  I'm sure it could be done, but it would drive the pirce up.

Varney the Vampyre or the Feast of Blood was a penny dreadful in the 1800s, a serialized story that presented the trials of the Bannerworth family.  Varney seems to be villainous at first, but turns out to be quite sympathetic.

Curse of the Vampire is mainly 1795 but ithe last portion has scenes from Frid's first couple of episodes.

When I was in college I watched Ryan's Hope, All My Children, and General Hospital.  I kept with them for a time, but when I met my wife I jettisoned them all except the one we'd watch together, All My Children.  We kept with that one for about 9 years.  When we were expecting our daughter, that was one of the things we gave up.  Following it took too much time, and the plots were becoming monotonous any way.  A few years ago, I got nostalgic and tuned in again.  It was like no time had passed.  Jackson and Erica were in that love hate thing AGAIN.  Adam was up to some tricks with some younger woman AGAIN.  I'm not sure if he was married to Dixie.  Palmer was still up to the same tricks.  Mateo was now controlling his family the way his father did.  I was not interested.  Given a chance, I'd love to see repeats of whatever they have available.  Anybody know how much of AMC exists?

Actually that price is still pretty close on Amazon.  I got them for $13.99 as a pre-release guarantee. They've gone up to $14.99.  The shipping would still be free if someone ordered them, at least I think Amazon still ships free if your order totals  $25 or more.  They don't normally charge tax on most items.  So, if someone wanted them, they could have both tax and shipping free for $29.99.  I'm not trying to hock them. I hardly consider them MUST HAVE items.  I save that status for the Big Finish CDs.

You are fortunate to have such generous and thoughtful friends.  They must care about you a great deal to go out of their way to locate items like these.  I hope you enjoy them.

The interviews are short, but interesting  I bought them for three reasons.
1. I wanted to have some self contained DS to show people when they come over.
2. Amazon had them for about $5 off, free shipping (Amazon Prime) and no sales tax
3. My Amazon card sent me a $25 voucher, so it was the right price at the right time.
4. I admit it. I'm pathetic when it comes to DS.  I knew I was going to get them sooner or later.

One thing I found annoying on the 1795 one was the sound quality at some points. The tapes must be getting old.  Still that's no excuse.  I don't recall those audio problems on the DVDs.
