The Paley Center for Media is holding a "TV Vampire (S)Takedown" – a vote for "Who is the Greatest TV Vampire of Them All?" The 16 candidates, including "Barnabas Collins", are listed with their TV show, airdates, brief and character description.

The poll is in response to the popular "explosion in the popularity of vampires.... Suddenly, it seems, audiences want blood."

Barnabas is described as follows:
"Barnabas Collins
(1966 to 1971)
Dark Shadows' resident vamp was in the classic style, and actor Jonathan Frid's lovelorn performance made the gothic soap a cultural phenomenon. Barnabas was simultaneously romantic and cruel, a potent combination that had female viewers swooning over their bon bons during his late sixties run."

Is Magda totally incapable of holding onto a gun? [hall2_rolleyes]  But what foresight on Angelique's part to wear the Jewel of Antiquity when she came to Collinwood!

Anyway, I didn't enjoy the ep like Lydia did because I found its sloppiness distracting.  We had actors unaware that the camera had begun shooting (Lacy; Lara and Thayer) and too many lines that got screwed up:

Trask:  "I intend to deal with you right after I attend to him."
Magda:  "What are you gonna do to him?"
Trask:  "To him or to you?"
Magda:  "Both."

Quentin (in the basement at Collinwood):  "Why'd you bring me down here? Why didn't you just take me straight to the police?"
Trask:  "I may not have time before the moon rises to get you into Collinwood."

Angelique to Magda:  "They have him. Trask has him."

Angelique ... put a spell on Trask to write a "confession" that he was the werewolf.
Since Gregory was seen by others, including a local cop, on nights when there were also werewolf sightings, how could this plan possibly have worked?

I remember from 1969 the scene in which Trask tells Quentin to turn around and then knocks him out.
I get that these actors weren't professional stuntmen, but the gun was nowhere near Quentin's head when Gregory struck.

And since when does Petofi let himself into Collinwood?

Gothick, could the mansion have been an Irish castle?  And the vampire uncle only fed on the British, so he was rewarded by the locals (good Patriot that he was) by having access to their cattle?

If so, does this look or sound familiar?-- http://www.librarything.com/work/2229488  (Though the girl's name wasn't Jane; one of the reviewers seems to be confusing her with that better-known governess.)  The earliest publication date I'm finding for it is 1970.

When did we ever see Quentin promise to marry Beth?  I guess Beth was just assuming he would, but surely she knew him well enough to know that she couldn't assume it.  Maybe she was exaggerating in order to impress Angelique.

From #745--
Beth demands Quentin give her the gun.  Are you  that fond of Jenny? asks Q.  Think, Beth begs.  I am, he says, of YOU, he's doing it for you, I swear that--I love you.  She's your wife, objects Beth.  Exactly, says Quentin.  She again asks for the gun.  He insists she return to Collinwood and forget she ever came there.  If I leave now, says Beth, I'll be an accomplice to Jenny's murder.  Quentin promises her she will forget that.  (?)  . . .when we are married, he adds--he hadn't mentioned marriage before.

The voiceover refers to Charity as "a possessed victim."  I wish I'd remembered that during a debate (another DS site and a lifetime ago) about whether she was experiencing an actual possession or not.

Magda seemed quite shocked by the news that a full moon was imminent.  You'd think she would keep better tabs on something so important.

We see both gramophone horns-- the black one shows up in Charity's room, and the flowery red horn is currently in Quentin's room.

Magda and Quentin assure each other that Petofi skipped Quentin while punishing everyone else in the family because he sympathizes with his cursed nature, and that Quentin is the only family member that Petofi doesn't hate for the same reason.  But this contradicts what came out of the big man's mouth.  In #801/2, Petofi said that Quentin would be spared from any truth spells because he is the only person in the house who admits the truth about himself.  There was also something about Petofi only helping him for a price.  But shouldn't M & Q have been talking about "empathy" rather than sympathy anyway?

There was an odd transition during Tessie's haunting of Quentin.  She tells him that she will be with him that night, and we immediately cut to Quentin in closeup with his back to her as he begs for mercy with his face in his hands.  I wonder if there wasn't supposed to be more of Tessie, especially since we got only a very brief glimpse of her grotesque makeup.

I agree with other posters that Pansy's spirit behaves differently from what we saw of her in life, but I think her violent streak in situations involving the Q man was explained during a recent voiceover:  "...for Charity Trask, mad and jealous, has tricked Beth into drinking a glass of brandy that contained poison."  Pansy's loss of Carl and her obsession with Quentin have irrevocably changed her.

That must have been a much more innocent time.  Frankly, if someone today suggested a scene in which a highstrung minister broke in on a couple in a room in which one party was chained to a post, the raison d'etre might be an entirely different one from what we get here.
ROFL

What a marvelous Friday cliffhanger!

Fox posts eps on their website 8 days after they air.  But in the meantime, I found this:  Part 1 (of 5) on YouTube with the entire opening segment (the scenes jimbo mentioned) taking place at Greystone.  But if you feel a little disoriented looking at the house, it's not you-- this upload is backwards.  [hall2_rolleyes]

Thanks for the heads up!

I imagine that in the beginning the idea of the writers was to emphasize that he was only a gypsy king, but right now the name is sticking out like a sore thumb.

His name doesn't bother me since the gypsy musical I mentioned a while back had King Johnny Dembo as its lead character... and Chita Rivera as "Anyanka," who was the daughter of another gypsy king and was to marry Johnny's son.  Surely that can't be a coincidence, right?  (Donna McKechnie's future hubby Michael Bennett danced in the chorus when it was on Broadway, btw.)  As for the title, aren't they only kings of their own tribe?

David/Jamison:  "I'm not who I thought I was. I'm - I'm someone else, someone far away."
Angelique:  "Yes, yes, you're someone else, far away. You must let that someone reenter your body."
Well, it's no wonder that these mind switches and possessions are hard to follow!  I'm assuming she is speaking to David's spirit, who is in the midst of an identity crisis (not surprising when your new moniker is "someone else"), and she's commanding him to return to his as-yet-unborn body (!!).  What a mess.

Anyway, screaming at him didn't end the spell, so Angelique turned to her Master for help.  And he obliged by restoring Edward too, but apparently he wasn't asked to help Charity.  But maybe the Master of Darkness would prefer her the way she is now anyway.  Though it's my guess that Charity, who tasted liquor and found her inner slut while in Barnabas' thrall and crushed on Quentin, would keep Pansy Faye if given the choice.

We learned that Jamison was himself again because he recognized Angelique (as opposed to Cassandra), and Louis Edmond's body language told us the same thing before the character said a word.  And that is the difference between a good actor and a great actor.

Everybody wants Quentin, Satan included. [nodassent]

Jamison asks Quentin why he is trying to kill David.
And IIRC, Angelique showed no reaction.  I wonder how much she knows at this point about Quentin's haunting.  Didn't Cassandra pop in once while his ghost was active?

Quote
It makes one wonder how all these supernatural events have changed Jamison and what effect they have on him.
Excellent point.  Once Quentin's fate gets altered, Jamison's memories of David's victimization by Quentin's ghost probably should disappear.  Yeah, right.

at first, Jamison only had some weird images that didn't make any sense. But later, Jamison asked Quentin why he wanted to kill David, so part of David was still there.
I think David is gone.  And that was another bit of memory from the possession.

Edward apparently forgot what occurred in #803 before he received his own kiss of truth-- Quentin informing him that Jamison had been possessed by the dangerous Count Petofi, aka Victor FG, that his son's odd behavior necessitated a visit by the doctor, and lastly, that the boy's hand was detachable.

Then Dan found out she had secretly married!  She was promptly released from the show.

Other than her 1967 marriage that was all over the society pages?
