fanforever, I was referring to Quentin's motivation to kill Jenny, how he learned she was insane and still at Collinwood, etc.  In the 1897 redo (that includes the 1969 Barnabas), Quentin is out to kill her because she murdered him first.  But in the original timeline this didn't happen, he didn't rise as a zombie, and Angelique didn't bring him back to life.

(teastrainer, snicker!)

Games / Re: The Dark Shadows Alphabet Game
« on: April 14, 2009, 08:48:52 PM »
The Alphabet Game has always required words that are tied to DS.  Please submit answers with specific examples if their tie-in isn't obvious, which lately has not always been the case.  If that isn't possible, then please leave it to someone else or perhaps allow the "game" to end.  Thanks!

Since no example was provided in the answer given this morning other than that "it must have been mentioned at one time or another," another word is needed.  So, next is A.

Now I see why Q was out to kill Jenny now, though.   For years, I hadn't seen the earlier bit where [spoiler]Jenny killed Quentin.[/spoiler] Can you blame him all that much?

I do wonder what occurred in the unchanged timeline because it was made pretty clear that if not for Barnabas, Quentin wouldn't have ended up in the cottage originally, which is where he was reunited with Jenny, and where she murdered him.  What caused his murderous intent then, assuming he had one the first time around?

Loved Magda's pronouncement at Judith's arrival:  "Her majesty herself."

As cruel as Jenny's imprisonment in dismal rooms seemed to be, at least Judith saw to it that Beth checked on her a few times a day, brought her fresh food, and kept her clean.  Although Judith's biggest concern in institutionalizing Jenny at this point is the scandal it'll create, she admits here to taking pity on her, and considering the sad state of asylums at that time, it's looking like Edward's and Judith's first choice was the compassionate one.  And it was good to see Judith assume some familial responsibility when she acknowledged (sort of) that her brother contributed to the problem.

And just when I think Her Majesty is showing some humanity, she says to Magda, "Considering that she is your sister, I'm inclined to think there is already madness in her background."  Hee.

I'm about 10 eps behind the WP, but RobinV and the Program Guide list KLS as the opening speaker.

Just a quick moderator note to say that David Selby's appearance on TBAA is what's on topic for this thread.  [ghost_smiley]

I didn't quote the entire post that's linked, but I'm positive you'll find Charles' answer to your question there.

As to DS, syndication was the main reason for saving ...

Taeylor, your comments made me giggle!

Pansity hit the nail on the head about Beth's reaction to Quentin's bullcrap.  With women on reality TV shows often seen putting up with pretty much anything to get a wedding ring, Beth's unwillingness to be manipulated is quite refreshing to watch.

Magda's scenes involving Jenny, OTOH, are so heartbreaking.

I wonder how Sandor keeps his weight up when all he eats for breakfast is consomme.  Especially when most of it will end up in his moustache anyway.

I get that Magda's superstitious fears caused her to mistake Jenny's mental illness for demonic possession, but what was the big cross she sent Sandor to get supposed to accomplish?  Did Magda really plan to perform an impromptu exorcism?

And how the HECK did she find the keys to go into the basement and find Barney's coffin?

The door wasn't locked.  Oops?

I think it was Marie's real hair. I remember reading a story MW related where sh was riding the subway once when a woman recognized her from DS. MW was surprised the woman knew who she was because on the show her hair was always teased out to the ends.

Which still raises the question (yours, actually [ghost_grin]), did they need extra time to comb all that teasing out?  When I teased my hair back in the day (a rattail comb was my friend), I remember it taking ages to get out all the snarls. I am not going to provide photos, so don't ask! I don't think the ep was taped in reverse because Marie has said she created the pincurl bangs overnight.

And btw, I would bet money that Roger's hair was teased when he played Dirk.

Does it strike anyone else as odd that Dirk goes through the entrance to the servants quarters (which we know also goes to the kitchen) and comes back with a dagger.  Wouldn't a kitchen knife or butcher knife make more sense?  Most people don't just have daggers lying about for convenient use --

Since it's the servants quarters, maybe Dirk's room is back there too.  And I definitely think Dirk would own a dagger.  It's scary to think what else he might keep in his room. [ghost_tongue2]

Another interesting point here with Quentin not coming in the house.  What exactly are we to suppose he saw?  When he opened the door, did he know Jenny had a knife? Did he hear voices, or know someone was in there with her?  Did he shut the door and wait, KNOWING Judith was alone with a madwoman with a knife?

I think that seeing Jenny and not having anything for self-defense (which for cowardly Quentin means a gun) was probably enough for him to cut and run.

There's probably been a thread on this somewhere but I do get the feeling that the writers are trying to show Jenny as having multiple personalities.  The way she suddenly forgets she's met Barnabas, and her change in attitude, even in tone of voice.

But what we don't see in those changes in attitude and voice are separate and distinct personalities.  Jenny's confusion and forgetfulness (which are not the result of blackouts) and her mood swings, delusions, paranoia, withdrawal (in #745: [spoiler]Jenny didn't seem at all unhappy with her exile to the tower),[/spoiler] and in particular her hallucinations seem to me to be more in line more with schizophrenia than to dissociative identity (multiple personality) disorder.  And as I mentioned before, her view of an unintegrated "good self" and "self bad" (#719) are more likely the symptoms of a personality disorder than DID/MPD.

Barnabas sure developed a sudden skill for knowing what would motivate Jenny.  Makeup and girly things and pretty dresses.
Barnabas the sexist.  [ghost_rolleyes]

Do you suppose that Edith knew about mad Jenny and her babies?

Taeylor, it's what I believe happened, since Sarah, above anyone else, certainly had the motivation to send her back.  But yes, more discussion about it is best left to a new topic.   [ghost_wink]
