... and were told that dsboards can't be found, yet wondered why others were posting away during that same period, it's because the dsboards server appears to be experiencing a router problem that is affecting some areas but not others.

Hopefully the forums will be accessible to everyone again soon, and thanks for your patience!

Current Talk '02 II / Re: How vampires learn their business
« on: July 18, 2002, 08:46:27 AM »

Most vampires seem to automatically know what to do.  When Barnabas first arose in 1795, he didn't know what his curse was, but soon found out and clearly did the "appropriate" things.

Tom already clearly seems to know what he's about!

So, how is it that Angelique, of all people, who did this to Barnabas and surely should know all about it, seems to be so uncertain as to what to do.  Nicholas has to tell her that she has to summon Joe herself and assures her that he will hear and that he needs her.  I really couldn't understand that she needed instruction!

Each case you've presented is different.  Barnabas was cursed by a witch but died from a bat's bite nonetheless, his conscience intact (though based on his behavior at different times on the series, some might argue against that last point).  Tom was sired by a vampire:  fanged and eventually perishing from loss of blood, and his behavior is the same as other vampire victims on the show-- they're driven only by their bloodlust, at least in the beginning.  Angelique was stripped of her powers and immortality, died as a human, and was transformed by a warlock.  I think as a result of that, she doesn't have the same instincts.

Quote
And then, when Joe didn't respond, she went "begging" to Nicholas for help and he forced her to do it herself, which she soon did.  I really couldn't see Angelique acting like that with Nicholas!!!

But I could totally see him enjoying his role as her "mentor".

Quote
Besides, she not only has her vampire powers, but she used to summon people like that as a witch, so she certainly should be quite familiar with it.

Yet she's a witch without her powers (assuming once a witch, always a witch).

Quote
P.S.  I couldn't find the original thread to tack this on to it - when there was a discussion of the location of Joe's bite marks in the mirror scene the other day

I don't remember that.  Could it have been on the SciFi board?

There's also a poster using the name akhet.  My Egyptology isn't the strongest so I looked it up and found that it's one of their seasons, or a hieroglyphic meaning "horizon".

Hi Perankh!

Several of us listed our results in that "Who are you?" topic.  (Thanky, Ringo!)  I can kick it to page 1 if you'd like-- just say the word.

And another possible result is of course Julia. :)

You are correct.  That's a nurse we will be seeing shortly in Collinsport Hospital.

How well I remember those starched nursing caps and white uniforms.  Eek!

In case anyone is interested that also gets the Bravo channel, the actress will be on TV twice tomorrow-- playing Tom's nurse and in a recurring role as a junkie hooker on Hill Street Blues, one of those eps airing tomorrow at 9 a.m. Pacific, 12 noon Eastern.  [The late] Beverly Atkinson, credited on HSB as Beverly Hope Atkinson, portrays such a despicable character that you can't decide which you want to do first-- strangle her or applaud the performance.

Hi Sarah!

Volunteers signed up only at the very beginning of the project and storylines are plotted way in advance, so it's not a typical round robin.  I don't believe there's an opening right now and if I'm not mistaken it's going on summer hiatus because Nicky is away, but I'll let him know about your interest, and thank you!

This little skit was simply my form of expression--my way of expressing my thoughts on a particular scene, done in what I hope is in an enjoyable, readable way. It is not meant to be made into a multiple part story--I have no such plans for this sketch or any would-be future sketch.

I understand.  And I'm glad you weren't upset.

So can I do this in the future...?

Please do!  I loved the last one, and it was obviously very popular.  I said in my post that it was never my intention to discourage you from writing and posting more of them, but oops, that's what I get for talking so much that I lost you [ignore]

However, I want to clarify to The Powers That Be that I am in no way trying to post "fan fiction" on this site; occasionally, I do find a scene in an episode that strikes my fancy enough that I want to comment on it by writing a parody--it is, at times, my chosen form of expression--nothing more, nothing less... :)

What might be bothering you about my comments, which btw were never an attempt to make you feel that I was coming down on you, appears to be a misconception that a parody or scene isn't fanfic.  I'm not trying to argue or get the last word-- my interest now is only to clear that up for you or anyone else that may be confused on this point, and I'm including outside links so that you don't think this is merely personal opinion.

The definition of fan fiction varies-- ask 10 people or check 10 sources and you'll get 10 different answers-- but the commonalities you'll find are that it's an original work by fans that's based on a show, movie, book, or video game, using characters (and anything else borrowed) that were created by someone else.  Fanfic is not, however, limited to prose.  OutsidetheLines' Guide to Fan Fiction Writing http://outsidetl.tripod.com/guide.html says, "Fan Fiction is not limited to pen & paper, [and] it isn't limited to stories either.  Just as there is so many ways to write there is many types of writing."  At the same site, it's stated that fanfic can be a very short story, an epic, can be posted 1 or 2 chapters at a time or be a series in the making, and it can be a poem, a love song, an opera, a ballet, a rock classic.

From an FF FAQ at http://www.loony-archivist.com/ptcarchive/faql.html

"What is fan fiction?
Fan Fiction is fiction based on a television series, written by fans.  Fanfic-- by and large-- is not scripts but prose.  While some have chosen to write their fanfic in teleplay form, those are few and far between.   Pieces range in length from vignettes to short stories to full blown novels.  There has been fanfic in media fandom for decades ... circulated through the post, and more commonly in "fanzines"-- not-for-profit anthologies of short stories, poems, novellas, and novels usually accompanied by fan artwork, published by fans and sold through the post at at conventions..."

I'm only a moderator, and not the only one, and my role is to enforce the guidelines.  But just as I make allowances for role playing as long as it's not ongoing, I enforce the no fanfic rule loosely in that I don't mess with short works including original prose, scenes, poems, songs, etc., and my reasons are that they're fun, they inspire discussion, and I can take on reading them, which brings us to the purpose for the no fanfic rule-- I can't possibly donate the time required to moderate longer works; the rule against fan fic will be removed from the guidelines when I have a lot more help.  This has been a general discussion forum since the original incarnation of these boards in 1998, and since then we (MB, Dom, and I) have insured that anything posted on the forums doesn't violate any other poster's rights (and please don't think that ff isn't capable of doing that), and therefore everything posted on these boards gets read by a moderator in a timely fashion.  Links to ff, however, are different, as we're not able to read it in a timely manner and therefore only check to see if the links are correct, but it's always been our policy that the content of links is the responsibility of the outside site's webmaster anyway.

In the past, short scenes or prose have been removed when they become multiple parts, but after an incident several years ago in which a poster was quite upset to find his work deleted from the board and returned with a polite explanation, I've found that it's best to communicate up front rather than wait until someone has done the work and then gets a shock upon learning it has been removed.  I also communicate my policy about ff from time to time because I do receive messages inquiring why one work was allowed to remain on the board but not another.

All I was trying to do in this thread was communicate that policy to you, and it's not my intention to discourage you from writing and posting more parodies.  I apologize for being so long winded today-- I'm usually not, and I'm sorry if you were upset by any of my comments.  Thanks.

And yes, I e-mailed MPI and told them about the trouble I had with the DS DVDs. I think everyone who has had any trouble should do the same.

Yes, and don't forget that in addition, there's a registered member of dsboards that is representing MPI, and on the 3rd page of this topic mpi_dvd_authoring welcomed comments and suggestions, so you can be assured that feedback posted in this topic will be heard by someone at MPI.  So please feel free to take advantage of that opportunity by providing input or airing grievances about any DS DVD here.

Our Nicky is off doing summer repertory and has asked me to announce that Chapter 57 of the ongoing serial Shadows on the Wall has been posted by our charming host, Tim Choate, at

http://members.tripod.com/~MrJuggins/shadows/wall.htm

In this latest contribution by Luciaphil, we find that Nora has developed strange powers following her ordeal, a feud continues between enemies-- one the spirit of a witch in possession of Tim Shaw and the other in a "poison green dress", the latter attempts to lure Quentin into an uholy alliance, and a dangerous guest pays a visit to Collinwood.  Enjoy!

Scout75, believe me, you didn't cause any problem!  I just wanted to be up front in case you decided to add on to it.  And please don't sell yourself short-- there are some wonderful multi-chapter stories on that SciFi LSB that are as hysterical as yours.  Thanks for your response!

I loved it too, scout75!  Very funny!!

I'm not trying to discourage you from putting a humorous twist on another DS scene, but I need to ask that you pleeeease not make this one an ongoing scenario.  I overlook the no fanfic rule for brief scenes like this because they're so darn much fun, but I can't if they're longer stories and especially if they have multiple parts.  I hope you understand.  Hopefully someday these forums will offer a fan fic board, but it's not yet possible.

Yet you're obviously very talented, and if you decide to continue this or any other funny scene or to try your hand at writing a humorous short story, I highly recommend the SciFi DS Lighter Side message board, and links to anyone's offsite stories are always encouraged.

Thanks!

If I want to add some quotes from a different post, it's possible to copy that text and put the quote codes around it.  But, then it won't have the text "So and so said."

I've seen some people post replies that include quotes from 2 or 3 others, and each is accompanied by the appropriate "So and so said" - and I can't imagine how that is possible.

Quote
I am eagerly awaiting the answer to your question.

I'm not going to pretend that getting the above is simple, but what I did was click "Quote" in Dom's post, copied what was in the reply window, returned to the topic and clicked "Quote" in Josette's post, then pasted Dom's part after Josette's in that final reply window.

But that really isn't necesary if all you want to do is attribute a 2nd quote to its author.  Once the response window is open, the entire topic displays underneath it (unless you use the Preview feature, which makes it disappear), so you can copy & paste the text of the 2nd message you're quoting while you're creating your message and insert the author's name before the 1st quote tag.  For example, I'll copy Dom's entire last message from below and will add the following:

Code: [Select]
Dom's[quote]Hooray!

Good luck Josette! I am eagerly awaiting the answer to your question.

Dom[/quote]

and this is how it'll look when it's posted:

Dom's
Quote

Dom

or even simpler, type this:

Code: [Select]
Dom wrote:

Good luck Josette!  I am eagerly awaiting the answer to your question.

Dom[/quote]

to get this:

Dom wrote:

Ignore the word "code"; it's only used here to get the YaBB code to show up so you can see it.  And you don't have to put any spaces before and after the tags; I didn't, but the system added them anyway.

Did that help?

Wasn't the dress Angelique was wearing the same as the one she wore as Cassandra/Angelique was aging? It would make sense since she died in that dress and Nicholas probably just put her in the coffin, where she woke up as Vampire Angelique in the same outfit.

Here's the dress Angelique wore in the coffin...

and the last dress worn by Cassandra before her "death"...

I'm assuming they're the same, the collar and cuffs altered.

Cassandra in it again, this time with her hubby...

and oops, here it is again...  Oblivious much, Roger?
