Messages - The Doctor and K9

I think it's a piece from a Count Orlock figure from Nosferatu. He's also known in some of the English prints and in the remake as Dracula.

I've become fairly certain that DS was "canceled" because Dan Curtis privately told somebody high up at the network that the show needed to end. The fact that the taping of the final episode occurred just a few days before filming on NoDS began was the first clue that DC was mostly likely involved in the "cancellation."

G.

I'd heard from a few people that Dan Curtis told someone off at a meeting and got cancelled soon after. Supposedly they were expressing concerns about Bennett leaving and Frid playing another character. I think I recall that they also had some "suggestions" about where the show should go and so he told that guy where to go. How true this is, I don't know. It was something I heard about from a few people who had been in fandom for some time longer than I had been.

My first book Was The Mystery of Collinwood followed by Barnabas, Quentin, and the Body Snatchers. This was 1976 and my best friend found a bunch of the books on his mom's shelf. Channel 56 out of Boston was running the show late night. I started watching when my mother would let me stay up on Friday nights.

Living in Newport, we heard the show had been filmed there. We had no idea where the house was. A guy told Jim where it was. Based on a picture from a Gold Key comic, he directed us to THE WRONG HOUSE on Ocean Drive. I'd only seen the show a couple of times and the picture was so snowy. We took photos of some random house and thought that was Collinwood for a few weeks. To be fair, it did look a bit like the house as drawn in the issue of the comic that featured an owl on the cover, #28.

For some reason, this book arrived before Barnabas Collins Vs. the Warlock. This is odd, because I got a notice from Amazon that book 11 was supposed to arrive on Friday or Saturday of last week.

I've been listening to them all. I'm not sure if I'm imagining it, but KLS seems to be putting a bit more gusto into The Phantom and Barnabas Collins. That book is the first of 3 to feature Maggie as the heroine. I'm only on Chapter One, but it seemed to me that she was a bit more inspired by that novel.

I'm enjoying the books for what they are, pulp quality reinterpretations of DS. They are nostalgic, since the books essentially were my first real introduction to DS. I'd stolen a few glimpses of some isolated scenes in the '60s, but I had no meaningful exposure to the series.

I live 6 miles from the Mexican border and lucked into a few of those lobby cards at a "Ropa Usada" (used clothing store). They often sell various other items along with the clothes, including used books, magazines, and on that occasion, some posters. I could not believe my eyes. They were 50 cents each. The rest of the items were for Mexican movies.

I forgot to mention that PT Quentin and Gabriel had TWO totally different parents. Flora is their mother in PT as opposed to having one son in the "real timeline,' Desmond. "Our" Quentin and Gabriel had Daniel's late wife Harriet as their mom. So again, it made no sense that the two pairs would be parallels of each other. I do concede that they always reused the same actors in every story, but in this case you had the same two guys playing the same brothers with the same names. It seems to contradict the "rules" implied by the 1970 storyline.

I'm watching the E N D of DS.

Episode 1230...what the hell is the matter the camera/lights?

Shoot to Julia, purple/green, to Quentin, normal, fleshtone, then to Catherine, back to Quentin, normal.

They I believe were using 2 different cameras...was one of the cameramen on LSD?

NEXT....just started watching Ep 1231......GGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Why would Brutus Collins be at Collinwood when it did not exist for more than 100 years!?!?

Thanks for letting me vent,

Patti
When I was in college, I bought quite a few DS audio tapes. 1841PT always intrigued me. I wanted to hear Frid and Parker in new roles for a change. I loved the story, but the PT concept really bugged me. It seemed to make some sense in 1970. The choices we make in this "time band" might be different from those in another, and so different versions of ourselves existed. I assumed that '70 Quentin was the grandson of PT 1897 Quentin. You had different versions of the family, but they were also familiar and it made sense if you viewed them as people who led different lives.

Then you get to 1841. Why is there a Julia? She's not the counterpart of Dr. Hoffman. There was no Julia in the family. Why was Justin the head of the family? Shouldn't it have been Daniel? Shouldn't Justin's descendants look entirely different? Is it fated that there will be a Quentin and Gabriel, even if they have a different father?

The history of Collinwood and perhaps even Collinsport seems to be totally different. The house is much older. How far back does the Old House go? Why does the family resemble the one we saw in the 1840 story if their pasts are so different.

It made no senses, so I went with the flow. I enjoyed the story very much. Morgan seems much more powerful and charismatic as a disembodied radio voice. The fact that my tapes from that period high quality compared to much of the rest of the episodes also helped. The 1897 shows were recorded mostly by putting a mike to the speaker. Annoying hiss and other background sounds marred the quality. The later tapes were almost certainly recorded by splicing the input wires to the speaker to get a direct, high quality sound. Other background noises were totally absent. They were almost as good as the ones I had on VHS or DVD.

I hope you enjoy the rest of the story.

Oh with regard to the cameras, I think there were times when one of them was on the fritz. I seem to recall a time in 1897 where we were getting similar glitches. I guess it was a consequence of the minuscule budget.

David Hurst, who played Justin Collins and numerous theatre, film and other TV roles, passed away on September 15 in Berlin, where he has lived since 2000.  He was 93.

with thanks to Kosmo
He's one of the only people to appear on both the original Star Trek and Dark Shadows. I'm trying to remember if there was anyone else.Philip R. Allen was a cop in a DS episode and Captain Esteban Star Trek III, so he appeared in a  movie with most of the original series cast. He was also in Washington Behind Closed Doors with David Selby, Lara Parker, and Thayer David.

I can't say that she was my favorite actress on the show but she was certainly one of my favorites at the festivals.  [carv_pump] [tricktreater] [carv_pump]
Agreed. She was extremely warm and nice.

OK, I finally got to see it. Thank you for providing the link! It's nice to have a digital copy of it.

Your link was blocked, probably by the system here at my workplace. I assume it's referring to the DS crossover with Kolchak. I forget which came first, but there was a short story and a comic. I was disappointed to find that they were both about the same story. Surely they could have come up with two good ideas for a  meeting between Carl and Barnabas. They recreated the likenesses extremely well, but because of sloppy research, the sets did not look at all like their TV counterparts. How hard would it have been to google The Old House?

I guess all that rain kept everything green.  Plausible explanation.

Sorry. It rains frequently during the winter in New England. And in all my 60+ years of living here, there has never been one winter season in which the grass has stayed green and the trees have had green leaves.

Try again...  [ghost_wink]
Agreed. I grew up in Newport RI. The only green I saw in the winter was this oasis of spring near the heat vents from a laundromat. There was so much warm air, it never froze and you'd see grass and moss. It was bizarre but kind of fascinating. I'd often warm up there after walking from my house to the shopping center that lay about a quarter of a mile away from the laundry.

We'd have warm spells in the winter and frequent thaws. That's why the roads are so bad. I can recall a few times where it was warm enough to go without a jacket. When I was in college I was able to watch Dark Shadows on one of those freaky warm days. It got into the lower 60s and we were picking up a NY channel on VHF. I wondered if I could get New Jersey Network. Good news YES! Bad news, that day's episode was one of a few I already had on VHS! Damn!  But aside from days like that, winters were never warm enough to keep grass green throughout the winter.

I knew Thayer David appeared in the pilot for the '77-'79 Spiderman TV series (the Sci-Fi Channel ran it several times - including right after DS), but I had no idea he did this record:

Spider-Man Meets Archie and Dark Shadows (sort of) on Records
(Scroll to 'THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Starring in A Rockomic: “FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE”')
Peter/Spidey was played by Rene Auberjonois (Odo-Star Trek DS9, Clayton-Benson, Father Mulcahy-M*A*S*H film). an ac
I'm pretty sure that this was the first time Doctor Strange was portrayed by an actor in any format. I did some cursory research on this a few years ago, but I can't discount the possibility that the good Doctor didn't make some kind of an appearance on the Marvel carton shows from the 60's.

The idea of a book signed by Alexandra Moltke is very tempting but I'll bet it will be pricey. The comic strip collection signed by Lara Parker is listed on the Hermes site at $95.00 which is way outside my budget for this kind of thing. I wouldn't be overly surprised if the Moltke book is selling for a similar price.
It would be pricey but I MIGHT buy it. Lara's autograph is very easily obtainable. Unless she's discontinued her website since I last checked, a person could buy any numbers of signed items from her at fairly low prices. I have numerous things autographed by her. Alexandra Moltke's signature is much more rare. I'd definitely at least consider buying a DS book signed by her if it was in the neighborhood of $100. I doubt I'd pay much more though.
