I checked my hometown, Newport, RI. It's playing through Thursday as well and then seems to be leaving. The situation is the same for the Providence area.  I'm using the search engine from the official site.  Maybe they don't have listings for Friday on yet.  The info regarding the S. TX locations came from a bored manager who was all tot happy to give me info on the local and Corpus theaters.

DS leaves the McAllen-Brownsville TX area on Thursday night.  Corpus has it playing once daily next week (150 miles from me).  I might try to catch it once more on Thusday.  I saw it today for the $5.00 Bargain Tuesday special.  6th time!

DS is leaving our theater tomorrow.  It'll still be in a larger town 16 miles away.  We have 10 screens; McAllen has 17.

I went to 1:50 showing yesterday that was about 50% full at least.  I was pleasantly surprised.

If Depp wants to do a sequel, it'll get done with or without Burton. If Depp does not want to do a sequel, one won't get done. That's my take anyway.

So how much does DS need to make to break even?  I heard somewhere that it was twice it's budget. Is that true?  Does it need to make 300 million?  Imdb lists the budget at 150 million.  Is that accurate?  That figure seems an unlikely target for it to hit.

I went to see DS on the IMAX and my impressions are much more positive. I don't think it was the IMAX experience. Yes, it intensified some of the more dramatic scenes and made them seem almost 3D, but that would not be enough to grant salvation to a movie that's without substance. I went with 2 friends, Ron and Sonja. Ron has almost no exposure to the original DS except for the 4 hour condensation of the Maggie story I showed him. He's seen HODS a few times and watched '91 DS. Sonja watched the original but has few memories of it. They both liked it.  Ron MIGHT buy it on DVD.

I found that I still was annoyed by the "humor" that seemed to pop up at inappropriate moments. That scene of him brushing his teeth, the one that irked me every time I saw it in the trailers, does not bother me much now. It was not in a dramatic place in the film. The montage shows him settling into 20th Century life, so he's broadening his horizons. I wish the scene of him on fire had not broken the tension of his "coming out" to the family. But all in all, I enjoyed it much more the second time around. I still think the sex and vomit scenes were stupid, but I ignore them, grateful that these characters were brought to life at all. After the failure of '91 and the pilot, Burton and Depp might have been the only people who could make this happen. I just hope they do an extended cut. I think that will transform this film the way Star Trek the Motion Picture was when it ran on ABC and was out on VHS. If they don't do the extended cut, I may do my own edit.  I've done this before. I took most of the deleted scenes from Godfather's I and II (I omitted one scene because it was very inconsequential and was the only one that was only available to me on a medicare VHS recording) and edited them into my "Ultimate Cuts". I'll do that with DS if these scenes are available but relegated to a special features section. Once that's done, it'll be fairly simple to save "the Ultimate Cut" and then make a second edit, softening the blow of some of the more silly scenes. It'll be an experiment I'll inflict on people LOL. Sometimes I have WAY too much time on my hands!!!

I'm wondering why there appears to be a preoccupation here with commercial success of the movie.
In my case, I want it to be a commercial success so that it will fuel other projects. For example, the restoration of NODS could hinge on whether or not this film gives the project enough positive name recognition. I'd also like to see a sequel.

I have high hopes for Japan. If it does well there, who knows? Can you say Anime series boys and girls?  Manga books?  It's not a probability, but it seems like a reasonable hope.

It is the best of the professional DS novels. Dreams of the Dark is a close second. It's a shame it was never published!

My guess is that the delay is a temporary one. They had some problems with downloads when they switched over to their new website. I think there're probably some growing pains there. I expect it will be fixed soon and probably glitch free by next month.

i'm not sure what this means but i just came from seeing it a second time...

a funny 6 o'clock showing near where i work with only about 15 people in the theater.

still processing.
I wouldn't read too much into a dead Monday showing at that hour. When a new movie comes out, I usually see it between 4 and 6 on the first Friday. It's usually much slower than the other offerings. People are leaving work, having dinner, etc. It's not a good sign, but I'd not read a lot of dire forbodings into it either. I think next weekend will be telling.
