first time i ever wanted to see Mame!

To be honest, I was skeptical about how much I'd enjoy the 3-hour play since Mame isn't a favorite of mine either, and despite receiving 2nd billing I knew Selby's role wasn't large.  But I was pleasantly surprised to find that time flew by and that I enjoyed it all so much.  And like ProfStokes, I still catch myself singing a few of the songs.  The credit goes to this production-- the performances were outstanding, and some situations were handled very humorously.  (I'm dying to find out what happened during the performance that ProfStokes saw in the manicure scene involving Mame and Beauregard; we saw Selby laughing obviously under the face towel and drape.)  Apparently [composer] Jerry Herman had attended the opening night performance, and I'm sure he was quite pleased with it.

And then there's the Selby factor:  His was a standout performance, and who knew he was such a fabulous singer?  His voice was so clear and his energy so high that, as ProfStokes said, he could be heard over the chorus, and we're talking about an unusually large cast for a play, at least so I thought.  The theater was quiet when he first appeared on stage, unlike during the matinee, but there was some yaying going on during his curtain call.  His smile instantly widened; I think he heard us... er, them. ;)  Oh yes, and his costumes-- I was especially fond of the jodhpurs (thanks, Bette) and black riding boots that he had on when kneeling to propose to the title character.  Of course there was also the obligatory white suit of the Southern plantation owner which his tall, slender frame wore wonderfully.

Producer Suzy Stokey was SO pleasant, and Selby was extremely gracious and friendly when greeting us after the play.  Because we were in an accessible part of the lobby, others wandered over to speak to him too, but he saved the best for us and that was a thrill (though actually, it was MsCriseyde that he was excited to see).  I've spoken to him in autograph lines before, but it was much different to be introduced to him (thank you, sweetie!), and for anyone that has never had the pleasure of gaining his attention, when he speaks to you his eyes look intently at you, all blue and sparkly and... what were we talking about again?  Oh yes, I do remember babbling something to him about how he's not supposed to have so much fun up there, which made him laugh and talk more about how he enjoyed doing the play.  Here's some fabulous news-- he said he's taking tap and singing lessons to help prepare for the future musicals that ProfStokes told us about.  Oh, and did I mention that he looked GREAT??!!

There were a couple of great poses that he did for ShadowGram that I hope came out well for Marcy.

Hey Midnite, have you got your little hand on his little tummy??  (Ah...What a nice place to be.)

ROFL, would you believe me if I said I have no memory of putting my hand there?  Yet there it is. [blshb]

Midnite, are you wearing black, or is it like a dark maroon color?  I can't tell.  You look lovely.

Thanks.  It's a wine colored set, with the outside sweater very long, and a black skirt.  All the flash was in the boots. [winkb]

Connie, I'm so glad you brought up Sheenasma's The Untold Tale.  It's my favorite ff story, and the title says it all.

If I didn't post this correctly you'll have to forgive me since this is the first time I attempted to use another person's quote.

No problem, murph.  The 1st tag was fine and I added the 2nd one.  To get the text inside the quote box you need to include both.  Here's the

Hope that helped!

Fabulous, Criseyde!  I've never seen two more stunning people.  I guess that settles it-- I'm going to blow the rest of the roll right now so I can get it developed ASAP.  The pic I took shows the whole dress. :)

And where is a certain other picture I have seen, of another ravishing woman dressing up The Man's arm?

I have no idea.  However, hee hee, here's one I happen to have of him and me.  Thanks, Rich!

I hope ProfStokes and victoriawinters had as much fun as I did at Mame.  I'm looking forward to reading your reactions and reports, ladies, on everything from the play and Selby's performance to meeting him afterwards.  Did he come out to the lobby to meet you?  (He said the backstage area was too small.  They saw the afternoon show yesterday, btw, whereas MsCriseyde and I attended in the evening, as did our friend VampiRich as well as Marcy Robin, Kathy Resch, and their friend Pam.)

I'll write more about it when I have a chance, but for now I'll just say that his singing blew me away, his energy on stage and when he met with his fans was an incredible sight to behold, and to paraphrase a friend, ohmygodhewassogorgeous.

He mentioned that LP and KLS attended Friday's performance, and that Johnny Karlen had also come to see him!

No problem, jennifer.  You know how it is with this crowd of night owls. ;)

I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I am to read that you guys are enjoyng the board... and even addicted to it, wow! :D

Thanks, jennifer and Cassandra, for stepping in to help Annie with her forum question.

I definitely recommend reading boards from the bottom (oldest) up.  It's not unusual for new posts to appear while you're catching up, and since it'll cause the topic to automatically jump to the top, well, you get the picture.

Because the vast majority of visitors aren't reading everything, posters might want to consider the [overcolor=yellow]titles[/overcolor] chosen for new topics.   If your title is too cryptic, the audience that would be most interested in it might pass it by. :o

The entrance to the chat will appear at around the start time and can be found at the bottom of the Info Center on the forum's home page.

When you arrive in the room, try clicking "Reload" to bring up the chat dialogue.  To participate, just type into the white area at the bottom of your screen and click Enter [once].

Hope to see you there!

This question has been on my mind for awhile.

Then I'm glad you asked it. :D

How come there are a couple of DS people who seem to be exempt from the board guidelines regarding personal attacks?  It's like, it's not considered appropriate to post something that could be hurtful to someone, but it's allowed if it's something about Roger Davis??

No one is exempt from any board guidelines, including the ones addressing personal attacks, and that applies to both forum members and DS personnel.

I've heard comments from some posters that they decline saying anything negative about certain actors' performances because the latter has one or more staunch fans reading the boards, and as Dom mentioned, it's a matter of personal choice.  I think this is admirable-- it shows a genuine concern for others on the boards-- but on the other hand, the official policy is that anyone has a right to share their opinions here and any attempts to intimidate someone else to keep them from expressing their opinion won't be tolerated.

Quote
So, I wonder, well...how does anyone know someone close to him, or a family member doesn't see this board occasionally?  Apparently he married a fan, so it's conceivable his wife could read this board.  Not likely, but possible nonetheless.  No?  I mean, if I were his wife, I would find a great many things said about him on here, quite hurtful.  I know it could be said, "well, even a couple of actresses from the show have made disparaging comments about him in public, so it's all right".  But does that make it all right then?  See?  I'm confused.

I wouldn't call it unlikely that an actor or their loved ones could come across such remarks.  I haven't seen any evidence whatsoever that would lead me to believe that RD reads this forum, but I know he has read comments in the past that were made about him on other message boards, and I think it would naive to believe that anything said on an internet forum about a person will never be seen by them.  As far as reading them here goes, though at the current time only registered members are allowed to read the forums, some have registered anonymously, and neither you nor I know the identity of all members, and rightly so.  In addition, when the forum is reopened to guest traffic in the near future, everything said now will be archived (you have only to check out Current Talk I, II, and III to find evidence of this) and it'll therefore be available for guests to read at that time.  So posters would be wise to keep in mind that what's said on an internet forum is hardly private.  That also applies to sharing personal information about yourselves.

Quote
I guess I'm wondering if I'm totally missing something or my interpretation of things is off.  For example:  There's a popular actress from the show whose acting I think is quite poor.  I don't think I would ever post that opinion though, because it doesn't seem appropriate and it might fall under a guideline.  Would it??

If you mean would it violate a guideline to give your opinion about a popular actress on the show, my answer is no-- you absolutely have the right to diss the acting of any actor or actress.  However, there's a good chance your opinion will get debated, which is of course perfectly within everyone else's rights too.

Eloquence isn't my strong point so please bear with me. I am going to take for granted that what you wrote is what you meant and respond accordingly. I've been active on the forum just a few weeks and have started paying strict attention to each and every post as a "moderator in training," if you will, for less than two weeks so I am bringing to the table little knowledge of what has transpired here before my arrival concerning issues about personal attacks on Roger Davis. I may have to defer to Midnite to answer your concerns regarding that issue specifically. I don't recall seeing any such posts.

What's this about eloquence not being your strong point, sweetie?

All I can add to what's already been said is that if there's something you've read about RD, DC or any DS actor that you feel was a comment about their personal behavior as opposed to private, then please feel free to point it out to me.  Otherwise, I honestly can't think of an example of an inappropriate personal attack in a post.  The incidents that come to my mind were comments about public behavior (i.e., in the case of Roger Davis:  a performance, his behavior in front of a Fest audience, or published comments about him made by fellow actors).
