so what is happening now is that things are being restored to the way they were in the first place.

Fascinating!

IIRC, the gramophone can be spotted in the drawing room, and since it was not walled up with Gregory, the kids would not have found it inside the sealed room.  Based on that alteration to the future, I think we can assume that the skeleton wasn't wearing Quentin's clothes either when they found it.

There was a gravestone for Carolyn Collins Stoddard in the cemetery.  I'm trying to remember when that would have been used, but coming up blank.

It was behind door #4 during her version of the dream curse.  [hall2_wink]

What a great discussion topic!  Curses for everyone!!

Where else but on DS would you get a line like, "He has gotten through the day of his death and is still alive"?

I was thoroughly enjoying the scenario that individuals in 1897 could eavesdrop as Julia experienced a few moments in 1969, and because she was caught in time, a tweak to the past allowed us to witness the moment in which the ghosts disappeared in the future.  But then Barnabas had to ruin my fun by declaring, "David was never possessed."  Way to open a can of time-travel worms!  <sigh>

Quentin to Barnabas & Julia:  "Who would die in my room, and why would the room be sealed?"
Do you suppose the writers had already settled on a candidate at this point?

As soon as I saw Quentin drinking brandy from a plastic martini glass, I knew we were in store for a crushing.  And what a pathetic crushing it was!

Quentin must have been Chris's great-grandfather

I'm so glad they got around to dropping the extra "great"!

We learn that the person who alerted Petofi of Quentin's impending death was Charity, but I would have much preferred hearing that it was Magda, if for no other reason than that she was assigned to keep Quentin safe on the 10th yet she's neither seen nor spoken about that entire day.

This time, when Beth's hands canoodle with the poison bottle, they were sans nail polish.

Quentin (ecstatically, as the clock strikes 12):  "Oh-h-h-h-h, Midnite."
 [hall2_grin]

Quentin wasn't very smart when he opened his door to talk to Jamison, and then he left his room! [6184]

Leaving his room was foolish, and just being at Collinwood was stupid, but I think I understand why he invited Jamison in.  Once the kid knew he was there (Quentin responded to his knocking because he thought it was a persistent Petofi), ignoring him would have only angered him-- a very bad move.  But since his rejection was already expected, Quentin instead invited Jamison inside to both reassure him of his feelings for him and remind him of their swell times together while promising many more to come.  That's exactly what I would have done under the circumstances!

I can't believe Jamison would get as upset as he did about Quentin casting aside Beth, but maybe I'm being unreasonable.  My thought is that I don't remember Jamison ever showing any particular affection for Beth, but in Dark Shadows that's irrelevant; the David Henesy has more than once turned out unexpectedly to be great pals with a grown-up.  And the fact that I don't like Beth should not blind me to the possibility that others might be very fond of her.

Do the children not have a governess at this point, and has Beth taken up some of those duties?  Anyway, I mentioned in an earlier topic why I found the affection between Jamison and Beth believable, so all I'll add about it is that I find it far more believable than his supposed friendship with Petofi, but after hearing Jamison's speech before turning his back on his BFF Quentin, I'm not sure that any of it is relevant anyway.  Jamison said, "All I understand is that you've hurt someone-- someone you love, Quentin. That's something I never believed that you could do. I don't want to see you anymore, and I don't want to talk to you or have anything to do with you. I hate you, Quentin! I hate you!"  So was it really about his fondness for Beth, or even Beth at all, or just that Quentin behaved in a manner that Jamison found shocking and unacceptable?  I'm wondering now if it was a matter of Quentin falling off his pedestal (as created by Jamison) because of his actions-- because Jamison learned that his uncle was capable of hurting an innocent so badly that they were driven to despair and the brink of suicide.

Wonderful image, MB!

In #834, Barnabas gave some specific instructions to Magda:
if I don't return before midnight on the 10th, you must go to Quentin and tell him he's going to die on that day--he must not see Jamison; he's to leave Collinwood and not come back, and he is not to tell you where he's going--he is not to come back until after the 10th of September--is that clear?  Yes, she says
Well, that deadline has come and gone, and where is Magda?

I'm pretty sure, btw, that only the first door closed behind Julia.

And must Nancy Barrett always scream??!  Gawd!!!

Quentin (about Julia):  "I've never seen anyone like her in my life."
Edward:  "You've traveled more than I have. Have you ever seen anyone like this?"
Quentin:  "Not even remotely."
Call me easily entertained, but I just love those errors of redundancy, and this one amuses me as much as the infamous "Tell them you saw no one here" exchange between Barnabas and Dirk.

Once the letter is carried to the cell in the Old House by Quentin, completing it's travels from 1897 to 1969 and back again, are there now two letters in the same place and time?  I  mean, wouldn't the original still be hidden in the desk?  And if so, doesn't that violate some law of physics?

The rectory set looks to be recycled from Evan's house, which was recycled from Dr. Lang's house, and it will soon be recycled into another doctor's office.

The shot used for the closing credits underscores the puzzling presence of a gaslight in the Old House basement (that alwaysdavid pointed out in the previous WP topic).

The opener picks up where we'd left off-- with Julia listening to Quentin's music from the same spot in the foyer after Amy has fled the house.  She starts to ascend the staircase, and next, she's outside the tower room; did she search the entire house, or was she following the lit candles as Roland suggested?  (Or maybe they were lit by the same phenomenon that ignites the candles in the sealed secret room of the mausoleum?)  Julia is led into the room when its door swings open, but then it slams shut behind her and Beth tells her, "You must go away"; now there's a double message for you.

Since the major circumstances of Beth's death hadn't been changed at this point, she should have been wearing her white dress.  I think her ghost gets yet another dress the next time we see her, but by that point her history has been decidedly changed, so that time it will make more sense that she lost the fancy dress.

IINM, ghostly Beth never mentions the name Angelique.  It's most noticeable when Ghost Beth tells Julia, "I saw the other woman when she returned to the house.  I saw the look of shock on her face..."  It's only in flashback that [Alive] Beth speaks Angelique's name.  I wonder if the writers are establishing that Angelique indeed wasn't the other woman in the original unchanged past.  (I'm with Lydia, btw, in thinking it was Rachel who originally came between Quentin and Beth.  Quentin's ghost did have a thing for her, and had Barnabas remained in his coffin, she may have fallen for Quentin's charms, not to mention stayed alive.)

I get that Quentin is under a great deal of pressure, but ignoring and shouting at Beth and refusing to let her in on what's troubling him-- it's as if we're seeing the old (pre-cursed) Quentin again.  I do buy Jamison's extreme reaction to Beth's anguish, even if she was just a servant.  He already lost Rachel, Judith, and his own mother, and thanks to Quentin nearly lost the only motherly figure he has left in the house.

We've heard Quentin speak before, btw, but only in Jamison's dream.  Beth, too, spoke only in Amy's dream.  But I believe this is the first time we hear both ghosts speak outside of a dream.

Angelique's expression after she informed Beth of her impending nuptials tells us she merely saw it as a a dirty job that somebody had to do.  But her line, "You'll get over it in time, my dear; everyone does" made me want to slap her even more because as we all know, Angelique herself never got over it.

And, seriously, a bottle with a label reading, in big bold letters, "Poison"?!  Sheesh.
[lghy]

I'm sure I wore the same shade of pale pink circa 1969 that Terry Crawford had on her nails, but nail polish in 1897, really?!

The 1897 bulbs are still there in the foyer.
I'm pretty sure the crew has forgotten about those foyer lights.  You'll see what I mean once 1897 is over.

Quote
Quentin crazily goes to the tower.  Why not go for help?
Because he was trying to get away from a crazed woman who was chasing him with a gun and shouting that she will get him?

To me, the blood in the drawing room looked like cutouts set on top of the floor.  (Does anyone remember Colorforms?  [hall2_wink])

*** LECTURE ABOUT DAN CURTIS' HORROR CAREER, BY DR. JEFF THOMPSON

DS/horror/science fiction fan Jeff did his doctoral thesis on Dan's productions in the genre. It was published this year as "The Television Horrors of Dan Curtis." Jeff, an assistant English professor at Columbia University community college in Nashville, will discuss the book and the impact of Dan's TV projects.

Press release: "Curtis, a popular television producer in the 1960s and 1970s, pioneered a new breed of popular horror shows that were motivated by character, continuing story arcs, and a strong awareness of the genre literature of horror fiction. In Curtis' productions, knowing the background story of the various horror characters was essential to understanding the complex and serpentine plots."

The free lecture is Nov. 2 at 12:30 pm at the Ledbetter Auditorium in the Clement building on Columbia State's Columbia Campus. For more information, contact Mike Darrell at (931) 540-2714 or Stuart Lenig at (931) 540-2877 or slenig@columbiastate.edu.

Current Talk '09 II / Re: Discuss - Ep #0835
« on: November 02, 2009, 06:43:26 AM »
It had to be the I Ching that "chose" (is it somehow a conscious being?) to run the events of 1969 and 1897 in parallel according to calendar dates...
Barnabas explained recently (I think in the previous ep) that the I-Ching works by freeing the mind and the will.  So wouldn't it be the user that is making the choices, not the I-Ching itself?

Julia mentioned something to Professor Stokes about Barnabas trying to help Chris as well as David, which surprised me, because Stokes didn't know that Chris was a werewolf, did he?  But Stokes didn't comment on what Julia said.
That was definitely a plot hole.  And I'd venture to say not the only one in the episode...

Edward proclaimed that Barnabas would not be able to get out of his cell, and confirmed Barnabas' statement that he thought of everything.  But in actuality, he hadn't.  Edward previously witnessed Barnabas disappearing in the police station.  Granted, Barnabas is unable to disappear as long as he bears Petofi's mark (and I'm assuming he lost the ability to turn into a bat as well, since he didn't turn into one now or right after receiving the mark), but Edward does not know this-- we witnessed his entire conversation with Petofi and it did not come up.  So Edward, like the Professor in Lydia's above example, behaved as if he had knowledge that he just didn't have.

More oddness--
Edward:  "Even with someone like you, I cannot force myself to kill in cold blood."
I'd have an easier time accepting this had Edward not bravely staked Dirk Wilkins.  Yes, Dirk was not a Collins, but considering that Edward preferred to return an hour before dawn to watch Barnabas die slowly rather than shoot him in the heart so that he could die quickly, I'm just not seeing the advantage to being kin if all it gets you is a more agonizing death.

As for this--
Julia to Stokes (about Amy):  "I don't think she has ever been in any jeopardy."
Okay, that's just stupid, but I'm chalking it up to Julia's desperation to save her man!!

Major Milestones: ...
2. This episode took place in both 1897 and 1969.
It was cool, but was it a milestone?
