Calendar Events / Announcements '05 I / Re: DS Fest 2005 Registration
« on: April 25, 2005, 06:31:18 AM »
I'll be there!!  :D  I sent in my Registration yesterday!   ;)  I paid $95 for everything - Fest, Banquet, and Mansion Trip.   8)  I can't wait!!

Sally, and anyone else who has already paid for their banquet ticket--

Note that the banquet rate was incorrectly listed on the form as $50; it should have read $55.  ::)  The total for the bus trip, 2-for-1 Fest admission, and banquet is $100.

I am heading west to! Can't wait but not doing the bus trip. I learned my leason on the trip to Newport in 2003!

I've never done a Fest bus trip, but $15 seems a bit much for a 10 minute drive to Greystone, even with the craziness that is our current gas prices.  If you have access to a car, it's an easy drive even if you're not used to getting around L.A.-- the hotel is on Highland Blvd.; make a right from the front of the hotel and go 4 blocks south on Highland to Sunset Blvd. and turn right.  Continue on Sunset into the 90210 area code (the Hills of Beverly :)), ignoring [big] Doheny DRIVE completely, and look for Sunset to fork into Doheny ROAD, which continues west, or Sunset Blvd. to the southwest, and take little Doheny Rd. for another 5 blocks until you come to Loma Vista Drive.  Turn Right on Loma Vista and the Park entrance will quickly appear on your left.  The gate opens at 10 a.m., and there's *free* parking at the top of the wind-y road.  (Can you say "bleeder valve"?)  Then follow the others to find your way down winding paths to the house, but if you're feeling adventurous you really don't need the Fest group.  It's a public park and the house is closed anyway, so the best you can do is peer into the windows, and there's a ranger if you have a problem finding the house.  Hmm, I hope Pierson will call ahead to make sure there won't be any filming at the mansion that day.

Bring a picnic lunch if you'd like, some sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and enjoy.  On a clear day (ha!), you'll have a view of the city.  :D

There is a fair use clause which is unique to U.S. Copyright law.

The fair use exceptions are comment, criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship and research.  Determination depends on:

    *      the character of the use, including whether the use is commercial or for nonprofit educational purposes
    *      the nature of the material to be copied
    *      the amount and importance of the part copied (in relation to the whole work)
    *      the effect on the market

If fair use doesn't apply, US copyright law requires that you seek and acquire permission first.

Wow.  That was harsh.  Kudos to Frid for taking it in stride and getting a chuckle from it too.

OK...I realize this thread is a bit old, but I'm posting to it because I'm curious.  I created a music vid website out of entainment for the series.  As far as I thought I was doing nothing wrong, but that could be my ignorance in the whole situation.  I received an email from someone at MPI Media Group today asking that I remove the website because of use of the clips in the videos and without permission.

I'm sorry to hear that, Melanie.  How upsetting that must be for you.  Not that it's any consolation, but other fans have been contacted as well over the posting of vids from MPI sources.

Quote
I'm just curious as to where the line is drawn.  The videos were created for fun and at the end of each vid I put the images were property of DCP...although I'm sure that doesn't make a difference in this matter.  I have seen this done by fans of other fandoms who have made videos.  I see pictures created, gif's done...I'm just baffled and maybe more than anything confused. :(

Well, what may have attracted MPI's attention was that your vids were created exclusively from the DVDs.

You mentioned the pictures and gifs you've seen online.  In regard to what's on the Forums, we make it a point to not take screen grabs or vids from MPI's DVDs, and MB's montages are created from TV broadcasts. We try to be watchful of anything posted that may impact MPI's sales; to date we have not been asked to remove any material.

And please know that both MPI and DCP are represented on these boards.

This isn't actually an announcement.  I thought I'd share the link to this post in the Dark Shadows topic on the Classic Horror Film message board.

Skip down to the 4th post from the bottom on this page, authored by Southern Beau-- a DS fan who described himself in an earlier post as Don Briscoe's cousin, and this is his response when asked by HorrorFan (our David) to share some of his memories of Don from family reunions:

http://p075.ezboard.com/fmonsterkidclassichorrorforumfrm14.showMessageRange?topicID=70.topic&start=41&stop=60

I can't verify that this person is really his cousin, but I can't say that he isn't.  But this bittersweet account from someone who claims to have shared some personal time with Don Briscoe seemed appropriate to share here.

I understand the need to separate captions from fan fiction, but
we can we at least do a line or two of dialog right?
Right.  :D

To clarify, posts with more than 2 lines of dialogue are removed.

Thank you, Luciaphil and artist07.  And what a marvelous review, Luciaphil!  Thanks for the link.  (Earlier I added an l to the end of it, btw.  ;))  The plot seemed muddled, and apparently it does for you too.  Bummer.

Please keep in mind, however, that the Forums' theme (appearance) may change.

Well, darkgreen apparently isn't an option with this theme.   :-   And you may have noticed (or not ;)), that the main topic is now the darker rather than lighter color.

I'd have to play around with other shades of green to see what's readable for this theme.  But once again, keep in mind that there could be a change.
