Current Talk '02 II / Re: OT: Role Playing

I've heard of this but am not familiar with it.
What exactly is RPG?

A really basic definition would be playing pretend according to rules.  Most DS rpgs are run by facilitators.  They're a lot of fun, but I haven't participated in any in ages so I hope I explained it well enough.

Quote
What would constitute someone doing it?

A lot of us have usernames, avatars, signatures and personal messages taken from DS, and we encourage that.  But if in your messages you're pretending to be that character, as with Sarah looking for her relatives or her doll, you're role playing.  RP is fictional storytelling, same as fan fiction, except the author puts him/herself into their writing, and like FF there are websites dedicated to it.

From the User Agreement/Guidelines:

2. The purpose of these forums is to discuss DARK SHADOWS, its characters, actors and storylines. Role playing (putting oneself or another poster into the DS story) is discouraged, and repeated efforts to role play may result in removal of these posts from the board. This does not, however, refer to DS-related usernames or signatures. These forums also do not accept fan fiction and such works are subject to removal.

Happy Birthday, Bob!

That was hysterical, Cris.  Another reason to celebrate-- the return of the infamous towel photo, hee hee!!

I know that some posters participate in RPG elsewhere, so I post reminders now and then to please not role play here.

Sixteen.  But that's all I'm allowed to say.  She doesn't want anyone knowing she's related to me -- too embarrassing.  LOL
(That's gratitude for ya.  After I've devoted my life to her care and feeding, and whatnot).

Oh, the fun she could be having if she decided to join in!  I hope she'll change her mind about posting her questions.

Lots of great stuff here, Luciaphil!

You know, listening to Nicholas and his plans for starting the master race there, I am reminded of a conversation that took place on one of the listservs a year or so ago.  IIRC, someone with a medical background gave a very convincing argument that Adam would have to be sterile.  Sooooo, all this sound and fury might actually really signify nothing.

Hmm, I could make an argument that every body part and organ should have been rejected by every other, even if they weren't stitched together before the advent of anti-rejection drugs, or that such a creature shouldn't be able to walk or talk, so I'm thinking that if I'm supposed to buy that Adam can live beyond 5 minutes then I can accept anything else about him, including that he can procreate.

Maggie's returning memories--very powerful stuff.  As was Nicholas' spell with Carolyn (which was also quasi-erotic).

The spell that Nicholas put on Carolyn makes me wonder why he went to the trouble of making a vampire out of Tom, which required the help of both Angelique and Joe, and it tipped off Nicky's enemies that there's a vamp in town and, in addition, endangered his precious experiment, whereas he obviously could've just done a little "you will forget you saw a coffin" mumbo jumbo and then poor Tom could've made it home in time to watch his favorite shows on the tube.  ....

I know, I know-- I wouldn't have missed vampire Tom for the world!

So, was she a DS fan or something?

Ayup.  (Or however they say "yeah" in Maine.  Sheenasma had to educate me on the correct pronunciation of "Bangor".)

Oh Patti, think "Bunny Years"!  :D

I was wondering...
Is it safe to assume that Roger Davis is not married at the moment?  (Not that I want to marry him or anything.  Just curious).

Nope, he's married.  His wife accompanied him to the Anaheim Fest and he introduced her around.  They met at a DS Fest.

Upon closer examination, I realized that this thread actually calls for the two most disturbing DS moments. So let me add to my original remarks:

(1) Amanda Harris
(2) Olivia Corey

If you want to read a great story about Edith, check out Luciaphil's "The Education of Judith Collins."  What she has completed is posted to ShadowsAfterDark on YahooGroups.

http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/shadowsafterdark

Note:  The group IS age-restricted, so you have to sign on and click the link accepting the disclaimer before you can subscribe.

The story is superbly written and in addition to creating a really plausible background that explains why Judith was the way she was, it offers some implied solutions to the Edith paradox.  :) :)

Luciaphil's ongoing story is an all-time favorite of mine-- really excellent!  In addition to the SAD e-group, it's also available online on one of the SciFi DS boards (Creative, #25):

Chaps 1 thru 8 can be found at
http://bboard.scifi.com/bboard/browse.cgi/1/1/1645?lnum=40

and Chaps 9 thru 12 are at

Current Talk '02 II / OT:  Forum guideline and removed posts
« on: August 03, 2002, 06:46:18 AM »
I find endless enjoyment in the affectionate humor on these boards regarding all aspects of DS; however, I don't understand the need for the type of sarcasm that has found its way into this topic, and though it wasn't my original intent to remove messages in this topic, I've begun to do so.  If posters have questions as to why their particular post was removed, you can find your answers by reading my messages in this thread and rereading the guideline that was agreed to when registering, particularly as these pertain to innuendo and privacy.

This rule has been intact since these boards began and it was NOT written to solely address the issue of sexual preference.  And a small number of DS actors have discussed their homosexuality in publications, so it obviously doesn't apply to them.  All posters are asked to respect the privacy of DS actors, actresses, other personnel, and their families, and if anyone resents the guideline or that they're not allowed to spread gossip on the boards, perhaps a moderated posting board is not the place for them.

If someone would like to ask a question about the guideline, please feel free to do so, but if it's to complain about or poke fun at it, or to make backhanded comments about anything that's been said here, keep in mind that I'm already not in the best of moods after removing messages in this thread.

Current Talk '02 II / Re: Gay actor on Dark Shadows???
« on: August 03, 2002, 12:00:23 AM »
Oh dear, please don't misunderstand-- I don't think discussing a person's sexual preference is slanderous AT ALL; only that it's private.  The guideline, as Joe mentioned (thanks, Joe), mentions gossip, innuendo, OR slander.

It's always been the policy on these boards that if anything involving someone's private life isn't published in a reputable source or shared publicly as in a public appearance, it's not to be discussed here.  But please don't feel embarrassed or upset, ladies-- questions revolving around private issues do come up from time to time and I'm hesitant right now to remove this thread because not only does it remind everyone of what we feel is an important guideline but it also provides an opportunity to clarify its intent.

And funnie funnie Quentin magazine, too! Altho, I must [ashamedly] admit that I don't quite understand it all ... but ... erm .... I'm waiting to learn ^_^ Still love Willie's ....  ;D

No need to apologize, Daphne.  And as for waiting to learn, just wait til Quentin shows up, which probably means we'll be apologizing to YOU. :-[

Hey I wanna read the article on page 41 -- Quentin's Wardrobe Assistant Tells All.  (so which side IS it, anyway?)

'S okay, Ringo.  It's worth visiting again. :P

Your conscientiousness about server space is very much appreciated, and since you brought it up, what really would help is if it's referred to in replies in the rest of this topic instead of "quoted".

Regarding the private issues of anyone that worked on DS, it's always been the policy here that only what's been publicly discussed can be discussed here.  I'm sure you can understand that the intent of the forum guideline, which I've pasted below, is to protect the privacy of the DS actors.

Joel Crothers' obituary, as sanctioned by his family, stated that he passed away from cancer.

It's undeniable that what A.I.Collins and Connie have brought up hasn't been discussed by fans or that the board rule that prohibits further discussion of these issues has upset some of our visitors, but everyone behind the boards feels strongly that the policy is an important one.

7. These boards are not forums for the spreading of gossip or innuendo, or the slandering of the DS actors' private lives. Comment on their public behavior, whether it be a personal appearance or in the course of some other form of public exposure (i.e. a talk show, Fest appearance, etc.) is perfectly acceptable, however.
