This years trip to California is a splurge for me but I started saving a year ago and realize I won't be doing as much outside of the fest due to money but hey, the ocean is still free out there isn't it?? Please tell me it is all you Calif people.

Oh yes, Teresa-- the Pacific Ocean is still free and blue and warm! :)

Now if I may put on my moderator's hat for a moment, I'll ask that we all keep in mind that this topic was intended as an avenue for exchanging ideas and making recommendations about improving the Fest.  We don't have to agree with everything we read here, and discussion of the various ideas is always welcome, yet I can't imagine that newbies would be willing to share their thoughts if they see that posters who have done so are being criticized or attacked for theirs.  And let's also not forget that one of the threads running through these 4 pages has to do with fan behavior, but if we can't get along while simply sharing ideas on an internet message board, how can we make a case that we can all get along in the close quarters of a festival auditorium?

I've removed one message in this topic for its criticism of another poster, and hopefully that'll be the last.

Oh dear, I guess this is what we get for letting those 2 bunnies get near each other, huh? ;)

I'm sure MB will take a look at it.

MB found it was due to an error caused by the server.  As far as I can tell, only the one topic was corrupted.  The original topic is now locked to posting and the discussion can move to the new topic.

BTW, MB, I love the previous and next buttons!

Since I wrote this the buttons have evolved to something even better! :D

Vlad IM'd me when his post didn't show up, so I'm currently moving the hidden posts to another topic.  It's only the one topic that's affected, and I'm sure MB will take a look at it.  While transferring the messages over, I had a feeling I should check this board. ;)

BTW, MB, I love the previous and next buttons!

Did we see TV history?

Not even DS history, apparently.  This is from David Hofstede's review of Volume #4 in the Collector's Series, excerpted from his article in a '97 TWODS:

"In episode two, watch Louis Edmonds' effortless cover of a line misreading, when he says 'a hundred miles' instead of 'a hundred feet.'  He later yells, 'I don't give a damn about proof!', which I didn't think you could say on TV in 1966."

Obviously Hofstede and Gerard were on the same wavelength about the significance of uttering the d word in the 1960s.

How about a comparison to "Burn Witch Burn" with Janet Blair?  It only came out on video in the past year or two, and the "behind ever great man is one HELL of a woman!" on the video box is a hoot.

If you haven't read the 50's book that BWB is based on-- "Conjure Wife" by Fritz Leiber-- it's about what ensues when a professor discovers that his wife is a witch and insists that she clean house (and I don't mean dusting and vacuuming).

Much less wonderful is Hammer's "The Witches" with Joan Fontaine, though it certainly has its moments. ;)

Allen Collins, does your wife remember what scene David Henesy was in?  I saw that ep of the Waltons a while back but completely missed him in it, argh.

joe,

Your message was modified to remove the mention of a serious personal problem that David has described.  I sympathize with him and feel that if he has been negatively targeted in any way that he should pursue appropriate avenues with which to deal with the issue, but I do not feel that posting it on these forums is either productive or appropriate.

DS fandom does seem to have its share of politics.  However, I've never found the majority of fans to be poorly behaved or hateful, and in fact if I've seen these types of behavior at all it was from a small minority of people.  I've met some of the most generous, fun-loving, and friendly people ever through DS venues.

Obviously David has had different experiences and I'm sorry for that and hope that he will eventually find the same level of enjoyment that I've had while attending the last 5 Fests.  While I can't imagine how fan behavior could be regulated, I think his words here are lovely and ring true even beyond fandom:

we can further improve fandom by gently, lovingly urging people to be kinder to each other, to be polite to everyone whose paths they cross and to end the grudgeholding. its time we learned that not being friends does not make us enemies.

I remind my fellow Dark Shadows fans/colleagues of the line from Billy Joel's pertinent song: "You're only human.  You're supposed to make share of mistakes" (like fumbling with a pesky tape recorder).

Aw, BobtB, I've made my share too.  That scene is just what I happen to most remember him for from the series-- I think it's hilarious.

~Mezzanotte ;) (who will soon be lunching with Nicky, yay!)

A man well remembered for his inimitable portrayals as an attorney, a learned judge, and, of course, as the greatest medical doctor  (this side of Dr. Hoffman) who ever put up a shingle in the village of Collinsport, ME.

And for his inability to operate a simple 20th century device that will prove crucial to the continued existence of Barnabas, as well as the hilarious scene in which he feeds the name "Dave Woodard" to Barnabas though for all intents and purposes he should have no idea who the man is much less that Julia should be reminded about his name. ;)

Temperance = Roger (just kidding)

LOL!  May I suggest one of Clarice Blackburn's characters for Temperance, such as Mrs Johnson, Abigail, or Minerva?

I hope you'll be able to pursue the project further.  It sounds very exciting!

It's nice that you've notified their support, so that presumably it will be fixed.  However, I don't know that it needed to be disabled.  It apparently worked most of the time, and even when it didn't, it caught most of the items.

I did find that it worked consistently, but it displayed only one post per thread, so what you were seeing was the last message in each thread that had a new post.  So that's why you saw Minja's replies to Bobubas but not his messages in the listing, yet if you were to load each of those threads you would indeed see all the newest messages (with Bob's right above Minja's in the threads).  However, if it was going to mislead readers by its title ("10 most recent posts") then MB disabled it, and YaBB needs to clarify if this is how it's supposed to work.

As for your observations below, maybe it takes a few minutes before messages show up in the listing?

Quote
When I was here a while ago, the last post was from Ben - Barn and Ben:  a 1795 Highlight at 11:19 p.m. the 17th.

I came back a few minutes ago and checked the last 10 and the only post listed after that was from Midnite on Luciaphil's board at 12:07a.m. the 18th.

However, I checked the Current Discussion board and found some new items.  There was Bobubas at 12:04 a.m and Minja at 12:19 a.m. in the O.T. Message for Unregistered Membes and again Bobubas and Minja at 11:59 p.m. and 12:08 a.m. in the St. Patrick's Day thread.

Before starting to write this, I checked the top 10 again and found that the 2 Minja items had appeared, but the 2 Bobubas ones were still missing.

What, by the way, was with that very lame attempt at an exorcism?  This was all they could come up with--Jerry Lacy, a piece of chalk, Vicki's initials, and a stick.  If it was supposed to be a dowsing rod, I want to know: why you need a dowsing rod for an exorcism; and what idiot found a stick with three branches on it?

Those all seemed like bizarre improvisations.  I've heard of pouring salt along a threshold (though I suppose that would defeat the purpose, since if Vicki was really evil she wouldn't be able to cross), but scattering ordinary dirt?  And what's with setting the dowsing rod on fire?

As for Angelique, well, no wonder she isn't more hipped on consummating her marriage.  If she can get that jazzed about saying her spells, well, who needs a partner [blshy] I wonder whose idea it was to go for the throes of passion delivery, the writers, the director, or LP's.

Hee hee, she did get into it, didn't she?!

I liked the tarot cards she was using (those were tarot cards, right?)  Anyone know the name of the deck?

Definitely not Tarot since, for one thing, there was no Major Arcana.  It might've been an ordinary deck of cards, though I've never seen anything like them.  There were 4 suits-- hearts, bells, leaves (?), and some weird thing that looked like a cross between an acorn and a stick of dynamite.

Did anyone else get into Tarot because of DS?  My first deck was a Swiss 1JJ just like Natalie's.  The designs made it difficult to learn, but I still have it.

(The Tarot cards look like a deck of Old Maid possibly belonging to Abigail.)  ;D

LOL, VAM!
