Quentin hears from Magda that a woman whose name begins with J will kill him, and first he goes and tells Judith not to kill him, and then he goes and accuses Barnabas of putting Magda up to it.  What did he really think?

Unfortunately, I can relate as I've gone through some wild emotions too after visits to psychics or "fortune tellers"-- vacillating on what parts can be believed, wondering if I've missed some part of the puzzle, and pondering how to change certain predictions once I know about them.  And now that I've watched eps of The Mentalist and peeked at Psych (and even Lie to Me), I have yet another perspective on some of those readings, but that's another subject.

Was Barnabas following Dirk to the cottage?

I think so.  Dirk should stick to being rude because he sucks at lying.

Quentin is dead and not in the west wing so history is changed and the job should be done, but no Barnabs decides QUentin must not die in this way.  It makes no sense.

In Barnabas' mind, that isn't his job.  He thinks his mission is to learn what happened in this time to cause the events in the future, which can't happen with this huge change to history.  It's not the greatest rationalization, I agree, but Barn's way of thinking is often different from yours or mine.  ::)

I wish  they would have done a flashback to show how Quentin and Jenny met and ended up at Collinwood.

That would've been great!

There were many occasions when the color red appeared on Dark Shadows

It's also the color of a lie.  [snow_cheesy]

Speaking of that scene, s is for scissors, which Jenny used to greet her sister-in-law.  They were also useful for stabbing werewolves, cutting lottery slips, etc.

We hear Dirk getting conked on the head by Jenny but don't get to actually see it (more's the pity), but we do see him handle her roughly.  It reminded me of the Reader's Theater at last year's Fest in which Marie Wallace (as Eve) became wary enough of Roger's antics (as Jeff) to instruct him, "Pretend he's choking me."

As far as I can tell, Magda saw Barnabas in severe pain, remembered Jamison's interest in the now-missing cane, ran off to the cottage to stop Quentin, saw the sign of death on him, and went with him to his room at Collinwood, where she pulled her Tarot cards and her crystal ball out of her bag and looked into his future.  I suppose she takes the bag with her wherever she goes, even during emergency, just in case it might come in handy - but it seems unlikely.

Maybe Magda picked up the bag while Quentin got Jamison home?  We're not told how much time passed between the end of #718 and the opening scene at Collinwood, or if they arrived there together.  I can picture Quentin demanding that she meet him later and bring along the tools of her trade so he can learn more about his mark of death.  (Robservations calls it a mask of death, but I don't think that's what was said.)

Magda saw a mark of death on Barnabas, too, when she first met him.  I guess it's an unreliable talent or she would've seen it on a lot more people.

We get the black horn on the gramophone til the pretty one comes back.  And a very covered-up Judith.

Yes.  It's stated in the scene that silver is Barnabas' vulnerability.  Quentin was about to stick a pin in the doll's heart, but he's told, "It must be silver."  When he starts pressing the head of the cane onto the doll's chest, Barnabas is instantly incapacitated by excruciating pain.  But Jamison faints and while Quentin tends to him, Magda rushes in, so the ritual is ended.

I must point out (1) Barnabas handles that cane all the time, to no ill effect, and (2) Likewise, he handles wood--which we know to be fatal to vampires if piercing the heart--with a similar lack of concern.

Exactly.  He can come in contact with either unless they pierce his heart.

Though early in the show, Barnabas tells Maggie that the wolf's head is an alloy of gold and silver, presumably as a way of explaining how he's able to carry it, but once the cane becomes synonymous with the character, this is never mentioned again.

You don't interpret the evidence provided on the show to mean that silver is detrimental to a DS vampire, and I do.  Agreeing to disagree is cool with me, Zahir.  :D

Following his listing in...
ABC Soaps in Depth Top 100 Couples List
...Barnabas made the magazine's 100 Hottest Hunks list at #63.  He scored ahead of such characters as Marco Dane (OLTL), Cliff Warner and Dimitri Marick (AMC), and Miguel Morez (GH).

He beat Ricky Martin!?!

The magazine has not yet printed #1 through 50; will Quentin be one of them?

The voiceover stated that Barnabas found himself alive in the ghost's own time.  Is "alive" the right word for a vampire inhabited by an astral projection? [scratch]

The tower room exchange is my favorite B & A scene.  She is so powerful in this century, and seemingly omnipresent (?)-- how DOES she know the details (David's and Chris' predicaments) of Barnabas' mission?  Great hair, too, and a new dress.  But while she believes "your love would change me; your love could make me anything you wanted me to be," in 1840,
whether you believe him or not, his declaration of love comes after the change in her.
Angelique indicated that she was not present in the original 1897.

But she didn't indicate anything!  And shortly before he asked her, she told Barnabas, "I save what I know."  Yes, I'm being stubborn. :D

If David were in Jamison's place, we wouldn't believe in his cluelessness.

I like that.  I was surprised that Jamison took Quentin's comments to mean that his uncle was under an actual curse (by Barnabas).  David, who has experienced a dream curse, would not make that mistake.  Yes, I like it a lot.

Magda sure is speedy, arriving at the cottage in what seemed like a blink of the eye.  And she is welcome to clean MY house anytime!!  Okay, so I'd lock up all valuables first.

Oh, no need to apologize.

Yes, BUT--would they have worked?????

I think IluvBarnabas, in her last post in the topic, provided the definitive scene in that it leaves no doubt that vampire Barnabas was vulnerable to silver.  And the information came, not from Barnabas, but during an invocation to Ba'al.
