Current Talk '08 II / Re: Prop Project: The Delft Tile Fireplace
« on: June 17, 2009, 11:53:22 PM »
I have couple of Delft tiles myself and wish I had more, so I'm quite fond of this fireplace.  I always mean to take a look at the tiles and see what pictures are on them, but then I get caught up in whatever story is going on, so I forget.  Has anybody else ever taken any particular note of them?

The fireplace is prominent in scenes in Charity's bedroom in the house by the sea/Worthington Hall 2.0.  It IS quite pretty.  In #782, the camera zooms in on her sleeping face and you can clearly see the individual tiles.  I recall seeing some single figures, a sailing ship, some landscapes.

If Burke had been able to purchase the house (assuming this is Vicki's dream house), we can guess which room she would choose to sleep in since the same fireplace was in her room in 1795.  Then again, maybe not for that same reason.

Quote
Were those tiles made of styrofoam?

They look like ceramic tiles to me.

Quote
It might be fun to have a a fireplace made of fake Delft tiles with pictures of Dark Shadows scenes on them.  Sort of expensive, but fun.

I've seen tiles with images of Lyndhurst for sale on ebay.  Oh, and I've seen blue & white tiles of the real Widow's Hill (at the end of Marine Ave.) as it looked at the turn of the century.  Why not Seaview Terrace?  [ghost_grin]

Barnabas to Trask (before vanishing):  "I will deal with you then as I dealt with your ancestor before you."
Yes, while on the defensive, the best tact is always to give your enemy yet another reason to want to come at you with everything he's got.

If Gregory were so smart, he'd have someone keeping an eye on Charity.  But then again, you'd think he would have checked his daughter's neck after Dirk was destroyed to see if the bite marks disappeared.

Nancy Barrett's face and neck look puffy to me in this ep.  The hair and foofy collar don't help, but the nurse in my sees a dramatic change.  Sorry, sorry.

the whole dirt concept ... I do remember it being in other vampire lore!

Yes, they must sleep on it each night.  Any soil in the area should've sufficed for Barnabas, but as you say later, they tweaked the lore as a plot device to set Charity up.  I think they did mean that Barnabas at some point carried soil from the mausoleum, but if they meant to establish that Barnabas required soil from his grave, what did he use
in PT, where that Barnabas had never died??!
Quote
Run out the passage way Charity, you twit!  UGH!

I know!!!!!  LOL

Edward seems to have forgotten that he showed the one behind the bookcase to Laura when they were first married.

Heh heh!  The bookcase room gets as much traffic as the mausoleum room and Dirk's root cellar.

Quote
Would it not be more sensible to have stashed some in a safe place when you know that you are exposed.

He had some in the Old House basement and some in the mausoleum, but could he have anticipated that Carl told Meester Trask (of all people!), who moved quickly enough to not allow him any time at all to make other plans, thus catching Barn with his proverbial pants down?  Given just one more night, if he didn't move his coffin again, I think he would have prepared a second one or at least stashed some dirt somewhere away from the Old House and the not-so-secret room at Eagle Hill.

the Old House basement ... Did we ever see dirt on that floor?   Jeez!!

Nope.  I second your jeez!

Quote from: Taeylor
I just watched the show from the beginning a few months ago (including early Barney) and I am 99.9 % sure that the dirt lore was never used!

And it won't come up again.  (Or were you already saying that?)

I thought the dirt thing was only significant if the vamp left his homeland - Barn never did.

You might be thinking of Dracula bringing something like 50 boxes of his native soil when he traveled to the Black Sea, which was memorable because
it later led to his destruction.
But he slept on it while in his homeland too.

Good thing they started using the vampires can dematerialize, it’s very handy when that inconvenient rooster starts up.

When Barnabas used it for
freaking out Forbes at the Eagle,
it was done off camera-- all we saw was Nathan's reaction.  Now it's like they can't stop using the SFX!

Anyone remember where Judith might be (though given its dawn, Edward may have taken it on himself to handle everything, and she might not know yet.  Anyone remember if we have any time frame for when the body was discovered?)

It was mentioned the day before (at separate times) that both Judith and Edward were in town (separately?).  Edward apparently returned very late, but we don't know what came of Judith.  Carl's body was discovered at around 6 a.m.

Quote
Except that Edward gives Barn more credit for brains than he apparently has, thinking Barn would never leave the coffin in the same place once it was known what the hiding place was.  As we know, Barnabas apparently didn’t think of that.
I can't believe I'm defending Barnabas ( [milestone]), but could he have guessed that Carl would tell Trask, the one person who could obtain irrefutable proof of his vampirism before dawn, get past Magda, and find his hiding spot within a day?

Quote
Like with the werewolf, NO one seems to have thought of exploring the use of any of the probably numerous outbuildings on the estate.

I suspect Barnabas feels too dependent on being somewhere where he can be guarded, thus his backup plan of using the school/house by the sea.

Quote
Where did Magda get her hands on silver bullets.

The same place where Beth obtained a second pentagram?  The Braithwaites may be the best silversmiths, but they may not be the only ones.

Quote
NO ONE ever called her Mrs. Racogzy

That's an interesting spelling.  May I ask where it's from?  We see her signature on the show, btw, and it's spelled Rakosi.

Quote
I remember in Dracula he only needed the native earth to cross water (and I believe I remember Chelsea Quinn Yarbro using the same mechanism for her Count Saint-Germaine).

Ah.  I've never read CQY, but Stoker's Van Helsing said he must always return to it to rest or he'd perish.

Was this the first time we heard that there were 4 secret rooms or passageways in the Old House? [ghost_huh]

There has to be someone else willing to answer the "was this the first time" questions in the Watching Project.  Anyone?

IIRC, Carl was the 4th person who died because Barnabas was there. The others were Pansy Faye, Dirk, and Rachel.

And poor, disposable Sophie.

Besides Charity and Beth, what WAS he doing in 1897 to satisfy his bloodlust, anyway?

In the redo of the opener, Carl kicked the step open before realizing that it was the solution he needed.  That was cheating.

Quentin to Barnabas:  "You're my only hope."
(Help me, Obi-Wan Barnabas...)
Seriously, I'm still not buying it.  Quentin should be focusing his energies on keeping Magda happy until the next full moon, because SHE is his only hope.

Barnabas:  "Tell me the truth, Carl!  Tell me the truth!"
Carl:  "aughurghgurgleghghgh"
How the heck was he supposed to answer while his airway was being crushed?  (A creature that can dispatch a coffin that quickly and bend bars does not strangle like normal people.)

We're meant to know that Barnabas is acting rashly and irrationally, since it's clear that Carl had told the secret and Barnabas didn't even find out before acting.   I think all this was a combination of the fact that Barnabas's violent vampire nature was always a huge force that he could not always control, and the fact that we're all "human", and when our backs are up against the wall, often we behave out of blind panic.

That is just wonderful, Magnus.

And I must admit that fanging Carl to learn what he needed to know (as he did with Dirk) before killing him would have denied us an exciting Friday cliffhanger.

If DC really saw Barnabas killing Carl in cold blood as just a practical move because of John Karlen's plans, then he truly was nuts.

Yes.  Yes, he was.

Quote
You don't have a protagonist kill a man for finding out his secret life, not if you want him to stay a protagonist.   Barnabas is acting as he did when he was the show's villain whom we were meant to despise.

Exactly.  Rachel Drummond's murder conspiracy came about recently so that KLS could go on safari with her boyfriend... and it had much less impact since one of her killers was insane/doomed and the other was under the thrall of a vampire.

He knows Carl is NOT going to trust him and is real unlikely to listen to him if he tries to keep him from talking.  My though t is that in the back of his mind hes thinking Barn has some power to make Carl forget without killing him – IF he chooses to. My guess is that that's the life ring he clings to to keep from facing the fact that he was willing to have his own brother killed to save his hide.

If one puts stock in the voiceover, it makes it clear ("knowing...the man will be killed") that Quentin expected his brother to die in the secret room.  So Quentin finding Carl and stopping him from talking would, I imagine, involve some sort of violence.

my friend Linda was a DS fan, and she says she named her daughter after a DS character, Sheila. My memory must not be what it used to be, because I can't think of a "Sheila" in Dark Shadows. Help?

The DS Almanac states that Vicki's name was originally going to be Sheila March, the source being Shadows on the Wall.  Don't remember that from SotW, however; it says the baby was dropped off in March, but that she was named after the season and not the month.  Anyway, that's the only Sheila I recall.

Quentin to Magda:  "You visited with your tribes, and you compared notes on picking pockets and the newest way in telling fortunes, and you exchanged your secrets of all your curses and you all laughed."
Sounds exactly like all my DS Fest trips. ...
I kid!!!!!

Quentin to Carl:  "Remember, I can do it with one hand while the gun is in the other."
 ;D

Since Magda has already informed Quentin that the relic she stole will remove his curse at the next full moon, and she claimed to be willing to perform the ceremony for no other reason than that Jenny loved him, why does he still consider Barnabas to be his "only hope"?  What could Quentin expect to get out of sacrificing his brother to save Barnabas?  Once he's free of the curse, wouldn't he just leave with Beth?

I don't like Angelique's hairdo.  For one thing, she needs to lose the bun.  Her style was much prettier when she first showed up in 1897.

Once again the quick working stone mason of Collinsport has worked his magic.

LOL  It seems he put all his energies into the stone's face, not bothering to finish its edges at all.  But considering Rachel's mostly miserable life, the bird in flight was a nice touch.

We pick up with a new scene in which we find out that Barn is moving his digs back to the mausoleum...

Hmm, I believe you skipped an ep, P.  (See the previous ep for the better of the two scenes, IMO.)  Barnabas really should listen to Magda when she has one of her bad feelings, yes?

Quote
The more Angie keeps trying to warn Barn of what will go wrong, the more I think we’re dealing with both of them being time travelers.  He is bumbling around trying to piece it together and fix things, but she seems to KNOW exactly what will go wrong and keeps trying to give him warnings – which, being Barnabas, he promptly discounts/ignores.
I really like this scene between them.  You can really see Angie’s pov – and why she’s so upset, even hurt.  Apparently she’s been trying to be helpful, but every time it gets thrown in her face.  He’s not even willing to TRY and trust her, not once – even the times when he has nothing to lose by doing so.  So, she's hit the point of the heck with him, I give up, make a mess without my help  then try and get OUT of it without my help.

My take is that Ang was making up stories about his time running out to get him to return to the present with her-- because it was what SHE wanted.  But the timing of her appearance here could not have been worse.  Since he seems to blame the curse for Rachel's death-- a curse the witch carefully worded to include the death of everyone who loved him-- she has a lot of nerve showing up while he's mourning at her grave, so I think it makes sense that he'd rebuff her.  Sorry, I just don't feel the least bit bad for her.

Quote
Once the pieces slip together, Quentin sobers up real quick, and his brain kicks into action.

I love that as soon as his expression changed, we get a big Bum to start the music.

Quote
OK something just hit me.  If he knows enough of the basic Vampire lore that he repeats in this scene, HOW did he NOT recognize the bite marks on Beth’s neck?

Because no one suspected a vampire then?

Quote
(And she’s got an excellent point – a lot of Barn’s troubles come from ignoring her and he’s only escaped unscathed cause she saved him).

In 1796,
Angelique made a deal with Barnabas that if he remained in that time with her (she was stuck there; he wasn't), she would save Vicki from hanging.  He agreed.  And the result was that Vicki was not only hanged but very nearly buried alive.
Angie's first reappearance in this world after that unfortunate incident was in this time (her timeline goes 1796 ---> 1897).  So if I were Barnabas, I'd want nothing more than the privilege of ignoring her too.

Quote
And he finds the latch (If I remember he’s the only one discovered on his own how to do that).

Oh yes, Carl stumbled on the latch while in a panic, something that David no-lock-can-stop-him Collins could not manage despite spending a full night plus several more hours in the secret room, sometimes even resting his head on the freakin' step.

And I hope you know that you can use the milestone smiley anytime you wish.  :)
