Current Talk '17 I / Re: "Filthy" DS Topic
« on: February 27, 2017, 03:18:43 AM »
I say it was on DS.  Unless I'm suffering from DSFMS, it was in the episode where Barnabas was dying from the vampire bat bite and Angelique was arguing with Ben.  Thayer David, who was obviously an incredible method actor and immersed himself in a role, was Ben and acted accordingly.  If I remember, he went off-script somewhat and shouted at Angelique (paraphrasing here):  "I don't care about your damn..."

Admittedly, I didn't check the DVD, but I honestly don't recall the d-word during that exchange.  However, Roger did say it very early in the series.  In the infamous hundred miles/hundred feet episode (#17), after Bill Malloy points out that they can't prove that Burke tampered with the bleeder valve, Roger tells him, "I don't give a damn about proof."  So yes, we heard it on DS in 1966.

Salem, on the coast a few miles northeast of Boston, is known for the Salem Witch Trials during America’s early colonial period. In 1692-93, residents of the Puritan village and surrounding area were rocked by numerous accusations and persecutions of people suspected of malicious witchcraft (cruel spells and curses, strange abilities, unexplained maladies, etc.). In the widespread hysteria and paranoia, men and women were subjected to horrifying imprisonment, often-biased “guilty or innocent” trials, and severe physical tests to “prove” witchcraft. Twenty people – 14 of them women – received death sentences by hanging; 1 man was crushed by heavy stones. Additionally, 5 others (including 2 infants) died in prison.

LARA PARKER’s  2nd novel – “DS: The Salem Branch” – explores the chaotic and terrifying events through the eyes and life of “Miranda Duval,” LARA’s DS character as an early incarnation of Angelique in the 1692 flashback sequence. Lara extensively researched late 17th century life in the area and traveled to Salem in the course of writing the book.

Personally-autographed copies of the novel (and her other 3 DS novels – “Angelique’s Descent” (#1), “Wolf Moon Rising” (#2), and the latest and final book, “Heiress of Collinwood” (#4) – are now available directly from Lara:

And not a single TV set in the whole house?  The only one we saw was in Buffy's apartment in '70 parallel time.

We saw two TV sets on the series-- that one in Collinsport (1st image in DS Wiki's Gallery) and this one in Bangor:

FX Schedule Eastern

Dom, it's definitely not you!  They're still messing with our heads; Cary and Kerry, wth?

Dom,

Julia appears in a few of the books, yet she only graces the cover of House of Dark Shadows-- the movie cast seen in posters, but flipped.

Reprints of the first 5 books feature Barnabas on the cover, though he's not in them.  That must have disappointed a lot of kids!  He's even fanged in one, sigh.

Now I don't know if I want to watch it....

See it anyway, Patti.  It's very good.

True.  Now, feedback about what's happening on our favorite TV shows can instantaneously get to  producers, media companies and showrunners via social media, especially Twitter.

patrickm, hopefully you found something to like in Chapter 2 since they slowed the story down and explained a few things, making it much more comprehensible.

Great song choices in this one!

So far, we know Selby appears in the pilot and (according to the preview) in Chapter 3.

The Seaview/Carey Mansion in Newport, RI, of course, served as the exterior of Collinwood.  A wing of it, at least during the early seasons of DS, also served as the exterior of the caretaker's cottage.

The scenes outside the caretaker's cottage as well as the Collinwood garages were filmed at the Lyndhurst stables.

Episode 1 – “Danger”

Legion, based on the Marvel Comics by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz, is the story of David Haller (Dan Stevens) – a troubled young man who may be more than human.

Diagnosed as schizophrenic as a child, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. Now in his early 30s and institutionalized once again, David loses himself in the rhythm of the structured regimen of life in the hospital: breakfast, lunch, dinner, therapy, medications, sleep. David spends the rest of his time in companionable silence alongside his chatterbox friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), a fellow patient whose life-long drug and alcohol addiction has done nothing to quell her boundless optimism that her luck is about to change. The pleasant numbness of David’s routine is completely upended with the arrival of a beautiful and troubled new patient named Syd (Rachel Keller). Inexplicably drawn to one another, David and Syd share a startling encounter, after which he must confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees are the result of him being a mutant.

A haunted man, David escapes from the hospital and seeks shelter with his sister Amy (Katie Aselton). But Amy’s concern for her brother is trumped by her desire to protect the picture perfect suburban life she’s built for herself. Eventually, Syd guides David to Melanie Bird (Jean Smart), a nurturing but demanding therapist with a sharp mind and unconventional methods. She and her team of specialists – Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris), Kerry (Amber Midthunder) and Cary (Bill Irwin) – open David’s eyes to an extraordinary new world of possibilities.

Noah Hawley serves as Executive Producer, along with Lauren Shuler Donner, Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb, Jim Chory, and John Cameron. Legion is the latest project from Hawley and Cameron, two of the executive producers of the Emmy® and Golden Globe®-winning FX anthology series Fargo.

Legion is produced by FX Productions and Marvel Television, with FXP handling the physical production.

I left this thread to watch just now and when I returned there was another handful of reviews to read.  Thank you, MB, but be careful since some reviews will spoil a few things that you might prefer be revealed during the episode... Though none compare with the huge bomb dropped by Shadowgram; patrickm, I share your sheesh.

Anyway, just as I thought the X-Men movies were starting to suck, we get the weird and wonderful Legion.  I was riveted watching it.  I know the clothes and hairdos and music tell us this is the 60s, but the technology does not, and there's a timeliness to the whole "what does it mean to be normal?" question.

And where else will you hear David Selby say the line:  "If he so much as farts too loud, we're going to Level 2"?

495
She couldn't hold that spoiler until we've at least had a chance to watch the episodes?  Thanks so much, grrr.
