**** JONATHAN FRID SHARES HIS LATEST NEWS WITH SG (SG Exclusive)

Moonshine?

Jonathan Frid writes to advise me that he is busy preparing new readings for the DS Festival in Newark, particularly Jack Finney's intriguing story: "The Third Level."

Jonathan will again be staging a silent auction of memorabilia, including scrapbooks and one-of-a-kind scripts, and signing items for the winning bidders.

If you visit Jonathan's website at www.jonathanfrid.com, you can help determine what DS episodes Jonathan will screen and comment on in Newark (go to Festivals to join the Game).

More news will follow from Canada as the Festival approaches.

--- SG reminds fans that the 2009 DS Festival convention is Aug. 14-16 at the Marriott Newark Airport Renaissance Hotel, 100 Spring St., Elizabeth, NJ 07021. 908-436-4600.

SG Update #192 and the latest print issue SG #114 had more information about guests, planned programming, hotel location, and other details.

--- SG also encourages fans to visit Jonathan's website to enjoy all its sections offering Jonathan's candid and sharp observations on – almost anything and everything – as well as his career, Shakespeare, history, acting, literature, and, yes, Barnabas Collins and "Dark Shadows" too.

His official website: www.jonathanfrid.com

When you visit his site, please suggest "your five most favourite scenes taken from episodes." The "ten most popular" will be shown on the big screen at the Festival with Jonathan's comments" for the entire audience to watch. All suggestions must be submitted by June 1, 2009.

On the site, Jonathan also has a range of personal photos, interesting essays, available autographed pictures, and much more.

*** JONATHAN FRID LOOKS BACK AT THE DS FESTIVAL – BURBANK, CA – JULY 2008 (SG Exclusive)

SG #114 print issue featured Jonathan's own thoughts about the most recent Fest convention: Excerpt: "I keep reminding myself of the three recent and coming happy years involving my planning and presence at Dark Shadows festivals.... For this coming Festival next August I hope to participate in the events with other actors. " He comments on his feelings as he prepared for the Burbank event and for his previous Fest appearances (2006 and 2007). He also considers the coming Fest this summer...and he has plans....

A large version of the circular sofa also shows up in a scene in a hotel lobby in the movie "Grey Gardens."  Little Edie sits on it while awaiting a response from her lover.

How Trask could pull the wool down over Judith's eyes with simple religion reminds me of "The Night of the Hunter" (with Judith portraying Willa Harper, of course!) [woryg]

I don't recall anyone making that analogy before, but I think it's wonderful.  If only Rachel Drummond had been half as effective at protecting the children (a boy and a girl, right?) from the fake preacher as Rachel Cooper.

I had to laugh when Quentin said he'd just kill Magda.  His solution to all this problems with women.

Do you think he might've had a chance to escape the curse if he'd thought to kill Magda before the last nightfall?  Maybe Q's real problem is bad timing.

I suppose it's a good thing that the writers were consistent when they placed Rachel in Boston after the first time she ran away and then said it was only as far as what little she had could get her the next time she tried.

Maybe she allowed herself to return to the vicinity of Trask's school because she overestimated her own strength, or thought being in the employ of the Collins family would afford her some protection?

Geezus, do I really have to [spoiler]put up with her for another month?!  [rleyeb][/spoiler]

Oh Taeylor, you didn't have to explain.

Here's the unedited, complete interview:

Actually, much of the name dropping in the TV Party interview didn't make it into the magazine.

Thank you for the links!  jimbo, yours showed up right while I was stumbling about trying to find the durn thing.

I can't say I agree that SH "lost his perspective," but I also don't accept that advanced age is ever an excuse to spill your co-workers' secrets.  Being rude or gossipy is a choice that anybody can make at any age, and being older doesn't make it okay.  And I think it's quite obvious in the interview that his faculties are intact.  It's one thing to gain the maturity to stop caring about what other people think, but this is not the same thing as not caring whom you hurt when you choose to speak frankly in an interview.  Of course he has a right to tell secrets if that's his choice, but age is not the issue there.  Just MY 2 cents.

The comments in this thread are especially FANTASTIC.

Doesn’t it EVER occur to Rachel to run away and get on a train somewhere? It’s not like they had the FBI in those days – she could have headed out west and gone where no one had ever heard of the Trasks or Collinwood.  I agree with alwaysdavid who says that Rachel should figure out that Trask is bluffing.  If she got far enough away, he'd never be able to track her down.  It's only because she stayed close that he found her again.  DUMB! [ghost_huh]

Wasn't that covered before?-- that the carriage out of town was more than she could afford, and her only possession of value was the brooch but it would only get her as far as Boston.  And that was when the Collinses were paying her, whereas Trask seems to be pulling every trick he can to withhold her wages, like he did before to both Tim and Rachel so that they had to steal what was due to them in order to leave.  I'm sure he did/does it on purpose to prevent Rachel from leaving.  Trask is nothing if not obsessed with her, and he sees her as his property.

Her reasons for staying make for a hokey story, intended to have us see Rachel as a hapless victim.  Unfortunately, she's also annoying.

Dorcas and Dirk should get together.  And raise a little Dork of their own.

"Righteous cruelty" ... isn't that an oxymoron?

Collinwood seems to have a mind of its own here, what with its front doors refusing to close and the phone appearing on the foyer table as soon as it's needed for an emergency.

Why was Rachel so surprised to hear Trask's voice on the phone?  I can't imagine who else would be looking for her.  It's not like they had telemarketers in 1897.  And why take the call in the first place if she thought nobody knew she was there?  (Like Beth before, Rachel refers to her former employers here by their first names instead of Mr. Edward and Miss Judith.)

The presence in the woods made the sound of human footsteps, so perhaps that's why Rachel didn't consider it might be an animal.

Barnabas is obsessively interested in the welfare of Quentin, whose otherwise healthy wife recently dropped dead, and she happened to be the beloved sister-in-law of his housemates who happen to be gypsies, and said gypsies are terribly grief-stricken, so you'd think Barn would be all over it, right?  But no, he's entertaining Edward, and whom do you suppose did the cooking for THAT untimely little dinner party?

Maybe I should think again about trying to do this cold without checking any reference materials.

Taeylor, as long as you're adding something to what's already been discussed, it's fine.  But as on any posting board, reading the other messages in the topic before posting is a must.  I hope that was helpful.

The ep numbers, however, already appear in the subject for each post, so they've been edited.

(Hollywood Forever is very cool.)
