Current Talk '24 I / Re: Another Sporcle DS Quiz

I got all the "hard" questions right and then made a careless mistake. I was trying to beat the clock and hit Drummond instead of Wells for the desk clerk.

The 1951 film does not have any characters corresponding to Joshua, Aunt Abigail, Trask, Ben et al, but the hero's name is Peter Standish which might have somehow suggested the name of Peter Bradford.

There was a William Bradford and a Miles Standish on the Mayflower.

House Of Dark Shadows Characters Quiz

I thought the quiz is pretty simple. I got 100% (as I'm sure most of us would), and I'm not the biggest fan of the film. But surprising to me, the quiz says the average taker has gotten only 57% correct. They can't be very big DS fans - or they haven't seen the film either in years or perhaps not often enough...

I know of several people who are not DS fans, but they have seen and enjoyed HODS. In the horror film community the film has a fair amount of respect. It's often overlooked, but when it's reviewed or mentioned it's generally favorable. I think those are the people who might be getting those scores.

Of course 57% could just be an average of very high and very low scores.

OH I see. Yes, MP3's are smaller than CD audio files but there's a loss of quality. It's hardly noticeable to most people and usually I can't tell at all. If you have a CD with MP3 files you can get maybe 10 hours or so of high quality audio on one disk. Some people really want the full range of audio and will pay extra to buy multiple disks.

Music is rarely sold this way on CD. Most of the time MP3 disks are spoken word works.

There are definitely two versions of each release. For example Barnabas Collins Vs. the Warlock is available on Amazon in two formats. One is an MP3 CD and one is a CD Audio, multi-CD pack. You can tell because the cheaper one specifies MP3 format. Also the dimensions and weight differ.

I have to confess I haven't shopped around because they don't really interest me, so I was judging by the $19.99 list price. But $6.99 for the MP3 is much better, so thanks for sharing that for people who are interested.  [snow_smiley]

I think the $19.99 price is for the multi CD format. The cheaper price is for a single disk in MP3 format. I am buying them as MP3s. CD audio technically is higher quality, but you won't hear it on a single reader recording. The only music are the opening and closing themes.

Coincidentally, I just found this podcast in which Joanna is interviewed. She talks a bit about her childhood, growing up first in Middletown, RI and moving to Newport when she was 8. She also discusses Seaview and running home from school to watch DS.

The Cowsills were also reputedly from Newport before they were famous, but to be technical, according to Susan they were originally from Middletown. But according to Susan she could and often did walk to Newport from her house. I spoke to her when she did a free concert at Kings Park in Newport a few years ago. I never knew they were actually not technically from Newport.

Here's a link to the interview with Joanna. https://podknife.com/podcasts/tv-guidance-counselor-podcast

I'd check the Shadows on the Wall story bible. Did Art Wallace describe the proposed sets? I don't know where my copy is at the moment. I'll have to see if I can find it.

This is a nice piece, although there are errors. They assumed, wrongly, that Frid's appearance in "The Night Whispers" was the first audio appearance of Barnabas. Andrew Collins was in the first 4 debut CDs.

Also Joanna Going was born in Washington DC, as she said, but she spent most of her life in Newport Rhode Island, graduating from Rogers High School, a mile or so from Seaview "Collinwood" Terrace. I'm pretty sure she she moved there when she was a baby.

It's nice to see the audio series getting positive exposure. Thank you for sharing it.

There wasn't anything new to me there. They also managed to make a few mistakes. After getting the name Barnabas correct almost entirely throughout the article we find in a subheading that "Johnny Depp Became BarnabUs Collins."

They also moved the cast to New York to do the movie. I guess they thought it was produced in LA?

A still from HODS is used to illustrate the section on NODS.

It was fun to read though. Thanks for sharing it.

This one is also available cheaper on Amazon. It's priced the same as #13, $6.99.

Amazon has it listed for $6.99.
They also have the paperback priced at NINE HUNDRED SEVENTY THREE DOLLARS? If you pay that they still tack on 4 bucks for shipping. Who'd be crazy enough to pay that?

Barbara Bouchet is the blond.

Whatever happened to her? Whoever the hell she is. Painfully obvious that she recoiled from Mr. Frid when he attempted a "just for laughs" bite on her. Like he had three heads or something.
Old Man Frid, in any venue, is a pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing.
She's best remembered as Kelinda from Andromeda in the Star Trek episode "By Any Other Name and as Moneypenny in Casino Royale. Apparently she got tired of Hollywood. She's foreign born but grew up in the US. She moved to Europe and has had a long career there. She turned up a time or two in the US at autograph shows and conventions. She's still working according to IMDb. In addition to Trek and the Bond film, she also did episodic TV here before leaving.

Current Talk '24 I / Re: Since when has DS been on TITANTV?!
« on: January 15, 2020, 03:38:15 AM »
I think it's Decades TV. TITANTV seems to be a listings service. If you look at the channel broadcasting DS, it's listed as Wed, Jan 15 - 9:00 PM   /    KFAZ-CD2 8.2    /   DECADES. I did a program search of the database for Dark Shadows and that's what came up.
