Current Talk '06 II / Re: Worst DS Memorabilia?
« on: August 09, 2006, 03:04:31 AM »
I remember looking through a cane catalog (it might have been DutchGard) and finding the wolf's head cane.  DS wasn't mentioned by name, but the description read, "Wolf's Head Cane (Yes, this is the one!)," which I found rather amusing.

The DS FAQ confirms that it was DutchGuard.   [thumbleft]  Then, it was $296.00; http://www.dutchguard.com/p-117.html shows only a $4 price increase since the FAQ was written.  Their online description now says:

Sink your teeth into the lore of this legendary alpacca wolf head cane; a favorite of vampires, movie actors, and those who relish a memorable style. ...

When I got it awhile ago I just called and asked if I could order the Barnabas Bobblehead.  They said "sure" and I got one.  They didn't mention the collector's club at all (I'm not in it).

Great!  That's good to know.  And thanks, CyrusL.

I chose the black medical bag.  She seemed to always keep one handy, even in 1840.

I thought you had to join MPI's club to get the Barnabas bobblehead.  But I've seen others for sale on their website.

Tarrytown's where we finally met in person after years online as friends in cyberspace, remember?  ;)  In the elevator, LOL!  I was like, "Who is this person that knows me and I don't know her!"  ;)

LOL!  Girl, you are THE hardest person to track down.  [lghy]

And that's also where you won your music box from the 1990 show too, right?

Yep.  I keep it on a shelf in this room.  Construction on my house finished a week ago (today's the last inspection, thank the gods) and the Blue Whale sign from that series was given its own special place in one of the new rooms.  Near the wet bar, of course.   :P

Since we had the final Fest in 2004, next came the Hollywood Weekend 2005 followed by this year's 40th Anniversary Celebration Weekend.  :P
Actually, I thought the final one was in 03 in Brooklyn and 04 was in Tarrytown.

Yes, thank you-- I frogot about the Fest (in Brooklyn) that I didn't attend, lol.  The Final Farewell Festival was in '03, and in '04 was the DS Weekend in Tarrytown.

What I really think they meant was the final regular fest and then they called them a week-end.

Well, that's how it appears now, but I don't believe for a second that it's what they originally meant.

What I'm wondering now is: why did I get another mailing of the Fest materials today, since I'm already registered to be there?  That's a waste of money if they're sending duplicate mailings to those who have already been to a Fest before....[hdscrt]

PansyFaye (who occasionally reads the Forum, btw) usually sends out a schedule of events close to Festival time.  Though the same info is here too, not all DS fans are online, and they may not subscribe to the ShadowGram newsletters.

does anyone know if they are saying that this will be the "last" fest?

mscbryk, I haven't heard anything about that either way.

remember they said that three years ago with the brooklyn fest and then the next year they called it something else.

Oh yes.  Since we had the final Fest in 2004, next came the Hollywood Weekend 2005 followed by this year's 40th Anniversary Celebration Weekend.  :P

The blogger is entitled to his opinion of the experience, but Loretta Swit's behavior at an appearance that was non-DS related is off topic for these boards.  But since her name has come up in the discussion of actors who charge for autographs, I'll add that I think her well-known history of donating the proceeds raised from signing MASH items to animal rights activities sets her apart from actors who seek only personal profit.

BTW, a post in the topic was edited per the Forum Guidelines, specifically #7, that refers to the posting of gossip and libel.  The poster is welcome to send me a PM if there are any questions about it.

But I never understood how Barnabas the Vampire could stand to TOUCH the silver when silver (as in bullets) should have been akin to Cryptonite for him in that condition.  Vampire-lore entusiasts, correct?  Or no?

For some vampires, a silver weapon makes a wound that doesn't heal.  A common repellent is garlic, but not silver.  And of course using a wooden stake is the more traditional method for killing a vampire.

I always believed that Barnabas' silver wolf's head cane was a homage to (or ripoff of) Larry Talbot, who, btw, can be seen holding the cane when he was between transformations.

What I wonder is why a vampire would want to keep such a highly reflective surface close by, but that's me.   :P
