In the living room, Burke gets Sam a drink and he refuses it. This is probably a first for Sam

Yes.  He also walked out recently on a perfectly good drink at the Blue Whale, that time because he put Maggie's well-being ahead of his need for a drink.  The writers seem to be trying hard to make Sam as sympathetic a father as possible.  Unfortunately...

Quote
Sam promises to go on the wagon if Maggie will just get well.

We all know how that turned out.   :-

I'm not at all a David Ford fan, but I was also touched by Sam's emotional breakdown in the waiting room.

The nurse asks why and he won't say, I sort of wish he had, she might have taken the order more seriously.

Exactly.  I think Nurse No Name's guilt on the window issue is kind of iffy because she did it to help make an agitated Maggie breathe more comfortably.  Her first obligation was, after all, to her patient.  On the other hand, oxygen trumps fresh air, and the doc made sure it was standing by, so I believe that's where she made her mistake.

And since she would have to leave the room to page a doctor, it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to tell a nurse to never leave a critically ill patient's side, even for a moment, and at the same time expect her to page you if you're needed.  But he did not, btw, tell her that he was going to be within shouting distance.

Seemed to have trouble finding her heart.

I'd have to rewatch, but IIRC her stethoscope was placed over a lung before it was placed above the heart.

When I saw Carolyn in the drawing room in her bathrobe (or was it a peignoir or a negligee?)...

A dressing gown?  Anyway, I'd kill to have one just like it.  I'm imagining it was a soft blue, but I really have no idea.

On Halloween nights I light all the candles in the front of my house (and it's a lot of candles) and turn out all the lights.  The effect is quite spooky, but I always marvel at how I still cannot see much of anything in candlelight.

I had a mini marathon last night to catch up to the project.  That's a lot of creepiness for one sitting, so it's a wonder I didn't have nightmares... which of course let Lydia off the hook.

In this ep, Vicki mastered the art of understatement when she told the good doc:  "I heard some dogs outside her window."

In situations like this where there's been massive blood loss, was it not until the '91 series that someone finally thought to ask where all the blood went?

Frances Helm did a great job playing the nurse.  But that he didn't tear into her after she ignored not one but two of his clear and direct orders speaks to the awesomeness that is Dr. Woodard #2.

I noticed something the writers overlooked, though.  Joe said his blood type was A, but was it Positive or Negative?  That was very important.  [6184]

Just an idea-- if Maggie is A+, whether Joe's Rh factor is positive or negative wouldn't matter.  An A- or A+ individual can donate to someone who is A+ (and both also to AB+).

Is there anything in the genes about hand domination? My two older sisters are left handed (twins) and all 4 of my nieces (2 to each sister) are left handed as well, though everyone else is right handed.

This is waaay off topic so I'll be brief.  First off, there are 2 gene variants-- 1 for Right handedness (which is more common) and 1 for Left handedness.  One inherited from each parent results in 3 possible combinations:  R/R, L/L or R/L.  So to answer your question, the gene variant for right-handedness is dominant in the sense that R/R results in right-handedness HOWEVER anytime that a gene variant for left-handedness is present (L/L or R/L), environmental factors will determine the outcome.

No.  Blue-eyed Quentin and blue-eyed Angelique could not have produced brown-eyed Daniel because the gene for blue eyes is recessive.

It's much much more common to see the reverse, but yes, it is possible.  You have to forget what you were taught in high school-- that brown eyes are dominant over blue eyes-- because in fact eye color is influenced by more than just one gene.  Through recombination and inheritance from both parents, the dominant phenotype (i.e. brown eyes) can emerge from parents with a largely recessive phenotype (blue eyes).  (Getting back to DS, PT Quentin's and Angelique's ancestry is not completely clear.)  My information comes from my Masters studies in Developmental Biology, but if you'd prefer to hear it from a geneticist, that's cool with me:
