I seem to remember the ad being posted in the multimedia area [i think] of the archives here - so when everything gets going again  and those areas are reopened I'll bet it comes back, too!

This is the first chance I've had to look for it.  I found this one of the box (called musicbox.jpg, duh!), but haven't figured out yet which image file is the ad.

Current Talk '03 I / Role playing and Fan fiction / REPOST
« on: January 28, 2003, 07:56:40 AM »
Yay!, we completed our move to a new server and hope to soon reopen to new registrations and guest traffic.

In anticipation of the increased workload this will create for the mods, we feel we must strictly enforce the guideline concerning role playing and fan fiction according to the way it has always been written for DS Forums:  The purpose of these forums is to discuss DARK SHADOWS, its characters, actors and storylines. Role playing (putting oneself or another poster into the DS story) is discouraged, and repeated efforts to role play may result in removal of these posts from the board. This does not, however, refer to DS-related usernames or signatures. These forums also do not accept fan fiction and such works are subject to removal.

Effective immediately, fan fiction will be removed in a timely manner, regardless of its length.  Fan fic is any creative work of fiction, whether it be in the form of a story, script, scene, filk song, or poem.  Posting a link to the work or announcing new additions to it are welcome, as are requests for feedback ... and if space is provided alongside the work for leaving comments, encouraging your readers to take advantage of that feature would be greatly appreciated.  We don't feel this is an undue inconvenience to our users considering that there is free space available on other sites such as www.scifi.com/colony ; the latter has BBs created specifically for DS works.

Role playing is becoming a DS or DS-related character in your post and writing as if you're speaking through that character.  This doesn't refer to usernames, signatures, avatars, or personal texts.  There are sites dedicated to DS role playing as well.

If anyone has a question, please feel free to IM Dom or myself.  I hope to have my email set up by tomorrow at the latest.

Thanks!

Besides having the music box now, as well as a Barnabas ring (which just sits closed up in the box), I have a couple of other items that remind me of DS.  Both of these are placed on the very crowded top of a large oak bookcase I have with four glass doors.

One is a tall glass antique-style oil lamp I've had for some years.  I hoped to actually use it and thought it would cast a warm, comfortable glow, especially during the winter.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to use it.  The lamp oil I purchased was called "pure and odorless," but it still gave off fumes that really bothered me.  In the 19th century, my understanding is that the finest oil used was whale oil, which probably didn't have the irritating effects of kerosene (which is all that today's lamp oils are, though supposedly more refined).

The other item is a hand-crafted model ship from the East coast that was given to me when I was 10 by a distant cousin who was visiting from Europe. I mentioned this model ship once in the past and referred to it as a schooner (thought I'd try to get technical in my description), but my nautical knowledge is practically nil and I realize now that it isn't a schooner.  It looks exactly like the ship used in the movie "The Bounty" (the Mel Gibson version) and also like the one in the movie "Moby Dick" (the TNT version -- don't remember the ship from the original movie). Does anyone happen to know what kind of ship this might be a replica of?[/i]

Thanks, Minja.  I guess 1918 sorta rules that out, huh? ;)

There were seven members in the Tsar's family....but I'm aware of at least 2 others who went into exile with the family.....Alexei's doctor and one of the Tsarina's ladies-in-waiting.  I'm not sure if there were more than 2.  The Russian Orthodox church considers all the members of the Romanov family to be Martyrs of the Faith...and I imagine the same would hold for others who were murdered with them.  Sounds like they make a plausable "slaughtered nine".  I wonder who among the writers at DS KNEW about this stuff?  Do you suppose they had 'gypsy' consultants on call?

I thought of the Romanovs cuz Magda had made a reference to the Russian Orthodox's Twelve Days, and they were slaughtered by the Bolsheviks and it wasn't long ago that nine bodies were found (purportedly The Tsar, his wife, 3 of their 5 children, a doctor and 3 servants), but I had no idea of the timeline, oops.  But I guess it's also possible that the writer was boning up on gypsy history, saw that many of them were Russian Orthodox, and made the same leap?

And another important note, #5) When Julia comes from 1968 to 1897. . .Angelique recognizes her and asks how she is there?  Julia replies, "your here, Barnabas is here, is there any reason I should not be able to be here too?"

Thanks!  I forgot about that one.

Was it in that scene that Angelique tries to warn her away from Barnabas, calling him cold and I forget what else, and Julia snaps back with "Who made him that way?"  Meowch!!!

I'm guessing that it's on the main login page, but since putting in http://www.dsboards.com takes me straight to the home page, I have no idea of how to find it!!

You click Logout in either horizontal menu, then Login.  That brings up the login page.

Is this a ??new board??
Isn't the addresss the same??

No, the boards are the same, but they've been moved to a different server, so if you don't notice any difference then it means the move was a total success.  We're not ready yet to make the major change we had planned, so we moved to an interim server since our contract with the old server expired this weekend.

No matter what we do to the forum, it'll always have the same domain name-- dsboards.com.

No.  We didn't renew our contract with our old server, so we moved to another one temporarily.

I thought we were getting a new forum but when I logged in after cleaning out my browser ((;-)), it still says new forum is on its way.  What gives?

Hi Miss_Winthrop!

You were asked to dump your browser cache to get rid of the message that said that the forum was being transferred, and it was-- to a new, temporary server.  Our contract with the old server expired before we were ready to introduce our new plans for the forum, thus the move, but you hopefully won't notice any difference.  So our plans are still underway to make a change, but in the meantime the entire setup had to be moved, including all the files, and MB had to take us offline temporarily to make some necessary changes so that it would be compatible with the new server.  I hope that answers your question.

I'm here, Midnite - and am a big Angelique fan...quite willing to be more vocal. Haven't said too much about her 'cos she doesn't seem like the most popular character on the board. [lghy]  I love her to death, but isn't she just a rotten broad?

My sentiment exactly!  And I'm thrilled to hear you're an Angelique fan too.  Please don't ever let a character's popularity at any given time dictate who you talk about.  You never know if a lurker might be inspired to join you.

I've got a question about Angelique in 1897.

First, she doesn't show up until the "incompetent dabbler" Evan Hanley summons her from....where ever she's been.  That seems to imply that she couldn't just "appear" in 1897 to help Barnabas, even though we can assume she ALWAYS knows what he's up to.  Which would in turn imply that she's answerable to 'someone' and not entirely free to do as she pleases.

I assume that Angelique spent the previous 100 years (since 1795, when she was burned by Ben Stokes) in hell, then was brought through the flames by Evan and Quentin.  She clearly has already lived through 1968 because we get clues in the 1897 story that this Angelique 1) knows David; 2) knows that Chris is a werewolf; and 3) admits to having been in 1968 previously; and 4) gets huffy when she's called "Cassandra".

However, all this will get screwed up once we get to 1840, but I digress.

Quote
Except that once she's IN 1897 she acts as though she's a free agent, can come and go (and create doppelgangers), help or not help, be cruel or kind, entirely to suit her own fancy.

And while I'm asking....WHAT exactly IS Angelique at this point?

A very powerful witch-- immortal, still obsessed with Barnabas, but smarter and wiser than she was as Cassandra.

Quote
In 1795 she was a living woman.  A living woman who practiced the occult arts, but a living woman never the less.  But what is she now?  A  ghost?  A reincarnation of herself?  A demon?  What?

Yes, she was human when we first met her in 1795, but do you remember when she was strangled by Barnabas and came back as a ghost to testify at Vicki's trial?  Somehow she made it to 1968 and became the witch Cassandra-- powerful but in some ways bumbling-- and was able to bring Nicholas down.  She appeared to Liz as Cassandra again, but at some point was delivered by her Master back to 1795, where she met up with Barnabas and begged him to stay in that time with her.  (They were supernatural, immortal beings, which seems to make that unlikely, but whatever.)  She was burned by Ben, then arrived in 1897 by way of Evan's incantation.  In other words, her timeline so far goes from 1795 to 1968 back to 1795 to 1897.

So, was that clear as mud? ;)
