Current Talk '24 I / Re: Depp/Burton DARK SHADOWS Is In Release!!
« on: July 06, 2016, 07:47:53 PM »
when i first joined the fandom in the early aughts the 91 revival was the hot button, toxic subject.
I remember a very vocal and significant number of fans protesting the cancellation of the show and campaigning to have it brought back.

I agree with your earlier comments about the Depp film and other versions being totally ignored, except for the '04 pilot. That got screened again at this year's festival.

I said he was a Grayson Hall fan, but looking back on the interview, he doesn't really say that. He compares Grayson to Tom Baker. I think it's probable that he is a fan of the great lady, but I want to make that correction.

He also had a brief supporting part in "The Crimson Pearl" and is writing a short story "Old Acquaintance" which I believe will be read by David Selby.

Here's a link to the Vortex issue in which he's interviewed about DS.  https://www.bigfinish.com/vortex/v/27

He starred in the DS audio dramas "Bloodlust" and "The Creeping Fog." In the interviews for CF he said that he watched DS while  living in LA and was a big fan of Grayson Hall.

I've often wondered how many viewers were lost when they went full tilt into the supernatural on DS. I've never run across anyone who told me that she watched the show in the beginning and dropped it when it became "silly" but I'm sure there must have been a segment of the viewership that did so.

A couple of years ago, I bought a 'Fan Favorite' which I believe have 10 eps.

Does anyone know if the eps I bought will be on the DVD, which I just put my order in?
Based upon past experience with the other re-releases, I would predict that the Fan Favorites DVD will be identical to the version put out a while back, except for the packaging. We saw many of the VHS special tapes included in the final DVD volume. When the coffin set came out, if my memory is correct, there were no added video features and nothing was edited.

I agree it's a pretty lame celebration of the 50th anniversary, BUT for someone who doesn't have it already, the 1795 condensed storyline disk alone is worth the 12 bucks or so Amazon is charging. It's not perfect, but the story is boiled down to about 4 hours or so. The same is done for the "Turn of the Screw" ghost story featuring Quentin. That one ends on a cliffhanger though. That's about the best I can say about this collection.

There was a rumor of a third film, "Death of Dark Shadows" featuring Denise Nickerson. I'm surprised they didn't mention that "Child of Dark Shadows" was a renaming of that project. They could have easily included Denise into their PT DS movie synopsis. Kathy Cody would have been another obvious choice.

Van Helsing is a character from the original novel. He's Dutch if I recall correctly and has a very strong accent. He is very intelligent but English is obviously not his first language. He's commanding and imposing but also elderly. He is not the action figure type and had never encountered Dracula before. He knows a great deal about the undead, but I got the impression it was all from books. He may have encountered other monsters before but I believe it was implied he'd never battled vampires before. It's been a while, and I could be wrong about that.

The Hugh Jackman movie was entertaining but bore little connection to the actual characters or situations as chronicled in the actual novel.

They give 1816 as the date, but it was first published in 1818. It was edited, revised and republished in 1831. I'm unclear about when the first two movies take place. I'd assumed the first one was set in 1931 but in a backwater area. I based that assumption on the technology. The second film seems to indicate that it's set in the late 1800s, as you observed.

Burton threw in A LOT of random subplot that ended up amounting to nothing. between that and the buzz saw editing job it left for a rather disjointed narrative...

for some reason Burton wanted Roger to seem like a complete cad
I wonder if someone, Burton, the writer, or Depp wanted him to be like Roger in '66? Maybe they watched early episodes.

Wasn't Depp-as-Barn's cane handle made from ivory?
I said gold earlier, but I ivory rings a bell. That might be what I was thinking of.

I'd have to check, but I think there was a throw away reference to his cane being gold in the movie.
