Calendar Events / Announcements '10 II / Re: Fest Reports

Yes, thank you! I hope someone recorded this panel. I'd be interested to hear what the new Barnabas and Mrs. Griffin have to say first hand!

I remember once at a con I was talking to the guy who did the early Galactica comics for Marvel. I wanted to know why the characters did not look like the people on the show (actors). He said Marvel did not have likeness rights to the actors. They had to draw the characters without making them look exactly like the actors. I wonder if the company has the rights to the likenesses of Frid and Selby, but not the others. Quentin and Barnabas look like Frid and Selby, the rest are identifiable as characters...mostly, but not dead ringers for the actors.

Could it be David??

I'm afraid I think that's supposed to be Julia....

This is slightly off topic, but since it's about DS related music, I don't think it's too out of place here as a quick aside.  Whether you listen to the Big Finish CDs or not, the soundtrack to the dramatic readings series has been released.  Many of the pieces use origial DS themes as their basis and expand upon them.  One piece from Skinwalkers is a reinterpreted version of Quentin's Theme.

I've listened to Kingdom of the Dead twice and love it!  I was planning to listen once while on vacation in Newport. It was great to walk around cliffwalk, and Ruggles Avenue.  I was going to wait and listen to it again with my daughter, on the drive back to Texas. but plans fell through one day.  A friend I was planning to spend the day with had been called in to work, and of course my family were all working, so I decided to walk along part of Ocean Drive and listened to it again.

Some pleasant surprises included
finding out that David had been brought back into the fold.
David Warner was fantastic as Seraph, chilling, yet mulit-dimensional and human.
Trask was also more complex; menacing and yet at times pitiable. I HATE cliffhangers, but as this one goes, it's not too bad. The main story ended and things seemed wrapped up. Then we get the revelation that David and Carolyn are entranced by the hand of Count Petofi. It's more in the tradition of Lost in Space than the typical season cliffhanger that leaves a long running story unresolved. the next series will be out next year.
I wholeheartedly recommend this to any DS fan.

Current Talk '24 I / Re: hoDS/NoDS DVD Release?

I think Denise Nickerson did have a cameo in HODS that was cut. If I remember correctly, she alluded to that in an interview on a PA talk radio special called Collinsport Revisited. I can check that when I get home, but I'm fairly certain that's what she said.

I would certainaly buy both movies on DVD, but I'm actually rather lukewarm about a generic movie only packaging bereft of special features or restoration. If I want to see those films now, I can choose between my SP DVD copy of a laser disk or my SP copy from Dish Network of the uncut TCM airings. Both of these may not live up to the standards of commercial DVD, but the quality is fantastic and they look superb on my flat screen TV. I saw a sample of the download that's currently being offered, and after a cursory view, it seemed fine as an alternative in the meantime, until the DVDs are out.  I'd rest easily if I knew FOR SURE that NODS would be restored and released in five years or when the Depp movie came out, whichever came first. As for HODS, I'd hope they'd do some sort of commentary with some of the actors and/or production people. A rush job to get the movies, a la carte onto DVD is not something I'm dying for.

I can't speak at all to the aspect ratio, other than that it wasn't what I would call the widest of widescreens, but I assume this is the way the movie was filmed.

Do you remember if you could see the nurse when Julia addresses her? For years I though Dan Curtis was too cheap to pay Terrayne Crawford that day and just had Julia address her offscreen. This was  years before I learned about cropping of films for TV. Later I realized you can see Terrayne in the mirror that's in the room, if you look carefully. Of course you do see her when she has her only line, "I've got the blood here doctor". There's an earlier scene where Julia calls her Miss Shepherd (Sp?) and is seemingly talking to mid-air.

I don't recall exactly how accurate they were. I found them very informative at the time. Keep in mind, when many of the DS zines were written, many of the episodes were not out on video. Some times editors had to rely on audio tapes, notes, or even faulty memory to piece together much of the information. By 1986 3 years of DS syndication was out. The rest of it was not released until the '90s. Any errors you might find, could be attributed to the lack of availability to the episodes.

Current Talk '10 I / Re: Humbert Allen Astredo Interviews

I was saddened to hear about the death of Mr. Astredo's daughter, Jennifer. In a weird coincidence I just bought the Shadowcon III Memory Book on EBay. It had numerous pictures of her at the event with her father.  It made her seem more real to me. they seemed to be having a good time.

I also remember a day when my father was home sick.  I got home from school and for some obscure reason. He had DS on. It was the episode in which Liz is menaced by disembodied spirit hands. I had no idea who Quentin was then. It didn't scare me while it was on, but later that night I was pretty nervous. As with the werewolf incident, this scene is longer in my memory.

I'm tentatively planning to go to next year's fest as well. I'm working on earning a free round trip ticket on my Amazon card. The only possible rub, aside from financial disasters would be our annual trip to Newport, RI. I have such trouble scheduling a time share there. This year, we are there the same week as the Festival (check in the 16th, check out the 23rd).  My parents are not in the best health so I hate to miss a year. We drive from TX to RI, so that takes the better part of a month with side trips and travel. The 2008 Fest was a lot of fun; the 45th anniversary seems a fitting time to go again.

I was not allowed to watch, but I would occasionally sneak a peak. My parents weren't overly protective. I was only 6 in 1969. I was allowed to watch it in 1976, when I was 13.  I remember being terrified when they chained "Quentin" (that's how I incorrectly remember it) to the wall of a dungeon and he changed. He thrashed around for some time with these very loud snarls (incorrect again, the scene is brief). That scene haunted me for a long time.  I also got scared by the Lost in Space episode where Doctor Smith let out all the zoo animals (2 parter with Michael Rennie of Day the Earth Stood Still fame).

Yeah, this ran in a 3 hour timeslot.  I don't know what they did to fill the last of the hour. I made a comment about how I felt llike the show would never end....I did not mean to imply that I felt it was over long. We were planning to go to a party and I told my wfie I was not leaving until it was over. She kept coming in and asking if it was over yet. I had DVR'd it and was not sure exactly how long it had left, but I kept telling her the party would run until well after dark and I was in no rush to head over and sit in the hot Texas sun. Any way that's why I made the comment. I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to save it on DVD.
