I also love both of them.

"Operation Victor" is a Quentin story that is kind of like a comic book in tone. It's set during WWII and involves a mad scientist who has plans for world domination. I found it to be very entertaining. It's hokey in the same way the Adam story was with Nicholas and his plans.

In "Speak No Evil", a carnival comes to town. Tad Collins becomes involved in a plot that's both sad and sadistic. It does not have any familiar DS actors. If you are a Doctor Who fan, the guy who plays Rory is Tad. I had forgotten this and thought he was an American!

"The Last Stop" is a Tony Peterson story about a train that gets detoured. It's chilling.  Lara has a cameo.

"Dreaming of the Water" is a story starring KLS in a dual role and Christopher Pennock as Sebastian Shaw. It attempts to bridge the gap between where we see Sebastion in 1970 and where he windes up in "Return to Collinwood".

I enjoyed them all. The last one is obviously the best for people who are not a fan of the idea of bringing in new actors to the DS universe. I got caught up in the story of "Speak No Evil" and forgot that none of the actors had never been on DS before, but then I always loved fanfic that dealt with filling in the gaps between time periods. These stories often featured new characters and situations.

Current Talk '24 I / Re: hoDS/NoDS DVD Release?

The Tower Room Flashback definately has dialogue that is not in any of my previous versions, bootleg VHS, Pro VHS, VHS dub from Laser Disk, and SP DVDr copy from TCM.
We hear a laugh and Charles saying "more of your dreary moralizing, brother?"
Then we hear Gabriel yell "open the door" and Charles responds with "trying my patience brother." The annoying thing about this added dialogue is the fact that it's not synced with the lip movements.
The scene ends with Angelique repeating her lines about bringing the painting to life as a voice over and we see the portrait. Very strange.

Bermuda is on the same latitude as NC so it will not be all that hot. The forecast for this week calls for rain and temperatures in the 70s.

I was disappointed when I saw HODS. Daphne's nurse was always visible in the mirror, but Julia speaks to her and she's off camera. I thought she had been cropped, but tha twas not the case. Was Curtis saving money? It seems odd.

Are there some extra bits of dialogue in NODS? I was watching with friends and thought I heard some new lines in the Tower Room scene flashback and a repeat of the line "bring the painting to life" after that scene. I have not had time to replay it.

I think the WB are confident DS will sell well on DVD.  I believe they want to sell it twice, theatrical and extended cuts.  This was done most notably with Watchmen.  In that case THREE versions were released: theatrical, director's and ultimate cuts.

Current Talk '12 II / Re: are the big finish dramas canon?
« on: September 23, 2012, 10:55:53 PM »
Everything else, including movie spinoffs starring the same actors who appeared in the original series, is ITS OWN canon, as a spinoff, adaptation, or what have you.

Ok, so let me see if I have this straight.  The Star Trek films are not canon?  Ok.  Spock appears on TNG and references the events of Star Trek VI. I think that makes STVI a part of TNG canon.. Zefram Cochrane is shown in STTNG First Contact. The same actor appears as Zefram in Enterprise. Star Trek novels reference ALL Trek series, sometimes mixing and matching. With Trek at least, the movies and subseuqent TV series are all part of an intricate continuity, even if it's consistent at times.

Now with DS, I consider the audio dramas to be canon. They use the original actors and make an effort not to contradict the original show. That's my opinion. You won't change it. Feel free to waste your time if you wish.

In the end, it's a moot question any way. Who decides what's canon? Do we set up a council and vote? Do we let the Curtis family decide? Do they care? Would we trust their answer? In the end, canon is what we individually decide it is.

With Star Trek, we have Paramount deciding. They have decreed that ALL aired Trek and the movies are canon EXCEPT the animated show. Why it's not, I don't know. We found out there that the Klingons had the cloaking device. We saw the holodeck, or a reasonable facsimile there first. They showed us more of Vulcqan and "Yesteryear" was directly alluded to in "Unification I" (the episode in which Sarek dies and Picard searches for Spock".  We got stories that were at least as good as the average Trek episode and NONE sunk to the depths of "Mark of Gideon" and "Spock's Brain".  That of course is very debatable I hate those episodes. Someone else may love them and hate the animated show. But with Star Trek, we have a body dictating what the comic and book series can use and do and what they can't. The proof that the books and comics are not canon is the fact that they generally wildly contradict each other even though each project is generally consistent with the various series.

Don't try to tell a Whovian that the two Doctor Who series aren't both canonical! Images of all the past Doctors have been shown on the new show.

The reason I consider the CDs to be canon is that they use the original cast. I don't discriminate based on the fact that they are audio. If they were live action TV, I believe they would have wider acceptance. I would consider counting the new comic as well if it stays consistent with what Big Finish is doing.

I never watch '91 DS without reading the Innovation comics. I consider that to be part of the all to short continuity.

David, do you have the DVD, Blu Ray, or combo? If you have the DVD, what special features are on it. I have a number of combo packs and I'm borderline about buying a blu ray player. I have my eye on one and might buy it if the DVD has very few features.

Current Talk '12 II / Re: the witchcraft nonsense in 1840
« on: September 16, 2012, 08:09:56 PM »
Actually, I don't find it totally impossible that an insular, isolated place like Collinsport might give in to witchcraft mania, if it had been done without the knowlege of the outside world. In 1892, Mercy Brown was exhumed and her body difiled in Wakefield, Rhode Island. The town's people thought she was a vampire. A few miles away, the people of Providence were aghast. RI instituted laws about the handling of bodies and requiring post mortems.

Where I part company with 1840 is (and I don't remember if this happened) having a sentence reviewed by a higher court and being upheld. The State of Maine would have sent in the National Guard or whatever.

And as for what's written about the film at the beginning of the post, well, obviously it was written by someone who's completely unaware that there hasn't been any official reporting of the film's international box office since July 8th and the film has pulled in millions since then, particularly in the Latin American countries.
At least they made it clear that DS was not a flop, even with the lower figures on the foreign box office.

Ooops. Sorry about that and thanks to verusselle.

David, I'm amazed at the way you keep on top of the release and ariings of these gems. Thanks!

It might depend upon the local school schedule. Many districts have school on Labor Day. Ours was in session on that "holiday" for many years, even though we have it off this year.
