********************************************
Hello, Dark Shadows Fan,

ShadowGram (SG), The Official Newsletter & News Source for Dark Shadows (DS), announces the following breaking news.

**** DAVID SELBY – UPCOMING APPEARANCES

--- David (Quentin) is the invited keynote speaker at the 275th Anniversary Banquet at the historic St. Peter's Episcopalian Church in Salem, MA, on Sept. 18, beginning with cocktails from 6:00-6:30.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 24 St. Peter St., Salem, MA 01970. 978-745-2291.

A church representative says: "The theme for this evening is that of our becoming more and more an inclusive church; stated simply in our mission statement: We are `A House of Prayer for ALL People'. We are set in a culture that is also struggling to become more inclusive and embracing of human diversity, at least in some places. In particular, we have struggled for equality for all people without regard to race, ethnic background, gender or orientation. It is our understanding that we are becoming a place where the embrace of God's love is totally inclusive. We believe that culturally, the embrace of diversity is to the betterment and well being of our society." David's " wonderful new book on Abraham Lincoln of course underscores this notion" and he is "a vigorous campaigner for human rights."

St. Peter's "congregation was founded in 1733 by Phillip English, who had been convicted of witchcraft in 1692. He and his wife were sentenced to hang but they escaped the gallows," then later returned to Salem and, with "other prominent families, built the church."

Church publicity: Special guest David is an "actor/author/activist" with roles in DS, "Falcon Crest," "Tell Me You Love Me," and the 9-22 episode of TNT's new drama "Raising the Bar." ((See SG Update #188))

The celebration banquet "will be held at the Hawthorne Hotel. Tickets are $45 and can be obtained from the Church office by calling 978-745-2291 or emailing stpeters2@verizon.net Reservations deadline is Sept. 14.

For the church announcement: http://www.stpeterssalem.org/content/announce.asp?ID=556 and a detailed history of the church is at http://www.stpeterssalem.org/content/history.asp

--- David participates in 2 readings/signings for his latest book and first novel, "Lincoln's Better Angel," referred to above. He will read from, discuss, and sign copies of the book. Contact each store directly for more information.

Sat., Sept 20 – 2:00-4:00: Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 240 Route 22 West, Springfield, NJ 07081. 973-376-8544.

Sun., Sept. 21 – 1:00-4:00: Borders Books & Music, 17636 Garland Groh Blvd., Hagerstown, MD 21742. 301-745-5897.

Other readings/signings may be scheduled soon. This SG Updates List will announce confirmed news. The next SG #114 and subsequent print issues will feature details and more.

Chris mentioned the play at the Burbank Fest and now tells SG: "It's a dark comedy that takes aim at the New Age and the ridiculous lengths we will go to avoid taking any responsibility for our failures and foibles.... I play a Beverly Hills healer/guru who is barely hanging on to his sanity! It's a wild, wonderful, highly theatrical role and it will blow your mind!!!"

This is the company's main stage play for 2008. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Idyllwild is located in the mountains southwest of Palm Springs, roughly between Los Angeles and San Diego.

*** LYNDHURST ESTATE – PUBLIC SUPPORT SOUGHT TO COUNTER FIRE DAMAGE

The Maintenance Building at Lyndhurst Estate ("Collinwood" in both HODS & NODS) was damaged 7-13 by a fire caused by faulty electrical wiring. Staff and local fire departments quickly responded and there were no injuries.

The main mansion, built in 1838 with its distinctive classic American Gothic Revival architectural exterior, was not affected. Lyndhurst: There was "extensive damage" to "the nerve center of our operations" that "takes care of this historic site" and houses equipment, archives, in-progress restoration and repairs projects, and other specific items, materials, and references.

Both DS movies filmed on location at Lyndhurst, filming many scenes on the grounds and in a number of the elegant interior rooms with original and period furniture and furnishings. DS Festival attendees have toured the estate as part of the Fest, most recently a year ago at the 2007 Fest – Jonathan Frid's 40th Anniversary weekend, held in nearby Tarrytown.

Lyndhurst is "a National Historic Trust Site." Grants, donations, horticultural and social events, speakers, workshops, gift shop sales, tour fees, and other activities help maintain and restore the legacy of this 19th-century estate. Each SG print issue features recent and vintage photos, historical details, current public events/programs, and more.

SG hopes DS fans will help this very special location recover from the fire damage and continue its invaluable work. Your support will be appreciated by all who visit the estate. Thank you.

You may send your tax-deductible "special contributions for the restoration of the Maintenance Building" directly to: Lyndhurst, 635 S. Broadway, Tarrytown, NY 10591. 914-631-4481. www.lyndhurst.org

**** SG continues to invite all fans who attended the Fest to share their photos and reports for the upcoming print issues. My thanks to those who already have sent their pictures, because each captures a unique moment, expression, and mood. In this way, all SG readers everywhere – including many of the DS personnel, who directly receive complimentary copies of every SG issue – can be part of the Fest experience. You will be named as a Contributor in the issue(s). A complimentary Contributor's Copy SG print issue is given in appreciation for major contributions.

Please send all photos/images via email in jpeg format to ShadowGram@aol.com

Or you can send hard-copy by postal-mail to Marcy Robin / ShadowGram, P.O. Box 1766, Temple City, CA 91780-7766.

Please share with SG any mentions you find for any of the above projects and events: Publicity, photos, media articles, interviews, and reviews, program books, local mentions, etc. Those attending David's appearances, Chris' or Susan's plays, or the Castro Theatre screenings are invited to please share their reports, pictures, media reviews, program book, etc. Also welcome is any media coverage of the PBS "The 60s Live!" music special. I remember being startled when I met Jonathan Frid and realized he was my height.  And I am not a tall man.  Five foot eight inches.

DS magazine articles from the late 60s (in Famous Monsters, TV Radio Talk, 16 Spec, etc.) listed Frid's height at 6'.  I've never heard of that much height loss in a man, so perhaps he wasn't standing as straight as you thought?

And Alec Newman is an inch shorter than Depp.  (I thought he made for a fabulous Barnabas, btw.)

My vision of Barnabas is a tall, 'imperially slim' (can't remember the name of the poem where I read that) man who exudes elegance but is also hauntingly lonely.

It sounds like your mental image of Barnabas may have been influenced a great deal by the poem.

KLS has indeed been announced as one of the guests:

Shock It To Me!

The discussion about script suggestions continues in the topic "DS Redux: Your Vision," which was started by Zahir and is presently stickied to the top of this board.

Zahir,

There's an interview with Sproat (where Edward Gross, unfortunately, consistently calls him "Sprout") in the DS Tribute Book that discusses the evolution of the Barnabas character:

"...Dan hated a lot of what we blocked out storywise, because it made Barnabas sympathetic. Dan never wanted him to be sympathetic. He hated it."

And then there was HoDS, sigh.

Sproat also talks there about the contribution by Frid, who "suggested that we write against the evil and he would play against it, which would make it more interesting."

Yay, and thank you!

You're welcome, Magnus.

Someone on the thread linked to thought he was paying for it all personally.

Ah, I see what you mean.  (The mods here aren't required to read linked material, thank goodness, or we'd have no lives. ;))  I feel the promoter of Shock It To Me! who started the thread should have corrected that statement about Darren, but that's me.

Also just saw that comment in the AVManiacs thread about the movies supposedly being released as stand-alones, and I was going to mention it, MB.  Gee, that's never happened before. [ghost_cheesy]

Anyway, I adore NoDS, so if I may add my 2 cents, I think you should see both versions of it if you have the chance.
